what about have it be like... a flash intro to the wiki, then it redirects you to the wiki

or would it be possible to have that as the wiki's adress be that? no redirect...

On current homestarrunner.net:

  • welcome
  • backstage
  • website
  • affiliated
  • pants

They all have easter eggs. And I figured out what the "list" button does.

I think we should put on the domain "Now located at hrwiki.org. It's dot-org!"

Didn't we already conclude that it's gonna be a site with a bunch of links?

I think a lot of people are being redirected here from the wiki front page and are posting without reading the whole thread.

We councluded earlier on this thread that we would not do this. I am still up for the portal, and maybe some miscellaneous easter eggs there, for the nosy people.

Check out this site: Iowa State Entomology Index. Obviously our subject matter will be way different, and chances are the layout and color scheme would be radically different as well, but the organization of the directory could be much the same (though our directory will no doubt be much smaller than this one).

That's actually a really good example. I'm down for something like that.

That's not bad. And how exactly would new sites be added? Wiki format, or 'submit and be approved and added by sysop' format?

The latter sounds good. The admin(s) could keep everything organized and setup a submission form.

well, the thread over there is locked. im starting to have second thoughts about a portal or anything that has to do with any other forum. im thinking we gotta just leave .net the way it is, or sell the domain to someone so we can get a better server.

Assuming by "over there" you mean homestarrules...
Like I said over there, don't be judgemental of their community unless you've spent some time over there, gotten to know them well, let them get to know you...

Sure, first impressions are important but they usually don't tell the whole story. Even knowing this and trying to suggest caution I still managed to misrepresent them just because I hadn't spent enough time there.

Besides, you didn't leave a very good impression there yourself...

Just so you know, Cola is a member of homestarrules. I saw him there once. He made a thread about Religion and Politics. Then he got flamed.

Edit: Oh. It looks like you do know. K.

No, he made a thread asking for a religion and politics board and a whole two people strongly disagreed.

Making overexaggerations is not helping the relations between the two boards.

I fully support the portal idea. I also fully support the flash-thing idea. Yes, I'm desperate to help.

okay, an opinion from an obvious newbie here, but here is what i think. that entomology site is great and all, but there is almost too many links on there. my first inclination is to get out of the site right away because it looks like a load of junk... too many words. don't get me wrong, though. i think using h*r.net as a sort of list... er... did you call it a portal? to other fan sites is a great idea... just with not so much links. i think keeping it simple would be a nice idea. maybe have logos of the fan sites, with little descriptions next to them, and clicking on the logo takes you to the site.

about the flash... FLASH IS AWESOME! DO FLASH! DO FLASH! but really, the linking and all should be set up before you worry about making a flash thing. so maybe when you figger out what is going down with the linkage, and actually get it out there, then think about that flash.

ps... i do flash. i would happily do the flash if nobody else out there was able to or if they all procrastinated too much about it and it wasn't getting done... i am good with what i know, but i only know enough to make animation and sound only, not buttons or anything. i am still learning how to do that other junk. if we could get TBC to do something... WOW that would be awesome... but, that isn't likely. bummer.

I'd just like to remind everybody: Flash: 99% Bad.

Unless people are coming to your site for the specific purpose of seeing your Flash movies, you should not use Flash on your site. Seriously.

I think it should be a full-blown Homestar Runner fansite, with fan-made downloads and stuff, maybe even fan-made Homestar flash cartoons.

And the Wiki needs some easter eggs. Like an invisible button that you click and it takes you to a cool place. I dunno, that'd be pretty cool...

ok, i see your point on flash intro, and immediately visable flash stuff. how about in an easter egg though? i really liked the idea of strong bad saying "i can't believe you actually tried this address"

Yes, that would be nice if we wanted visitors to go blind. :poop:

You know there's a website with the flash files of all aspects of the actual site, right? :p

Personally, I think .net should include more than just the Wiki.

Personally, I feel that bith homestarrules and the wiki should be represented.

Homestarrules is a spawn of .net, and the wki has huge ammounts of info.

You see, if we work together, I feel the .net domain can really be good.

Yes.. yes I am very well aware. It seems that .rules is not fully understood, and I just wanted to make sure we are not left out of the loop.
anyways...

I feel maybe the "portal" could be done in flash, much like the old intro. Here are a few ideas:

1. A homestar main page theme, much like the old intro
2. A tandy/compy/lappy screen intro
3. A futuristic "portal" with wormholes, etc.

(if you need any help with the design, I am advanced in photoshop and website planning skills, and intermediate in Macromedia Flash) [/list]

I think we've already decided to not use flash. Flash is tacky and can be annoying.

*points to IJ's post with a reminder that flash is usually bad*

Homestarrunner is completely made in flash. Why not follow their lead? I haven't seen one bit wrong with their site and I've used flash for all my clients.

Because they're good at it. And flash is the right tool for what they do.

Flash is a good animation tool. It also can be a good game-making tool. When treated very well by someone experienced it can be a good web-application tool. It is not a good web site design tool in general.

Hammers can be used very well on nails. You can also hammer your screws into the plasterboard. Doesn't mean it's what you want to do.

And based on the Flash skills of the people in fanstuff... sure it's fine for fan art but I wouldn't want to navigate a site like that (no offence to the people who made that fanstuff).

The intent of a portal site is not to be fancy - it is simply to deliver users to where they want to go, as quickly and as simply as possible.
