Post subject:  lack of updating

This may not have been true for all circumstances (especially when the site was young), but lately it seems to me that it's not TBC's style to give advance notice as to what's going on. Since they know fans will still keep track of the site after some downtime (look at us, we're all going nuts here) they seem to be using more of an element of surprise. Stuff tends to come out of nowhere and unexpectedly. You don't really see any notices like "new toon in a month." They know they don't really have to now, because fans are still frantically checking daily a month later. It's more like "something new soon" then it happens within a day. So, right now I'm expecting the unexpected. I predict something really cool happening when TBC returns to business. And if not, well, I'll probably be angry too.

Then why have they been hardly updating lately, and not even bothering with Xmas/new years toons, or even Weekly fan stuff. They'll probably continue as normal too, I guarantee it.

They're popular now; they don't have to give a crap about their fans.

I think that TBC were really dumb to not have posted a "See you on January nth!" type message, and it almost makes me think that something unfortunate has happened, but Rose, what you're posting is pure doody...

It's really easy: If you think that TBC are treating "you" so awfully, then quit going to the site. Quit posting here, too. If there's no new content for long enough, then people WILL quit visiting the site and generating income, so it is simple business sense to keep the sites content fresh.

The "fans" aren't being treated like crap, and TBC haven't just suddenly got popular and have therefore decided to abandon their fanbase. For all you know the business could be run by a completely seperate entity who are able to update parts of the site independantly from TBC.

You're doing an awful lot of [omitted] for someone who purports to be a fan.

Phil

*smile*
I'm not a spoiled little brat at all! Shame on you for leaping to that conclusion...

I maintain that it was a really bad business move. Look at all the fuss that has been kicked up over this. They are - rightly or wrongly - ticking quite a lot of people off and it is all unnecessary. I'm enormously grateful for the both high-quality and high-quantity entertainment that those two enthusiasts have provided for free for years! I should really support them by buying some stuff...But until I *do* buy some stuff, I'll support them by......saying that I think they are dumb to not have said something :) I just hope they don't read these boards, because if it were ME, I'd read all this griping, and shut the site down :P

It is to be hoped that they will, in the next couple of days, be publishing the feature film of Trogdor in glorious Hi-Def CinemaScope DTS7.1 Surround Sound SuperFlash-o-Mation.

I'm simply worried about TBC's and not the cartoon. As it's been pointed out this is never happened before(without making a note to fans) for a period this long. Can someone on this forum get into contact with TBC to see if there alright?

Imagine all the emails they must be receiving from fans asking about updates. Now, if you were in their situation wouldn't you rather leave a small note on the site saying your taking a break or just let your email box fill up? I'm sorry but I don't buy the "they are probably just taking a break thing", they wouldn't take a break this long without letting us know.

Also, if there computer crashed(which i'm sure they have more then one), it wouldn't take a full month to get it back up and running. In any case, I just hope they are being inconsiderate then something serious.

yeah we're all just overthinking this way too much. clear your minds, whip out the meditation CD's and find a happy place till the ball gets rollin' again. the only reason we're talking about this is because we have nothing to talk about. anyway, i'm probably not making much sense because it's 4 in the morning and I can't sleep. and, guess what, i have nothing to talk about :P

Are we in agreement that even if we don't admit it we are all at least to a minimal degree disappointed/upset/confused/hungry/worried/otherwise out-of-sorts due to the inactivity? Yay, okay, now nobody has to voice that in their posts anymore. Keep it for the blog, man.

so, whaddya think they'll release first? an email? a toon? both? neither?

i think they'll go with the holiday toon. Ooo, and I bet it might be some kind of interactive thingy like halloween! perhaps... or they are trying something totally new and different. i know it will be great, the d-ween toons are never a let-down.

EDIT: oh, and btw it would take more than a month for them to fix their computers if they did crash. especially if TBC lost all or even some of the flash stuff. remember, they are working off of a bunch of things drawn in flash that they have been collecting for YEARS. if they lost even a portion of that, it could take forever to redraw that stuff... and considering the holiday timing, it would take especially long to fix. not to sound pessimistic.

EDIT EDIT: And I think every good citizen of this forum would rather have the delay be caused by laziness or negligence or absence rather than by something bad happening. No one's that cold-blooded.

Well, something good (for me personally) came out of Homestar Runner's long silence... it helped me stumble across this forum while searching for answers!

Like most of you, I look forward to my SBE fix, and I'm disappointed when it's not there. When it's not there for several weeks, it is only natural to worry about it's creators, and to worry about the future of the cartoon. If people are being a bit grumpy about the lack of an update, it's just an expression of their frustration, because they are big fans, and miss the toons. I think it is important, however, for everyone to maintain a level of respect for two people who have provided us all with high-quality FREE entertainment (that has personally brought me many moments of laughter and joy) for years.

As for the retail/sales end of things, I read an online interview a while back which stated that the brothers used to run the retail end of their venture out of their basement, mailing out merchandise with the help of their parents... but that approach became impractical as their popularity/sales grew, so they hired a fulfillment company to handle the retail orders. So whatever the answer is to the long absence, it's unlikely to be related to the increased Christmas season retail sales. Unfortunately I can't seem to find the link to that interview (anyone else read it?). It was something I found through a Google search a year or two ago.

Whether it takes them another week, month, or year to put out a new toon, I'll still be there to view it, with a smile on my face.

Yet another fan brought in by the quietness of the site. I go way back, to like, sbe22 and all...

Anyhow, it is fairly common for any artist to take a bit of a sabbatical to refill the vat of creative juice (bad mental image there, sorry). My first reaction was "WTF?", but after perusing this thread and thinking about my own history, yeah, this is much better than forcing out some substandard work just for the sake of having something out there.

Did any of you take any time off over the holidays?

Cut the folks some slack, and the loyal fans will be handsomely rewarded, I am sure.

Post subject:  Re: Crappidy crap

You know what I find funny?
Several things.

1. The fact that TBC can't stop updating for one month without absoutly everyone in the entire forum all coming together to turn the matter into a ridiculous and througly stupid hodgepodge of whining, crying, screaming, acting selfish, being extremly petty and horribly ungrateful.

2. The fact that no one else can stand by and let those selfish whiners continue on with their selfish whining without having to be even MORE selfish than the first group of posters are, by taking the matter and making it even more ridiculous by screaming and arguing right back, and turning the ENTIRE matter into an incredibly childish back and forth mess.

3. The fact that topics keep getting locked, 100 more get made and 100 more get locked becuase of the whiners that whine and the whiners that see the need to fight back against the original whining whiners.

4. The fact that about 2% of people are legitimatly worried about TBC, and another 2% realise that we'll hear something if and when something indeed... happens.

5. The fact that all of the childish fighting CONTINUES, despite the fact that we really can't do crap about this until they decide to update anyway.

What does this all lead up to?
Well, at the risk of probably being labeled as a hypocrite by everyone else, just for daring to actually throw my 2 cents into this whole laughable mess of childish behavior and self-important whining on both sides.... here's what I think should happen:

Everyone should just shut up and chill out! Geez.

Is there a rocket scientist amoung the general population here who has figured that this simple remedy is probably a good idea?
Becuase if they have... than it sure as shootin' has not helped.
At all.

My opinion has probably has not helped either. Becuase this is pretty much the way the internet works.
In fact, i'll bet several people are already writing up a nice, long flame to try and tell me i'm full of crap. Save it. I won't bother replying. I'll say this and leave it, becuase the internet is always situated in such a way that anyone can get flamed for anything. So if someone wants to flame me, no skin off my back. I could care less.
So, i'm just saying this and leaving it at that. Say about me what you will. But I think that this makes a lot of sense.

So in summary: CHILL. OUT. EVERYONE.

OK, first I'll admit that I only read this thread up through page 2, then I jumped to page 4 and saw a bunch of bold and yelling, so let me just put in my 2 cents, calmly... :)

Personally I agree that TBC probably should have put up a notice that they would be out of commission for awhile, but I also know it could be something beyond their control. Every once in awhile I hear sometimes on the news about shooting in Atlanta and so on, and it makes me worry about TBC occasionally. I suppose it *COULD* be that they simply can't get to the website for God-knows-whatever-reason. I doubt it, but it's possible.

It's also possible that they're just monitoring their site traffic to see what happens when they disappear into thin air. Does it drop, does it start spreading out through the older toons, etc. They could be doing statistical studies on that.

I actually was surprised to hear how much they've acknowledged the Wiki and its users, because I had seen an interview once where Mike had said he pretty much stopped looking at H*R fansites when he saw someone saying they've jumped the shark, and he realized that no matter what, there will always be some people who are unhappy, and there will always be whiners. (I suppose we really know that now.) Why bother having that tugging at you? Why bother listening to such whining as what Rose started with in page 1 on this thread? He got a taste of what people like Rose had to say, and he didn't like it...so he stopped listening and started distancing himself from fans.

I don't think it's that they think they're "all that." It's just that they have lives outside of H*R.

And yeah, maybe they are growing a little tired of the H*R universe. I think what Rose was talking about in how they'd been lax on emails for the past year is that, honestly, at least for the latter half of '05, most of the emails really weren't so funny. (I started trying to help out by sending in an SBEmail, and then in parentheses below my email, threw out a couple of ideas on what wacky stuff they could do with it.) Strong Bad has become the star and I know TBC didn't really like that, so I've kinda excused the email-lax-ness as being their effort to bring Homestar back to center stage.

I came and hunted down this thread because of my dumb thoughts about "maybe they're dead" and all that stupid crap. :p Wanted to come and see if there was any news, because I was legitimately worried about them. Still am, a little. But geez, I sure didn't expect to see people screaming/whining/fighting over all this...

Just calm down, people. We'll hear something, eventually.

Post subject:  Silence is disappointing, but...

"Where are TBC?" is echoed through the forums.

It's been about a month since the last tangible update on HomestarRunner.com and people have had it.

Some are up in arms! Some are defending burnanation! Some are flaming, as Trogdor surrounded by thatched-roof cottages!

But the simple fact remains: Even if HomestarRunner.com is never updated again, TBC gave us something to enjoy for the rest of our lives.

What could they be doing? Anything. They could be working on that huge update everyone is hoping for. They could be taking time off to spend with loved ones. They might even be working diligently on the second volume of "Everything Else". Who knows? No one. When will we know? We will know when we know, as my Pappy used to say.

I'd like to ask that this thread be locked, simply because nothing new will come from it. It will continue in this same tedious loop of "They Suck/They Rule/You Suck/I Rule/Go TBC/TBC died/That's Dumb/Then, They Suck/They Rule".

So, in the words of Mrs. So-in-so-erson, "You little brats best shut yer yaps!"

Go watch some of the older cartoons and be happy. It's no use continuing on in this ridculous argument or speculation any longer.

Live. Breathe. Homestar.

Since the common thread here seems to be universally short attention spans (and tempers), I have my OWN preposterous theory to distract you kids:

TBC been hired to take the rest of "LOST, Season 2" to even higher levels of lunacy and upon the return of new shows (after a "coincidental" December break?), it will finally be revealed that the island is Strong Badia and Jack Bauer will swoop in to save Homestar after The Cheat is revealed as The Mole and Pom Pom "opens a port" from Jack's PDA to the countdown computer!

And The Poopsmith steps in frame to shockingly utter his first words which are "____________./.../!/!!!/?/!?"

(While you're thinking of that, perhaps you should Google: website update notify monitor, and use those extra 5 minutes you save every day/hour/half-hour checking the website for updates to: take a walk/take a chill pill/pray/meditate/call a loved one and ask them how they are...)

There are a few things that are never worth saying on a forum. The worst thing you can do is jump in a conversation and tell all the people to shut up and get a life. Which is essentially what TheNewX did.

I realize that and still do it too. That's the beauty of it. Every. One. Has. To. Express. Their. Opinion. No. Matter. What! lol.

But what else is there to do H*R related? Certainly no new toons to watch yet. lol. So running this in circles is all there is to really do for awhile. I generally only post when new toons and games come out so, I have nothing else to talk about here really for now.

I'm all for the feature film of Trogdor when TBC return. (that is not a serious remark so please don't go "Oh they will never make that your ridiculous.") :)

Maybe they'll explain the long absence by the death of a popular character. Like maybe somehow StrongSad finally dies and for the rest of the cartoons history he keeps appearing as a ghost to people, but still blatantly ignored and made fun of. hahaha.... sorry.

i think TBC are just taking some down time because they know they can. a couple years ago we could go months without an update. if there was really anything wrong i doubt that they wouldnt go on the site only to extend a sale.

You know, I think that most people are disappointed/angry/worried, not because of a lack of -updates-, but because of a lack of a -decemberween toon-. Looking at the wiki, we've had decemberween toons four out of the past five years. For some reason one wasn't made for 2003. I guess people (like me) just expected there to be one, and I'm personally just...confused as to why there wasn't one.

Granted TBCs have lives outside the website...but for them to just ignore decemberween entirely? And then go one to ignore New Years? It happened in 2003, does anyone know why?
