I use both Firefox and IE on a daily basis. In fact, I'm using them both right now. Both of them have relative strengths and weaknesses, and I actually prefer... Internet Explorer. There are certain things that Firefox doesn't load very well and certain formatting conventions that I suppose are personal tastes, but the kicker for me is that I have yet to find a way to search for text within a form field (like this text-entry box, for example). In short, Firefox is not the end-all-be-all of browsers. |

To search within a form-feild, type your entry in the form-feild, press Ctrl-F, and then type your search in the "Find:" bar. Then, click "Highlight all". Firefox will then Highlight all instances of your search term in the text box. The Find Next/Find Previous searches only search within the text that was recived from the remote site. |

That does work, although it's hardly a graceful solution, and not very handy on long wiki edit boxes where I could easily scroll past the term you're searching for. I also don't like that it buzzes at me when it can't find text because it exists only in a form field. Still, it's better than nothing, so thanks. |

They patented a certain way that a browser they developed handled multimedia plugins, and Microsoft used the exact same method for IE. I may be wrong, but I think that the Click to Activate thing is just a temporary solution until they rewrite that part of IE's code. |

What "college" are you talking about? The patent belongs to Eolas, a corporation. And just read the Wikipedia article if you want to know what it's about. Your mom doesn't cut your food into little pieces for you anymore, and we shouldn't have to "fill you in" because you're too lazy to read a few paragraphs. |

Get a clue and stop using Internet Explorer. As has been repeatedly repreated here in this thread, Firefox doesn't have this issue. Never has, never will. |

Two things: 1) Chill the heck out. 2) If Eolas sued Mozilla Corp. and won, as they did against Microsoft, Firefox would (out of the box, at least) have the exact same issue, so your "never has, never will" prediction is, unfortunately, not a bet I would put money on. So far Firefox is under the radar--or maybe someone at Eolas has a soft spot for open source--but it won't remain that way forever and you shouldn't take it for granted. |

I prefer Netscape.
IE has some security issues, but I don't understand why everyone rags on it so much. Firefox loads pages extremely poorly for me, and that's even with my lovely lappy, and I don't care much for that pop-up blocker. (Yup, you heard me right. IT IRKS ME.) NN lets me view pages in both Firefox format and IE format, so I don't mind. My .02.

I generally use firefox, but in some cases, I.E. is much better.. so
FOR INSTANCE.. when I'm typing on a message board, I can use search in ie to search within my own post (for instance, I could search for the word "typing" while still writing this post). ie will find it.. firefox won't. I'm not trying to make this an ie vs firefox flame war, but I'm just saying that there's no need to completely stop using ie just because firefox generally gets the upper hand. |

Except there's a reason Eolas didn't sue Mozilla. Namely, none of Mozilla's code infringes on Eoal's copyright. |

The case was a patent dispute, not a copyright dispute. It has nothing to do with code. Eolas never accused Microsoft of using or otherwise infringing on any of its code. It accused Microsoft of using the user interface concepts that it patented. Firefox uses the same concepts Internet Explorer did, and is just as valid a target for a patent lawsuit. You will perhaps find the Wikipedia article enlightening. |

You will perhaps find the Wikipedia article enlightening. I was under the impression that Microsoft has actually stolen code from Eoals. That's what I get for reading online techie forums. I had read something (I don't remember what) on Neowin.net that gave me the wrong impression. My bad.
The whole software pattent issue is thorny, and I'm glad I'm not a lawyer. In any case, it seems to me that current pattent law is outdated when it comes to software. They need to come up with a better way to deifne when a patent expires than simply a fixed amount of time; The concept of generational change needs to come into play. Not that I'm a fan of patenting software in the first place. |
