Try being romantic to him first, maybe he'll catch on. Or maybe you can drop subtle hints, such as being more disinterested in something when he's not being romantic....if that makes sense.
Or you could just tell him that he's not very romantic.

Telling him he's not very romantic isn't going to do any good. He might already be trying to be romantic but he just sucks at it. The best I could do with romance was surprise my ex-lady type with flowers or her favorite candy. Sometimes I'd just randomly kiss her on the cheek and whisper "You're beautiful" in her ear. It's not the kind of romance she wanted but that was the best I could do and she still liked it.

I love being in control of my [ex]girlfriend. She won't stop begging me to get back together with her so she is at my disposal to do whatever I would like with. That puts me on the 'win' half of a win-lose situation.
