Post subject:  Subtitles

[edit since this has been bumped up from its grave]
Neither site that this script was once hosted on still exists... don't bother trying to find this, it's not out there any more. Look at the newer wiki subtitling project instead.

I'm one of those weird people who like to watch DVD movies with subtitles on, watch tv with close-captions, etc...
So I've written a way to put subtitles on the H*R movies...

So far I've only done two movies - Superbowl Dealie (since it's one of the shortest) and Cheat Commandos...O's (for no good reason - it's just a short that I like)

Have a look at http://members.lycos.co.uk/phlipping/su ... heatcereal and say what you think.
Subtitle text is at http://members.lycos.co.uk/phlipping/su ... btitle.txt - comments in this one describe what each line means.

I've also done a coloured version - different speakers have different subtitle colours (text) and Superbowl Dealie (text)
Just http://members.lycos.co.uk/phlipping/subtitles/ gives a list.

Unfortunately the subtitles "wrapper" breaks the seek bar... I might make another version later that has a seek bar built in - it would certainly help making the subtitles files.

Before I do any more though, I'm curious:
a) whether anyone would use this at all
b) whether it's even legal (I don't see how it's different to the transcripts in the wiki, but I'm not certain...)
c) whether anyone would help to write them, if I wrote some wiki-oid system for putting them up.

Also, there are things like TGS where every word already appears in the pictures, so there's no point in subtitling it, but in the emails only most of the words spoken are typed... subtitling everything that he types would look stupid subtitling just a little 2-3 word aside would also look weird...

Anyways, I just thought I'd put this out there and see what people thought...

Yeah well I had a better host once but they collapsed... :(
This is the only free host I know of that does PHP stuff... I haven't touched the actual site there for some time though because of the ads... just use it for hosting random stuff...

Just keep refreshing, you should get a relatively ad-free page sometimes...
Usually I just get one with an ugly banner down the right side, but doesn't cover the page too much...

Pretty good subtitles there. Some people might like to use it on the toons that have parts that are harder to understand.

It only works with the Superbowl Dealie with the subtitles.

I can see Cheat Commandos...O's subtitles fine. Well, except for the ads. Can't see anything with those things. Dang!

Hmm... looks like I'll need to do some more debugging with the thing online... I've been doing it all locally, which means there's no downloading times...

It seems to hit the loadMovie() line then stop running... Weird...

Anyways, try right-click->Rewind, right-click->Play, and see what that does for you...

Those subtitles look really good Philip. I don't think that it's goes against any copyright laws either.

I do it because half the times I can't hear what the person is hearing.

OK, I made a small change to subtitles.swf, that should fix any problems with it loading the movie but not showing the subtitles.
It seems it was a problem if the main H*R movie started playing before the subtitles swf finished downloading. Added a preloader, that should clear it up.
Tell me if it still doesn't work though...

Also, it's nice to know I'm not the only one who likes the subtitling, my friends think I'm crazy... not that the two are mutually exclusive :P...

[edit]
OK, I finally saw the cover-my-entire-screen ad, and yes, it is just ugly. There doesn't seem to be any way to get rid of it short of reloading the page, either.
What's worse is it's an ad for Lycos hosting, so they're both advertising their product and showing it's totally crap at the same time... "Get hosting at Lycos and get a full-page hide-all-my-content ad at no extra charge!"
If it was a paid ad by someone else it would make some sense at least (just hoping the ad would cost a lot) but this is just ridiculous.

For the Cheat Mommandos one the subs are too big for the screen. They go off to the side.

I'm having a little trouble with the shopping for danger one. It heeps saying loading and sometimes the ad banner will appear on top of it when I scroll down a little.

It works for me...
It did say "loading" for a while when I tried it just then, but I'm on dialup and it suddenly decided not to cache it today...

Indeedy. I'm open to suggestions...
I'm looking at http://www.websiteallies.com/ - I'll see how it goes (but anything has to be better than tripod...)

Wait, so you think Geocities could be better than Tripod? Try Freewebs, allthough they don't enjoy images unless you sign up for PAY-PLUS.

Author:  Phlip [ Wed Apr 20, 2005 1:53 pm ]
Post subject:

Well geocities doesn't have full-page ads of the scale tripod does, so yes

Then again, they don't offer PHP...

[edit]
Ok, it's up
http://phlip.websiteallies.com/
It's not exactly ad-free, but it's still better than tripod...
Also, Strong Bad is in Jail Cartoon is there... if someone can suggest something a bit more onomatopoeic than "(cheat noises)" I'd be greatful ;)

Well, The Cheat makes a lot of different noises.

"Meh!"

"Mmmheh!"

Geocities is also faster, isn't it? PLUS You can exit out of the adds. Anyway, nice jorb on those subs!

Post subject:

Geocities used to have really annoying ads that were on the left and covered up text, that could be closed but were really annoying and took a while to load the page when you press the close button. Now they are much better, with a type of frame thing, and when you want to close them it just disappears, no loading or anything.

If I may make a suggestion? Can you please subtitle dragon, which is almost a universally liked Strong Bad Email?

Author:  Phlip [ Thu Apr 21, 2005 11:32 am ]
Post subject:

I've subtitled the two toons that (IMO) need it more than the others - kind of cool and Senor Mortgage

Sure, I'll do dragon next, but it'll be the last for a little while...
