Howdy folks. I'm an LTWFTW. Not to say I'm a lurker, because this is actually my first visit to the HRwiki forums, but I have enjoyed the Wiki for a while. I've considered maybe even contributing, but that's not the point right now.

I've been working on a research paper this semester, and seeing as how I could choose my own topic, I decided I would somehow twist Homestar Runner into being a viable topic. I haven't written the paper yet, but I have had to hand in my "research results" (read: "clicking 'print' a few times while watching the toons and getting occasional info from the Wiki and a few articles") and some written notes periodically. More or less, I think my paper is going to be about how Homestar Runner is at the forefront of a revolutionary new style of cartoon, and how it's just so darn subtley accurate in a quasi-parody of real life. I'm not sure I can turn that into a great paper, but I'll see where it goes.

But anyway, the more immediate point is that I've got to do a casual 15 minute presentation on my semester's research this Tuesday. And I need help. I've probably rambled on and over-explained myself (which I have a tendency to do), but to sum things up, I've got to do this in a room without Internet access. We have a projector system with a computer, DVD player, VHS player, and CD player, but no Internet access. How do you do a presentation on Homestar Runner without Internet access? I could bring in the DVD set to show a few Strong Bad e-mails, but I was actually wanting to show a few things beyond the first 100... I was considering showing "Dragon" since it's such a big landmark and "Army," but other ideas I had were "Radio" and the Cheat Commandos toon "Shopping for Danger," and of course the latter two are not on the DVD.

I was thinking about downloading the .swf files, but I want it to look nice, and since the raw .swf files show the exterior of the toon's borders, that doesn't count as looking nice. So I was considering placing the .swf files into a plain .html file or something like that, where there would be a black background, much like how it is on the Brothers Chaps' site, although it might be cool if I could make it a little bigger. But my skill with HTML is vague and I really don't know what to do. Does this sound like the most practical way to do my presentation? Any suggestions?

Also, any idea on whether my list of toons are the best ones to present? It's highly possible that no one in my audience has ever heard of Homestar, so I need to carefully choose so that they get that it's funny.

EDIT: Actually, I think I may have this figured out. I just need to save the .swf and its respective .html page to the same folder, and it seems I might not have to do any modification at all. I think.

It looks like you solved your viewing-without-an-Internet-connection problem, and I think your approach is best. That is, giving them the same experience a regular viewer would have.

Additionally, Eltima Software's Flash Decompiler might help you out with explaining how the toons are actually created with Macromedia Flash.

It's free to download, and I've found it very handy in the past.

Oh wow, that's a really nifty little tool there. I'm not sure I should use it in my presentation, but I can say that I'll enjoy using it for fun.

Yeah, I've used this program to decompile some Bonus Stage episodes, and see how they draw the characters, or make the music or something. But now back to on-topic. Umm... well, I think it would be a great idea to make that paper! Good luck! ;)
