Post subject:  The British Cult Comedy and Film thread
I'm probably betraying the auld Nationalist Cause by saying this, but I think the films and comedies the UK produces has to be the best ever. I say this because I've just been loading up on British comedies and films over the past few weeks, and I'm buzzin'. :mrgreen:

Anyway, what do you make of British comedies and films? Here are just some of my favourites.......

Films:
Shaun of the Dead (<<< the most stylish film of recent years, no contest)
Withnail and I (<<< one of the few films I'd call a must-see classic)
Trainspotting
Quadrophrenia
Tristram Shandy

Comedies:
Spaced
The Mighty Boosh
The Office
Porridge
Phoenix Nights
Black Books
M P's F C (<<< Do I even need to explain what this stands for???)
Little Britain
Dave Allen at Large (<<< Dave himself was Irish, but the show was very 1970's BBC. Very Monty Python, in fact)

There are definately more, but I can't think of them now. You?

Well, on Phoenix nights.
In season 2 or something.
My friends dads a psychic you see. he can see spirits.
And he was sorta included in an episode of it, heh, that ruled.

There are a couple of good American comedies, but they're often mindless so my friends & I have to be in the right mood for them. British comedies, on the other hand, usually rely on cleverness, nuance, and this feeling I can only describe as "optimistic pessimism" (or the other way).... see "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" You know what I mean? Is there a real term for that? Anyway, they really speak to the absurdity of life instead of being just plain weird.

As for non-comedies, I haven't seen too many. Shaun of the Dead was good, but not amazing, and I've heard Trainspotting was good.. nothing about the rest tho.

It bugs me that we in the US feel we need "our" version of these shows where they speak Murrkin. The new versions are better than most other shows, but only half as good as the originals. How 'bout we learn to understand British English? It's not that hard.. Of course I learned to speak in England from a Scottish nanny, so maybe I don't know what it's like for the rest of us. My mom says when the Beatles movies came out in theaters here in the 60s, as soon as all the teenage girls stopped screaming, they tried listening to what they were saying, found they couldn't understand a word they were saying, and just started screaming again.

Speaking of which, the Beatles' movie Help! is seriously underrated. It's hilarious!

About The Mighty Boosh....... er, yeah, you probably wouldn't heard of that in America. But a lot of the episodes are on YouTube. I demand that you go find them, it's a fantastic show.

Yeah, I don't like that either. No one needs an American version of Absolutely Fabulous - yuuch. Having said that though, the American version of The Office was decent.

Really? I saw Yellow Submarine when I was four and it made perfect sense to me.

Well. You know what I mean.

...Yellow Submarine is just flipping awesome. Blue Meanies FTW! And... errr... I never figured out... was the Blue Meaner Leader supposed to be male or female? It fell in love with Jeremy at the end, I think, but it had a mustache...?

Benny Hill could make me laugh until I hurt. (If you said "Who?" It was before your time)

Monty Python is awesome:
"Your arm's off"
"No, its not"
"What's that on the ground then?!..."


Douglas Adams is great too. How often do you laugh outloud, at a book, so hard that people around you are checking the yellow pages for the number to the closest mental hospital? All the Hitchhiker books did that to me.

Check out the radio versions too. They're very different from the books, but still fantastic.

being yet another lame american i am not too well versed in UK film or tv. BUT shaun of the dead is one of my all time favorite movies, and i know a couple others.

Trainspotting is super great, even though it is one of the most horrifying movies i've ever seen.

The Office is awesome, both in the british version and the American adaptation.

and yeah, i also really like keeping up appearances and most of all....

I think our class watched The Yellow Submarine in 6th Grade. It was hilarious, including when one of my guy-friends started imitating "There's a hole in me pocket." line. He got it to the T.

Monty Python's pretty good, too.

I don't like Little Britain too much. I find it to be a lot of fun to quote, but no fun to watch.

My favourite British comedy is Red Dwarf. That show was hilarious. I always felt a bit sorry for Rimmer. I wonder if the movie will end up being made? I'd like a bit of closure. The eighth season was a bit weird. Actually a lot weird.
