Definately Jetix which was formerly known as Fox Kids. A lot of the shows that made that channel crap are gone. Even though there are still some crap shows a lot of them are great. |

I thought it went from cool to crap, then cool again, then recently back down to crap when it switched to extended cable and changed the lineup. Anyway, one thing that went from crap to cool is portable music. Sure, the Walkman was revolutionary at the time, but now there's a lot more music that can be played in something that's smaller than the Walkman. In retrospect, it seemed like crap at the time. But good crap at least.

For some reason, it's a lot harder to think of things that started out bad and got good than the other way around. The only thing I can even remotely think of is Salvador Dali, who started out "meh", then got into drippy clocks & stuff ("cool") and then really out there religious art ("AWESOME!"). That dude just got crazier and crazier, for the better. Supposedly some hippie icon like Timothy Leary or Jerry Garcia met him at a party somewhere and was talking about drugs, and Dali said something like "I don't need drugs, I AM DRUGS!" More crazy artists please. |

The Wizard of Oz went from crap to cool when I learned about the guy who hung himself and I stopped being afraid of the lion. |

American Dad. I thought the pilto and first few episodes were terrible, but then I kept hearing great things about it on Toonzone so I gave it another chance. Now it's one of my favourite cartoons. |

MANDY THE URBAN LEGEND ENTHUSIAST TO THE RESCUUUUUUEEEEE! ...Wow, I'm the lamest superhero ever. And someone mentioned Bonus Stage...well, I sorta agree and sorta disagree. Compared to the later episodes, yeah, the earlier episodes suck, but there are still some good moments. (CREEPY ENDING!) But they're definitely not as good as the later ones. So I wouldn't say it went from crap to cool, just that the early episodes are crappy compared to the later ones. But this is just my opinion, and I totally understand where you're coming from. Also, I'm, lyk, the only person who didn't like Joel and Phil's original voices. They didn't fit somehow. Another one: The Simpsons. Season one was kinda not so good. Homer's voice was annoying, nobody was well characterized, and the animation SUCKED! But by season two it was a great show. (My favorite episode, in fact, is from season two: Lisa's Substitute.) Of course, then it went downhill again... |

Of course, then it went downhill again... I don't feel like buying the DVDs, so I just watch them off the internet. |

I'll second portable music. I mean, 8-tracks, Doubleyou Tee Eff? But now you got MP3 players. Rocks. |

I know that at first reaction, someone will get mad, but we have to admit it: Homestar runner. It was just a kids book. Then it was some cartoons (slightly poorly made, BTW). Finally, somewhere down the line, it became awesome. And props to TBC for redoing some of their old stuff, like the KOT and Yello Dello DVDs. |

Nah, I don't think the Simpsons got good until season 3. I love "Star Raving Dad" and "Saturdays of Thunder". Then the Simpsons were in a golden age until about 1997. Then *some* of the episodes began to suck. My crap to cool: The internet. It sucked in the 90's, but by the 2000's it got really awesome. |

This is gonna sound really dumb, but Pokemon movies. The first one was super lame. Second one cooler. I recently watched Destiny Deoxys, a really recent one, and it was flipping AWESOME. You know. To a Pokemon fan. |

The second one was so/so, and the third was decent crap. Then they started going straight to DVD, and got progressivly crappy. |

Whenever they ran out of ideas, they just made more pokemon. It eventually followed a formula, and lost its appeal, mostly. It's still okay, but just a shadow of what it used to be. More things that went from crap to cool: BBSes: dialing up? That was way too much work! Mitch hedberg's stand-up career. (Crap to cool to dead) |

Hmm... things that went from crap to cool... Here's an obvious one: The Internet. I mean, alt.newsgroups to Homestar Runner... how much more crap to cool can it get? Here's another one, but maybe more personal: American Anime. Sure, there are exceptions to those being crap to cool, but can anyone compare, say, Fullmetal Alchemest or Bleach or the other Adult Swim Non-Mecha Animes to the old-school Dragonball Z? Geez, I get sick even thinking about how I used to halfway like DBZ, but Bleach et al are amazing. I just wish Naruto had followed the same trend; unfortunately, America decided that that one was apparently too good to be left alone and completely ruined it. |

I just wish Naruto had followed the same trend; unfortunately, America decided that that one was apparently too good to be left alone and completely ruined it. I have never found Bleach cool. There are waaaay better dubs out there. Better plots too. As far as I've seen, it's still just a fairly generic battleme. And the dubbing still needs work. XD So far, I've seen maybe one or two anime shows dubbed correctly, with the rest being movies. </endbleachrant> Still better than Naruto though, IMO.
But when you said American anime, I thought you meant anime-styled American shows. Which I'll agree with. The earliest examples of American anime ripoffage were dumb and ugly, but Avatar is awesome--great art, deep plot and characters, humorous without resorting to overused anime techniques, and unlike any American-made cartoon I've seen in a long time, it makes me cry. And it too has really improved from its start, even though its start was still fairly strong. |
