I am currently researching/writting my final year disertation on the topic of:
What factors have created an audience for web-based animation?

If anyone would like to contribute please comment on the following questions or respond with any relevant ideas.

why do you watch web/flash toons?
why would you watch them over other media for example TV?
do you prefer the automated 'user run' portals - what benefits/disadvantages does it offer?
benefits/disadvantages of moderated portals

Thanks all!

Okay... I will, I guess...

1. They're funny and more on-demand than TV, and I can watch them quickly without interrupting anything else (since they're only a few minutes long) and I can pause and replay them as many times as I want.
2. Like #1, more on-demand and shorter, which is nice. They also avoid many of the cliches from TV and they are MUCH more original. I also prefer them over movies because I don't like sitting down for 2 hours to watch something.
3. Is this question about websites like these? Then in a way, no. I think websites need leaders, but leaders that the user can interact with. Administrators shouldn't just be there to delete people's mistakes, they should give the users freedom and talk to them when they do something wrong.

I think Robbie was talking about something within the general scope of Newgrounds.

So...

I watch web cartoons because they are available, on-demand, as lim said, and often very good.

I prefer them to television because they are often of higher quality, as far as humor goes, and more convenient, in the sense of always being available without some fancy TiVo device to record them for you.

The user-run portals, e.g. Newgrounds, do have some advantages. The content is often much more diverse, and sometimes, this abundance of content creates an abundance of good content. However, there is a sense of anarchy, and sometimes the users' preferences for cartoons do not match yours, causing something you may like to dwindle in popularity, and sometimes just disappear (this is why the "blamming" system is far from perfect). The content can also be considerably less consistent in those portals.

Oh, I see. Well, I think someday someone should make a website that's like a mix between albinoblacksheep and digg. Users could submit flash material, people vote, and the highest ones get displayed on the front page, and there'd be different categories on the sides.
