I'm not sure if this has been done before but I've tinkered around with programming text adventures for the past year and think it might be cool to do a H*R-themed one. It'd be in Inform as a .z5 if I do decide to go through with it. Any interest?

Oh, boy.

We've had lotsa text adventures in the past.

If it's a program all its own, let's see it!

I know there's an absolute glut of text adventures in the fanstuff wiki section - believe me, I've played through a lot of them myself. I'm talking about an actual program with a parser.

That's what she's proposing, Phlip. Please try reading the posts before you reply to them.

Yes, that's exactly what I'm proposing. Now all I have to do is take a night to think up some kind of decent plot.

I rock at text adventures. I made my own once. that was for an apple II, though. I don't know how to get C++ to work with having more than one character inputs.

Heh. When I was taking beginning C I thought it might be cool to try and make a parser with it. That lasted about an hour until I quit in disgust. Now I just stick to Inform. Graham Nelson's already done that part of it.

Oops, I misread the OP as "has anyone written one" not "I'm going to write one"... And I completely missed where they mentioned Inform...
Yarg to staying up late at night...

[edit]
It's been a while, but this thread has gotten me in the mood for making something...
So here is Thy Dungeonman as a .z5
You'll need a Z interpreter - WindowsFrotz2002 is good, I can't vouch for the ones on other platforms.
It's probably got a few typos and bugs in it yet, so be gentle...

I'm not all that creative though, I'll leave the creation of new text adventures to the experts ;)

I don't get this at all...

I want to create a text adventure...but I don't understand that site at all...?

EDIT: Ohh. I get it. But how do I MAKE a text adventure?

Basically what you need is a compiler (most of them are DOS-based. Do not fear the DOS. DOS is your friend.) and a text editing program. And the DM4 bookmarked perhaps.

I'm still trying at the plot. All I know is that it's going to take place in normal Free Country USA (1936, 20X6, etc. will be there, just as 'Easter Eggs'. This is one of the things that I know exactly how I'm going to do.) And all the characters will be in the game.

As for who you play as? It's either Strong Bad or Strong Sad.

(psst Phlip: You left debug on.)

Crystallina, you may also want to check out TADS.

I've tried TADS before but still prefer Inform. Mainly as a matter of aesthetics.

Got it. The plot:

Sir Strong Bad, before his death, has sent Strong Bad one last telegram, which Homestar diligently delivers to him at his computer. As the story goes, Sir Strong Bad has buried all the riches he has stolen from the downtrodden Depression-era citizens in the Far Far Reaches of Free Country, USA. As his successor, he would like Strong Bad to take possession of such riches. However, it is a dangerous journey, with death or Bad Stuff around every corner.
