I'm going to a folk rock festival next week, actually.

When you say folk rock, do you mean folk music in general?
Like folk punk and folk metal and Led Zeppelin and blues and stuff.

Does Rusted Root count as folk rock? I'm really loving their first album, and they'll be at that festival. (They had a song in Ice Age apparently.)

Against Me! has one foot firmly planted in this thread and the other is half in the punk thread and half in some threads that haven't been created yet. Good band though.

Well, I listen to quite a bit of folk rock.
But Against Me! are one of my my favorite folk rock bands so I thought I'd put 'em in here.

My favorite folk punk band is probably definitely Defiance, Ohio. They put out their stuff for free and they're absolutely ridiculously good. They also play totally acoustic. Well, up until their most recent album where they used an electric bass to boos their bass sound.

Against Me! is pretty alright. Their newer stuff doesn't scratch my folk punk itch the way, say, As The Eternal Cowboy did and that's a bit of a disappointment.

Is this the right category for the New Pornographers?

Also I like that Defiance Ohio song

I'd say The New Pornographers are more indie rock or indie pop-rock.

Plan-It-X Records and Against Me! have to be my favorites as far as folk/punk is concerned. I think this would be the appropriate place to mention singer/songwriter guys like Nick Drake, Elliott Smith, Bright Eyes, Mark Kozelek (from Red House Painters and Sun Kil Moon), etc.

Also maybe:

How did I forget The Mountain Goats and The Magnetic Fields? Some awesome songwriting on both fronts.

Gotta love Bob Dylan. And has anyone ever heard Al Stewart? Maybe not his earlier stuff, but "Past, Present, and Future" is a great album.
