On January 8th the forum will be locking the ability for users to change their usernames at will. The only way for a user to have their name changed is through direct intervention of an administrator.

Please have your username set how you would like it before that date, as we will not be making any changes for users after that date.

Whoa. No more holiday-style, or robot-ninja-pirate-style?

May I ask why?

I think they'll take away the whole ability to do that.

Is the reason for this change the fact that it's easy to impersonate someone? Or something else?

EDIT:Meh. Stupid quote tags.

You can certainly pm a mod, but we won't be making the changes.

It is just confusing. The only way to distinguish one user from another is by either their name, their avatar, their sig, or if you know them personally.

With as many users as we have, it is impossible to keep track of every name change.

That's exactly what I think. Sure, it seems like fun to change names around the holidays, but if I were a new user coming in just now, I'd be very confused, and I can't imagine the novelty of name-changing works as well with those newcomers because of this. And to be honest, it's kind of gotten boring seeing those same alternate names for awhile, so I've never done it myself.

But the "impersonating someone else" issue... that, in my mind, is an even more compelling reason for this rule, especially with the growing number of users. On the other main board I go to, it was common practice for people post as "the FAKE [insert someone else's name here]" as a joke, and it was a hilarious thing for awhile, but eventually we ended up having those fakers out and out post as other people without putting "the FAKE" prefix in front of the name first. I was faked a couple times that way, which made me seriously livid. This hasn't been an issue here as far as I know, but I think with the troll problems we've had in the past, it could very easily happen during someone's holiday name change, or another time when several people just happen to be fooling around.

Props for this decision. It's fully supported by me. :)

That's all fine with me.

Typo, by the way. "Users will no longer have the ability...", not "Users will not longer have the ability...". Thought you should know.

:)

I've been waiting for this. Sometimes it's hard to keep track who's who on these boards because everyone changes their username so much.

One issue. I want to change back to my normal name of breadtangle, but someone took it when I had a different name...anything you can do, considering that user is no longer active?

You could change it to an association of it that no one would notice, like BreadTangle, or bread tangle.

Well, we're not about to go changing other people's usernames. You ought to try e-mailing or PMing the user to see if they'll change. If that doesn't work, you'll have to choose some variation.

Woah. This is kinda drastic, but I wont disagree with the higher-uppers.

Well, the change isn't until January, so we'll have time to change our holiday names back.

I'm gonna miss changing names for the holidays, though. :(

Same here, but oh well. I'll change back right now, considering that TwoTurtleDisks is a lame pun, anyway.

Ok, I can understand why you'd do this. But, why now? Is it just because it's only been brought up recently or what?

The only holiday I'm ever really gonna miss changing names for is Halloween. That was so fun. But oh well. I guess this is the best decision.

Same here. But we can still change our avvy's and sigs, so it won't be boring... or... not fun.
And name changing just is quite confusing. It took a long while before I found out who were behind those names.

Well, I've changed mine back, just so I don't end up forgetting... I personally agree with the decision. I don't see any problems with changing them to be Christmasy, but changing them in the middle of the year would be kinda confusing...

The legacy of Robot Day is doomed never to be repeated. :'( (PM me if I still haven't changed my name back after Christmas... I'll probably remember but whatever)

This has been one of the oddest forums as far as the way rules and regulations are governed that I have ever been a part of. I do not disagree with the decision, I just think it was one of those things that should already had been implemented. I mean, for one, you can't trust people... if I change my name, someone might take Power Crunch and refuse to give it back... hence the problem, it technically isn't owned by me so if I changed it I have no right to get it back since I gave up my right as soon as I changed it. It's not right for a mod to change it back either.

So I completely can see why. And I don't get why you all want to rename yourselves to holiday names. I mean, yeah, it's the holidays... but that's your USERNAME. It's not an avatar or a sig, it should be permanent. Lately I've noticed a lot of switching around, I'm kind of glad that it was an available option when I signed up because otherwise I'd still be Burninated and Loving It. heh.

But anyway, this board is crazy uptight about it's rules in some respects and in others seems to completely have missed the mark. To me, it makes perfect sense to have always had the username you select to be permanent.

But again, I'm agreeing with this decision.

I don't really have a problem with this. I mean, I can seriously understand. I was confused for a while as well. Of course, there's no effort on my part, as I never changed my name for Decemberween anyway.

By the way...you guys don't have to change back right now, as is my understanding. Feel free to keep your name for the holidays, but just remember to change it back before January 8th.

Ah, that's too bad. I liked the Haloween name changings. The Decemberween one's kinda got old, since it's been over a month with you guys havign them, btu it's still fun.

I'll be having a little fun with my name a couple days before the change, as a fun little sayign goodbye type thing.

Stu's idea of no-name-changing is brilliant! We can know each other more!

I'm gonna miss not being able to change my name. We had a lot of fun name-changing. Like that time in the Comeback Game when we randomly changed our names, and that time when me and Ace switched bodies, and Robot Day. Good times, good times. Well, everything's gotta end sometime.

Oh, ho ho...I remember that. You were Trombone, correct? Good times, good times.

Although I'll admit this'll make things easier on newer people.
