What? Havin' a baby?

Yeah, that is absolutely the biggest mistake anyone could make.

Anyway, I'm not sure what their "real" jobs were before making Homestar, but I'd totally quit a "real" job to make a pointless flash toon on the internet starring dumb animal characters if it was makin' money!

If they couldn't afford to take this break, then they wouldn't take it. I don't know how a free Internet cartoon could enable someone to take so much time off, and frankly it's not our place to speculate how, but if they have the means, then good for them.

Well, I'm guessing they made excellent money when say... 20,000 people bought a t-shirt or two. But I'm thinking when they teamed up with TellTale they got a big slice of the monetary pie. I think they probably spend all they've made over the years relatively modestly... enough to live comfortably off just the website. So I'm guessing after a decade of it, they have a small fortune.

Let's look at it from their perspective. They have families now. Lots of babies have been had over the years. They've been, every week pretty much, animating Homestar Runner for the past 10 years. At some point, I bet you'd get tired of it.

I think they took a baby break. Intending to come back. But they were enjoying the heck out of not doing ANYTHING. They probably highlighted the store to try to keep revenue coming in while they were on break. They eventually saw that it upset the fans and removed that. They attempted to come back for like a week, but lost interest.

I'm sure they are having fun with their families. Just enjoying life. Not worrying about making any cartoons or doing Strong Bad voices... just chillax'n.

They probably made no announcement, because they never do. And maybe they don't have a plan for when this will end or maybe they aren't sure if they want to call it quits on H*R.

This is one theory. But suffice it to say, I still think it would be nice if they at least acknowledged the abandonment of the site for seven months. It's just absurd to not put a message up of some kind. Even if it was just "ON HIATUS! (it's not over!)" on the button on the main page.

... I just can't understand it. I don't like the lack of communication. I find it bizarre. It has made me lose some respect for TBC. I know they don't owe us anything, but as mentioned before in this thread, it is a bit rude to fans... and of poor taste. There are thousands and thousands of fans of H*R out there who do not visit the Wiki or this forum. People who have been buying their merch for years. Maybe they don't owe us anything, but if it were ME. I'd at least, out of respect to THOSE people... have the courtesy to put up a message of some kind.

I think Matt worked at Earthlink for customer support.

I hate to say this, but the longer the wait, the higher the bar is set for their return. At this point, it's gonna be hard to come back with, "Yeah, so we added new links to the website!" It's almost gonna have to be, "Yeah, we made a feature length movie" before anyone will take such a break seriously. I just wish I could take almost a year off from my job and put up a puny update like "Xeriouxly" and a new page and say, "Yep, sure accomplished something!" I know they had a birth in the family... all I can say is, "It must be nice to take such a long break." I know it's free, they don't owe anything... blah blah blah. I agree with what many fans have said: Why total silence??? If it was a weekly blog for 2 years, I would understand an unannounced hiatus. We are talking about a 10 year website with merch and a dedicated fanbaste AND a wiki AND a discussion forum just for the wiki!!! They DO owe us more, and if they are setting up a surprise, they'd better hope it's a good one, or they're gonna get a lot of backlash once they reveal it.

And I can tell why I think many fans do not consider "Xeriouxly Forxe" as an update: It seemed like such an afterthought after an almost 6 month wait. Yes, it was something, but it felt like more of a tease than a real "return"... plus, none of the characters we have come to love appeared in their original roles except Homestar and Homsar, and neither one had speaking roles. As Strong Bad once told The Cheat: "It's like you don't even care!"

"Owe" is just too strong a word. It means you have an obligation to do something. No matter how hard you try to parse it, they owe absolutely nothing to their fans. The fact that we have a wiki is really irrelevant: we don't do that as a service to them; we do it for fun.

On the other hand, they definitely should communicate more. This is indeed getting silly, how long this break is leaving us hanging. I somewhat agree with the complaints about Xeriouxly Forxe, too: I thought it was a nice update, but it was kind of a drop of water in an ocean of not water (now that's deep!) And they're risking alienating their fanbase and with it, their source of income. (Then again, it's quite possible the reason for the break is that they have an new source of income.)

In short, I still disagree with the idea that they owe us anything, but they really should communicate more. I think the distinction between "owe" and "should" needs to be made here.

I agree that "owe" is a strong word. I guess I mean to say is that the fans deserve more than what appears to be just a plain drifting away. When a baseball player hits a home run and fans cheer, he can run around the bases and all that. When he breaks a record, he can do the same. But if he just broke a major record and does nothing to acknowledge the dedicated fans that watched in admiration throughout the time, it is his right: but he's gonna have less of a fanbase the next day, because it's rude to ignore them. Did they break the record? No, but if he don't care about the thoughts of his fans, why should the fans care about him any more?

I mentioned the wiki to show the level of dedication of fans. We're not dealing with Salad Fingers here, who has a dedicated fan base I'm sure. I just mentioned the wiki to show the level of devotion of the fans. My mention of the wiki was to show the depth of the fandom generated by the fansite. Animaniacs has a wiki too, but it's not nearly as well maintained as this site, and Animaniacs was a studio released for-profit show that stayed on the air for somewhere around 5 -7 years. I know the site is basically not-for-profit.

What I mean to say is that for an artistic group to appear to ignore such a dedicated fanbase is a disservice to said fanbase. I went from really loving the site to almost loathing it, simply because going there reminds me of this ugly mess. I understand it's their rights to leave and never come back and never explain why. But let me relate it in terms of the Dixie Chicks. The Dixie Chicks were upset because people were burning their albums in response to some anti-Bush remarks they had made. They said they had the right to free speech. They do. The fans also had the right to express their free speech in burning their albums.

In short, TBC have the right to hang up Homestar's spinner beanie and Strong Bad's boxing gloves without explanation and never come back. But the fans also have a right to be upset about the situation.

Just saying.

It's almost the end of June & the site still hasn't been updated, I'm starting to lose hope.

To me, it sort of seems that all TBC ever thought of Homestar Runner was that it was a silly little series of Internet cartoons, and never really could've predicted, or probably don't even realize today, how big it actually got. They'd probably rather focus on bigger, possibly more lucrative projects rather than their silly little Flash cartoons, and I don't blame them one bit.

I disagree with people who send them letter after letter, email after email, bugging them to come back. I mean, they have things in their lives that are more important than their silly little web cartoon show, and badgering them is just gonna frustrate them and annoy them.

What I mean is that I understand it if they don't want to continue Homestar Runner, and I disagree with bothering them about it. If they don't want to do it, that's fine and I don't think that millions of whiny emails will change anything except maybe annoy them. Not that I'm accusing any person or persons of sending millions of emails, but I can imagine they must at least have quite a few.

I also disagree with the whole "Oh, well, they've taken long enough of a baby break" attitude. I mean, OK, I want them to come back just as badly as anyone does, but it's not up to us to tell them what to do, and when they've had long enough of a break. They'll come back when they're good and ready.

With all that said, I do still want Homestar Runner to continue, and I wish it could continue forever, since I'm sure there's plenty more stuff the gang of Free Country, USA can do. If they're not going to continue it, I'd also appreciate at least a send off or one final cartoon of some kind.

Uh...guys...

Isn't Mike working on something made by the Jim Henson company?

I don't have all the facts on it but I remember reading about it a couple of months ago...

Maybe that's what's occupying his time, and he is the animator after all.

I think they've always wanted to make films. And more specifically, children's films. They made up a children's book, after all. Homestar Runner was sparked by that desire and while it has probably been great for them, they are now on a level where they could make actual animated feature films. Stuff like Pixar does and what not. And what kind of creative artistic person wouldn't stop working on flash cartoons to do that?

Sorry, Panther, if you read my post. I was just kidding. Anyways, I agree with everyone here that owe is a strong word and that communication is very important blah blah blah. Is it really too much trouble to say, "We're not dead! Still on hiatus!" and put it on the site? Come on! I have never seen someone completely alienate a fanbase like that. Either they are working on bsomething big, they are to lazy, or the site is... DEAD

You kidding me? They "owe" us something?

Lemme get this straight, they've provided years of entertainment to you, for free. They've written free games and free toons once a week for a decade. And they owe you something? If anything, *you* owe *them*.

The Chapman Brothers don't owe us anything. If they're done with the site, which it appears that they are, then that's their choice. It isn't "rude" to the fans. When Seinfeld stopped making new episodes it wasn't rude of Jerry Seinfeld. When Friends was over, it wasn't rude. It's an entertainment.

And to the people who say, "Well, we're the ones who bought their merch and video games! We gave them their money", I say, "Sure, you did." But no one held a gun to your head; you bought the stuff because you wanted it. It doesn't create some quid pro quo arrangement where you buy a 20 dollar t-shirt and the Chapman Brothers provide you with free entertainment for life.

Come on folks, I'm as disappointed as anyone about no new updates. But I'm not going to couch it in terms of "they owe us as fans."

And as to them owing us communication as fans, I ask "what for"? This started as something they did for kicks in their free time. It grew in popularity until it was something they made money doing. Obviously, now they're making money doing something else. That's all you really need to know. They were doing it and now, they aren't. They don't need to divulge (nor should they) every jot and tittle of their personal lives. They don't owe anyone an explanation. Maybe somebody's sick. Maybe somebody's dying. Maybe they just don't want to make their private lives public to the internet legions.

Have you folks read some of the comments on here? Stuff like, "Pft, they've had enough time with that baby." "I wish I could just stop working and be lazy." Are you serious? Maybe, just maybe, their kids and families are more important to them than some internet person that they've never met's esteem and respect. They're somehow delinquent because they aren't providing you with tons of free entertainment? The sense of entitlement is just...mind-boggling.

"I hate the site now, because of this." Wow, that's amazingly childish. You enjoyed the site and found it humorous and entertaining and now that the updates aren't forthcoming the entertainment value is lost? Isn't Homestar and the crew still as comical as always? I mean, wow, are your tastes that fickle?

Enjoy the cartoons that are still up. Check for updates as often as you want to. And if you're that upset and angry that they haven't kept you in the loop on their personal lives....well, maybe you should find something else to devote your attention to.

Yes, the Great Hiatus is grown on me. The first time I came to this site was DURING this Great Hiatus, even after main page 26. Yeah, Im new...

Anyways I looked up on Wikipedia that the Brothers Chaps had a baby, so they stopping for a while. But a baby takes a long time to grow. Im getting really scared: help?

My prediction was today, but its passed, so my new prediction is, sadly, November 1. I think they will start on the first day of a month, but has to be on Monday. November 1. Think about that. :sb: just went into e-tirment again. Not good at all.

We might need to face the facts, it'll be a long time. I think we should create an article on the wiki called The Great Hiatus. Its probably gonna be 13 months before the next Sbemail, but there should be toons way before that. Final prediction: Toon start the first monday of August, next Sbemail November 1. Ugh I hate hiatus.

I actually like the idea of making a wiki page on "The Great Hiatus", even if it is the end, the name would still be acceptable. And if not, well then we can edit in when the hiatus ends. And it would still be the longest time they've taken off of H*R

I agree with the buying more merch.

I shall buy a whole lot of stuff from the store (hopefully) at the end of august and it will be over 100$!! (ive checked) theres already a DVD sale, so they must need money for something...

Buying more merch is always good but we should'nt do it just beacause we think that TBC might be having money problems, we should buy stuff beacause the merch is awesome! (And it is.)

I'm not saying we should'nt buy more stuff (beacause we should) I'm just saying we don't even know if they're having money trouble, they've had plenty of sales before haven't they?

I would definately laugh if their update was updating Strong Sad's Lament.
Actually I think it'd be funny if they updated that with Strong Sad saying that not much has been going on around Free Country, USA lately.

I have to say, the Homestar Wiki is probably one of the finest fan wikis I have seen.

Or maybe it just doesn't have ads.

I actually like the idea of making a wiki page on "The Great Hiatus", even if it is the end, the name would still be acceptable. And if not, well then we can edit in when the hiatus ends.

Doesn't April's "Seriously Forxe" count as an update?

True, but it really does seem like it has been just one big Hiatus, since they made that toon and the main page and then stopped again. The ending of a Hiatus would mean at least a prolonged return to the series, while they had only made a toon and a main page. So I could see how the time between the Halloween Toon and now could count.

Like I said before, let's just wait it out. And besides, it's not like there's anything else that we could do that would have a greater effect on the situation.

Pure awesome and truth, a most beautiful post.

Yes, yes, and yes. I agree with everything you posted. They've brought me and countless others much happiness over the years, I can't begin to thank them enough. They owe us nothing, and I fully understand if they decide to leave. I'm just so glad for what they've done for us over all these years.

It's been stated that TBC doesn't owe the fans anything.

I beg to differ.

They're running a business and the fans who buy merch are their customers. If they're shutting down their business, I think they do owe it to the people who have paid their hard earned money to buy harmless junk at the H*R store to at least say what's going on if they're going to be gone for a year. Duh. Just disappearing like this is unprofessional.
