hey I am thinking that musically-inclined fans should all get together and make covers of Homestar Runner songs and put them together into a "Homestar Runner Fan Tribute Album"

Just get with your band or crew or just yourself or whatever and record a song that's from Homestar Runner, upload it to the internet and post a link. be kinda like sloshy and limozeen! and the very low sodium band too LOL!!

I think on this tribute album we should try to use sounds that are directly from H*R as little as possible so we can be really creative. Try to make the song in a totally different style from how it was originally. Some of the tracks could be covers of the "Strong Bad Sings and Other Type Hits" but they don't have to be. Since H*R music goes over all kinds of styles but is (I must admit) generally of a very low quality, it seems like excellent material for aspiring (meaning "noob") musicians to "cut their teeth" (meaning "get started") on.

anybody interested?

Neither--the whole point is that you make your own version.

I was just wondering which version I should base it off of. I'm also thinking about doing a metal version...

That sounds fun, but I can't sing. I can play the recorder really well though. The recorder is a legitimate instrument that you can play very complicated music on.

I'd love to, but I can't.

Wait, why not? Sure I can!

Reminds me though I need to revive that music makey thread Putin made.

The very fact that you feel the need to qualify it as a legitimate instrument before anyone says anything to the contrary casts some doubt as to whether it is, in fact, legit.

No it doesn't. People just think the recorder is a little kid's instrument because it's often used as a instrument to introduce little kids to playing music. It's just that the basics are pretty easy to pick up.

I felt the need to say that because I once had a band leader who asked me if I could play a chromatic scale on the recorder, and a teacher who seemed really surprised I could play something more complex than Hot Crossed Buns on it.

Of course it can play a chromatic scale! The only real limitation is the lack of volume control. Blow too hard or softly, and it just goes out of tune.

I might maybe do a cover of a H*R song.
Didymus, you should totally do something, yay!

i'm workin on a "We Will Rock You" / "We Are the Titans" style cover of "We Don't Really Even Care About You"

i'm also doing a cover of "Secret Song" which turns it into something ... actually musical.

and about "Because It's Midnite" - feel free to base it off either one. We could even, if two different people were to submit two really good but different versions of that song - put two versions on the album. Still, the guy is right when he says the whole point is to make your own version.

and while saying "this is a legit instrument" does imply that there are *people* out there who think it isn't, I don't think that implies that it isn't. There are people who say a turntable isn't a legitimate instrument or form of musical expression but it still is. 4get them lol

I might try something. If someone else does something and I want to too, can we have two different versions of the same song?

All I have to offer as a counterargument to that is but one word:

Keybong.

Ok, I have my version of "Because, It's Midnite" ready. Now I just need to get some help from some of my musically inclined friends (for drums and bass and the like) and find a way to record it lol.

Grind version of Trogdor coming soon.

In the mean time, I give you this. Forgive the off time and terrible vocals, it's my brother, in 5 minutes. The talking is me.

I think the musical styles should reflect the musical diversity found in the H*R universe. There's everything from old-school hip hop and metal to soft love songs and country. I don't want to limit it.

Also, I'm not into grindcore (ducks as tomatoes are thrown)

The version of "trogdor" psted on imeem is funny of course but um I strongly suggest that you don't directly copy stuff but instead make up your own style. Add extra verses maybe - change the tune or use totally different instruments.

course, if you come up wtih a totally original "remake" that sounds very much the same but doesn't use any actual sound from The Brothers Chaps at all ... that's cool too I guess

FOR FUTURE REFERENCE, please DO NOT post on imeem unless you can download from imeem because you can't download from there. There are plenty of places that do let you download, like for example eSnips.com

Meh, just trying it out. I AM doing the grind version (I don't like grind actually, I think its funny how people think its music), so thats...different... than the original. And I don't want people to download this, so I wouldn't worry about where I put it.

EDIT:

I now present to you Trogdor - grind/deathcore version. I believe we're doing Somebody Told Me next.

i can't listen to it here - have to wait till I'm not at work.

but I already know that's totally useless to this project unless you upload it somewhere where people can freely download it. imeem doesn't let people do that. Please use eSnips or fileden or zshare or something where people can freely download.

Lol, I love how seriously your taking this. Stop making such a big deal out of it. Its not like we're going anywhere with this, so stop acting like we are.

Um, I'm wanting to seriously get somewhere with this. i mean, i've gotten projects done before and there's plenty of real homestar fan music that's already been made. Other fan communities like OverClocked Remix for example make really good quality fan music - they actually release albums and stuff, so why can't we?

Because taking things seriously on this forum is a capital offense, apparently.

Bro, you're trying to say you've "gotten things done" by linking to a Wiki you made... all about you?

Solid, man, solid.

If I had the capability to record good quality music, I'd put effort into it. But honestly, it takes a lot more skill to record covers than to "mash up" other people's already recorded songs. I can guarantee you that making all new versions would be WAY more complex than a lot of people here could handle. Not to mention that the fan music you've cited is done by real musicians, not average forum users.

hey i'm not saying it has to be good. it just has to be real, meaning you can really download it

and yes I know writing and producing your own music is harder than doing mashups.

The only thing that an average computer user can't do at a reasonably good quality these days using only their PC is record vocals. All the instruments and so forth can be synthesized and most people couldn't tell the difference. i'm not looking for commercial quality, I'm looking to have some fun putting music together with people :)

(later edit: it is true that certain instruments, like acoustic guitars, suck when they're synthesized. but it doesn't matter if the music sucks because the point is to learn. and just as writers learn how to write by writing lots of terrible prose, I figure that musicians must learn how to produce songs by producing lots of terrible songs.)

if you don't want to help then just get lost. it doesn't help to be negative and try to tear down what other people want to do

i think i just need to record a song to show you guys what I'm talking about.
