There are numerous download links on HRwiki for Quotes of the Week, songs etc. Some of these are linked directly to files on the official H*R.com site and are therefore legal to download, of course. But some are files uploaded to the HRwiki site, which is not an official affiliate of the H*R site. If these files have been uploaded without the permission of the owners of the H*R site, which seems very likely, it is an illegal act to upload them and in many countries it is illegal to download files that are uploaded illegally.

So, I am asking if it is really legal to download the files uploaded to the HRwiki site. :)

I think they're mostly things that used to be available on homestarrunner.com, but aren't anymore, and can't be found anywhere else.

Sad, because it still means they are uploaded without permission.

Regardless of how legal it is or not, I don't think The Brothers Chaps mind.

If the hammer hasn't battered down your door, you're O.K.

Also, Einoo, quit being a friggin Jerk to everyone.

I agree with Cola, Einoo. You've been unnecessarily hostile to other users lately. Please take a chill pill or something.

As for the legality of those files, TBC are aware of the Wiki, and even use it to help them keep track of their work. I'm sure that if they minded us hosting their files here as a mirror, they'd have given us a Cease and Desist a long time ago.

COLA, you are right, but seriously. Pot calling the kettle black, dude.

I agree with Didy, though. I'll take a [s]big old headache medicine[/s] chill pill.

Hi Joox, and thanks for your concerns.

The HRWiki has a great relationship with the Chapman brothers. They have thanked the wiki many times for being a respository of information that even they use on a regular basis (they enjoy the fact that fans document every corner of their website so that they don't have to remember it all themselves). The admin team has a line of communication open to the creators, which is used on occasion to speak to the Chapmans' sister Karen, in charge of the Homestar Runner Store.

It is understood that if the Chapmans have a problem with how the wiki documents their enterprise -- which has not happened before -- they can let us know and we will respect their wishes. It is important to remember that the Brothers Chaps run a family- & friend-owned company that makes its money off of sales from the Homestar Runner Store. Their website content is free of charge (not even advertisements are run on their site). Indeed, Homestar Runner got where it is now solely through word of mouth. To the Brothers Chaps, it makes no sense to throw the legal book at their fans for custody of their free content, which they have made available for download in the past, because when that content gets shared, it gets more people acquainted with Homestar Runner.

So is it legal? Yes, because the Brothers Chaps define their own rules contrary to the system's.

Thanks everyone! I see the point now. I just wasn't aware of the close relationship of the wiki and the official site. I think the files are perfectly OK, then.

Close is probably an understatement. Matt and Missy have both made donations. Talk about an appreciation for their fans.. :-)
