Forget googling your dad. Google yourself. When I type in my name it pops up info about some guy who writes new age/religious books.

It's hard for me to Google myself because my last name is a common verb (present tense), and so I get a lot of false positives. Boo.

I've done that a few times. A few of the entries are about me, but mostly there are just links for universities and stores and news from the town of Crookston Minnesota.

One time Dave Barry mentionde in a column that he's used Windows since the first version, "which required you to write on the screen with crayons. I've also bought Windows 2.0, Windows 3.0, Windows 3.1415624, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows RSVP, The Best of Windows, Windows Strikes Back, Windows Does Dallas and Windows Let's All Buy Bill Gates A House The Size Of Vermont."

Funny.

I always get a bunch of professors. I guess that's pretty cool, though.

Oh, yeah, sorry (I forgot that people still pay for Microsoft software. No, seriously, I did*).

I'd still be stumbling along with ME if the computer science department at my University hadn't had some fancy dancy deal with Microsoft to get all their students a buttload of software for free.

I've taken a lot of classes involving measurements during my education, but I've still never been able to quantify a "buttload".. LOL

About googling oneself.. I have been leading a triple life, one as myself, one as a retired US Navy Admiral (boo navy! Go ARMY! LOL), and one as a, pretty good, shortstop for Mississippi State. I always wanted to meet that guy, just to ask him why he stole my baseball ability and name.

At least it's better than Windows Me, which is a worse abomination of an OS. It stands for Machine Euthaniser, not Millenium Edition. That's what it did to my b0x. I had to use a GNU/Linux boot disk to repartition everything, then I installed Windows 95 and I found out that my cable modem/NIC didn't support it, then I had to install Windows XP [GASP] (where's the green puking emoticon?) and I dual-booted it with GNU/Linux (which won't boot (partition related) and I can't restore it because my floppy drive is broken and I can't use Smart BootManager to boot from CD to reinstall it). I'm back to using Windows XP, because it's the only one I had. I should have gone with that Mini-Windows 98 I saw online. Windows XP is a worse abomination, but I have to use it because I tried to do something partition-related on GNU/Linux and it became unbootable, and I can't restore it because even if I tell my BIOS to boot from CD first, it disobeys and boots from the hard disk drive!

Have you tried putting it in quotation marks?
Anyway, here are my compy's specifications:

Computer Model: Custom built (a relative built it)
CPU: Intel Celeron 400MHz
Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Professional <sprays McDonald's>; Mandrakelinux 10.0 Official (unbootable, see 1st paragraph)
RAM: 128MB
Video Card: NVIDIA Riva TNT
Sound: Sound Blaster 16
Monitor: 17'' CRT (I wish I had a 20" LCD)
Keyboard: Logitech Access Keyboard
Mouse: Logitech Marble Mouse (earlier model with 2 buttons instead of 4)

Yes. The trouble with quotation marks is that Google is very lax about it. Type in two words in quotes and it will match those two words with all sorts of punctuation in between. Compound this with the fact that my last name is a common athletic activity and my first name is the last name of a famous athlete and also a country, and you'll begin to understand the difficulty.

One time, I tried to search for "b-b-buddy" (Roald the Penguin's catchphrase on Animal Crossing), and it came up with stuff for a BB gun. The only symbol that Google detects (other than parameters like - and +, but only as parameters) is _(underscore). Also, if you type a phrase with 11 words or more, it will cut off the 11th word and any subsequent ones! What if those final words were important?!

If you're typing eleven-word queries then you need help.

My current config:

Pentium III - 667 MHz
256 MB memory
20 GB hard drive + 8 GB hard drive
Riva TNT2 32 MB video card

I'm really tired of it. It's slow and incapable of running WarCraft III with any of the graphic effects turned on (and it gets really choppy when there are more than about 15 guys on the screen). Both of my hard drives are chock full, and I really don't have a lot of stuff installed (a lot of it is mp3 files).

I just bought my fiancée a laptop, and should be getting one for me before the end of the year. Here are the specs I'm shooting for:

Pentim M (Centrino Mobile) 1.8 GHz GHz
1 GB memory
80 GB hard drive
Intel Extreme 64 MB graphics card
802.11b/g internal wireless
built-in SD card reader

Because of optimization, the 1.8 GHz Pentium M is approximately equivalent to a P4 2.8 GHz, but with better battery life. It's a little more expensive than the equivalent P4, but well worth the price.

The graphics card is probably not the best, but I don't play many games other than WarCraft III (and the occasional game of Descent 2 or 3), so it should suit my needs well.

The SD reader will be nice for moving files back and forth between my PC and my Palm.

Man, I had an EGA card back in the '80s. I rocked the 4-bit hardcore.

That won't work. DSL is CD-based, therefore I can't boot from it, let alone install it.

Why can't you boot from a CD? Unless your CD-ROM is bwoke or your mobo is more than 6 or 8 years old, you should have no trouble making it a boot device if it isn't already.

So what, exactly, happens when you boot up your compy?

I have a boot floppy that boots from CD, and the floppy drive won't work.
Also, even if I tell my BIOS to look in the CD drive first, no matter which drive in which I put the CD, it ignores it and boots from the HDD.

When I boot up my compy, it displays the boot information, then says the CPU is unworkable and makes me press F1 to continue, but it doesn't seem to affect anything. Next, it dieplays some information too fast for me to read it, then LILO appears. I have some Linux kernel options, a floppy option, and a Windows option. As of this writing, I can only boot into Windows. <pukes> Then it loads Windows XP, then it pops up with the login screen. I just enter my name and password, and it loads the startup applications.

My configuration is worse:
Celeron - 400MHz
128MB memory
15GB (approximately, not sure about the whole disk) hard drive
Riva TNT (not sure, probably 16MB or 8MB) video card

My compy doesn't even have a floppy drive. Makes it really hard to bring files back and forth between work and home. I could email them, but the Concordia network is about as reliable as WMD intelligence.
