i've been thinking about this a lot lately. How do we know it is 2010 in the H*R universe? We almost never see newer technology, and it seems as if they are living in the 80s. Also, in the xexirouxly forxe toon, it says "Revamped for the 90s! So much more exciting!" What year do you think it's in?

In years past, the H*Rverse was shown to keep up with our years. Also, common sense The Cheat has an iMac (aka- modern). Such as? They did that because it was hilarious. 2010, as of now.

I agree that it's the same year in Free Country as it is IRL (SBEmail 150 and TrogdorCon '97 come to mind as examples of toons that mention the current year), but to be fair...



Not everyone, but at least Strong Bad and the Videlectrix staff are clearly infatuated with the past. The former plays exclusively 8-bit (and other low-bit) games, uses old computers (until the Compé), and makes loads of references to movies, TV shows, and other bits of pop culture from the 80s (though he does refer to years like 1987 in the past tense). The latter makes exclusively 8-bit (and other low-bit) games (with the exception of their share of SBCG4AP, but have you seen their "real" box art?). Then there's Limozeen, who for all intents and purposes seem to have come straight from that decade.

Look at the date on the newspaper in sbemail22, which was made in 2002.

In "Evironment" Strong Bad said the year was 2008, so it's definitely later than '08.

It is impossible to understand Homestar Runner as anything other than a series of videos (and a kid's book!) produced by TBC over the course of the last fifteen years or so. So much of the humor is about the self-awareness of the thing, the continual shifting and blurring of one "reality" into another. How about: "These mascot costumes in Strong Bad's imagination are way better than the real-life ones!" "Oh, I'm pretty much here every week. It's just that usually I'm behind the black." "Uh... Didn't I invent this cartoon? Then how come I can't understand a lick of it?" If you were digging around for a masters' thesis, you could maybe talk about how we conspire with the creators--TBC--to create a fictive world together, and the big laughs come when they jerk the rug out from under us just a little bit; change the rules in a subtle but clever way, so we have to play catch-up, learn the new "rules," and join in re-imagining that world.

I think that the Proud Anselmo is saying that to try to understand or quantify anything about the Homestar Runner universe is meaningless because their reality is so unstable. As mentioned, the characters can hide behind "the black" (crossing from their world to ours), read each other's thoughts, and whatever else. Obviously, the Homestar Runner universe is a crazy place that defies being pinned down to one particular notion of reality in the way that our universe does. The question "what year is the Homestar Runner universe" becomes meaningless because this assumes Homestar's universe works like ours, where in fact it could be two years at the same time, or anything else for the sake of humor. I think that's what the Proud Anselmo is saying.

However, I'd argue from some of the examples listed in the thread* that Homestar's time generally mirrors real world time, so it wouldn't be absurd to say that Homestar's universe is effectively in the year 2010 right now.

Nope. Old farts like me, born in the 70s. I'm like a whopping three months older than the oldest Brothers Chaps. I remember rushing home after school for the first G.I. Joe cartoon mini-series (the MASS Device!). That makes the whole Cheat Commandos deconstruction of 80's militarism and the 80's cartoon-industrial complex wonderful for me in ways that are hard to describe.

People of my generation brought you ironic deconstruction...but, let me tell you, this crap was being ladled out to us in utter earnestness at the time. Like, people seriously thought the Soviet army was going to invade some high school in Colorado ANY DAY NOW. It's a miracle we aren't even more twisted and dysfunctional.

I agree completely.

Has that changed? Now people seriously think "terrorists" are going to invade Colorado or any other random location, because they can.
