Apparently you have to set what program greasemonkey uses to open files (it won't just use your default text editor). In about:config, there's a value called greasemonkey.editor. So just set that to your supercool text editor (or if you don't have one set it to C:\windows\notepad.exe).

How do I "edit user script?" I know little of these "user scripts" of which you speak, or rather, where/how to edit one.

Weren't you getting on my case just the other day about double-posting... a year ago? Erg.

If you want help editing, please read the rest of this thread where it's explained at least twice.

Tools > Manage User Scripts. The rest should be answered in this thread. (btw weren't you just complaining about double-posting?)

Anyways, they have some pretty cool scripts for phpBB forums at userscripts.org:
http://userscripts.org/home/boring_search?search=phpbb
I have a couple of them. There's one that makes sure the page never gets stretched and another for quick reply / quick edit.
EDIT: Wow, they even have one that puts all the posts onto one page...
EDIT AGAIN: I also didn't realize how much of a simulpost this was... usually I delete it when that happens but it's too late now I guess.

Did you do that about:config thing I said a few posts back (and at least one or two other times in the thread)?

I'm pretty sure the edit buttons work. The only time a button won't work is when you try to delete a post after someone else has posted after you.

I'll try it now, just to be sure.

EDIT: Yup, it works.[/s]

As for your problem with editing them, just go here. They explained it all in detail to me. Just read down until I posted "SUCCESS!" or something.

EDIT MAJOR: Oh, you're talking about the Greasemonkey edit button. Hold on...

Here. Read on from there until success.

And then...

So, you find a text editor, genius. Like, you find one and then the script loads onto it. Then you can edit the script.

Wow, I can't believe that's happening to everyone.
Anyways, try that about:config thing I said on the second post of the page.

OK, did it.

Great, now I can't get Edit to change to a different word processor!

What is it on right now? c:\windows\notepad.exe? You can set it to something else if you want.

Wait, why do we have to have this script to have new ones? Why can't we just have the officially in the forums?

I can't use FireFox for reasons beyond my power, so I can't even use these!

Well, if they add these to the forums, then more and more people will want to add all different types. You can add any type you want with this script. I don't think that Stu's going to add the NO WAI! Owl to the emoticon list anytime soon.

I have this problem too. It won't let me edit with Works, and I don't know how to change it.

....

What now?

Look for Notepad as the program you wanna use to edit the file...I'm still trying to figure it out myself...

um...you could create a shortcut to Notepad on the Desktop; that way, when you go back to the Manage User Scripts box & click Edit, you can just find Notepad on the Desktop, & voilà!

Well, I'm guessing that you should open it up. I think the same happened with me.

Hey, ramrod, do you know how to change programs in that Edit box? I'm trying to NOT make it open Works Word Processor!

When did I become the Tech guy? I know next to nothing about that stuff. IJ would be much better at that stuff.

I'm gonna have to be a jerk and just say that I can't support the current version. FYI, an answer to your question is buried in one of the previous posts in this thread. I tried to answer it to the best of my ability before, as did others, but if you don't know how to change file associations in your OS of choice, I'm not the person to teach you.* (The short version: You need to configure your OS to always open .js files with a text editor like Notepad.)

On the upside, while I let this particular project flag for awhile, I'm back on it and made a lot of progress tonight. I now have a working preferences box (as promised weeks ago) that eliminates the whole stupid Edit process. I have a couple more improvements and quite a bit of testing to go before I can release it, but I'm hoping to get it out the door this week. Image

*I don't mean this condescendingly. Changing file associations isn't exactly a skill everyone ought to have. I'm just saying I can't help you figure it out, 'cause I suck.

Here's the answer. I just found it.

ed 'lim' smilde wrote:
To get to about:config, type 'about:config' in the address bar and hit enter. Then, a whole buncha stuff in a huge table. Then, in the 'filter' thing, type 'greasemonkey.editor', then there should only be one entry. On the right, it'll probably have something there, so just right-click and delete it (or set it to the directory of your text editor). If you delete the value the window should come up again next time you try to edit the script.

phpBB Auxiliary Emoticons (pAU) v0.9 beta

That's right, I actually put some work into this thing and now it sucks less! Click on the above link to install. (Note: you must have Firefox with the Greasemonkey extension installed to use pAU.) This is a beta release, which means some of it was coded hastily and I'm afraid it will explode. As usual, if you find a bug please post it here with as many details as you possibly can (i.e. what preferences you have set, what you were trying to do, and what happened or did not happen).

WARNING: If you have a previous version of the script installed, it will be overwritten and any changes you have made to it will disappear. I no longer recommend or support editing the file itself--if you want to use a custom emoticon set, upload a .json file somewhere and put its URL in the Options dialog (see below).

Here's what's new
  • Options dialog (script editing is no longer recommended or supported--see below)
  • Ability to use a (theoretically) unlimited number of emoticon sets simultaneously
  • Improvements and fixes to cursor placement when "extra spaces" option is enabled
I think there's more, but that's all I can remember.

Image

How to use the Options dialog
To access the Options dialog you must be on a posting page (e.g. New Topic or Reply). Go to Tools > User Script Commands > phpBB Aux. Emoticons Options. The Options dialog is pretty straightforward. If you change options and click Save, you must reload/refresh the posting page for the changes to take effects.

Note: There is currently a bug that causes the menu option in User Script Commands to appear several times. If this occurs, the last menu option is the one that will work.

How to make a custom emoticon set
Instructions on creating emoticon sets can still be found in the sample.json file. While you can still edit the user script itself to make a custom emoticon set, I no longer recommend this and may not answer related questions. Instead, I recommend making a .json file and uploading it somewhere, then using the Options dialog to configure pAU to use it. If there's enough demand, I'll write a little tutorial on how to host pseudo-.json files on your HRWiki user page or cl1p.net.

Bugs
A few known bugs remain, but I don't consider them serious (unknown bugs, on the other hand...):
  • If you are using more than one emoticon set, the order they will appear is unpredictable. This might get fixed, but probably not any time soon.
  • If two emoticon sets have emoticons with the same name (e.g. ::smile::), the second to load will override the first. This will probably be at least partially fixed sometime.
  • After you click Save in the Options dialog, you must reload the page (or load a new page) for option changes to take effect. I would like to fix this, but it will take some refactoring, so don't expect it any time soon.
  • The Options command in User Script Commands sometimes appears several times, and only the last one works. This one has me mystified, but I hope to have it fixed in the next release.

As usual, any and all feedback and bug reports are appreciated. I hope you enjoy it. Image
