I want to know about the first "Browser War" if any of you people were on the Internet at that time. I know that now is a stupid time to ask about any of this, but I'm curious as to what people who were around during the first one thought.

Oh, so it's like the console wars, except slightly less pointless.

No none are pointless. They all have a point. The one who controls the browser controls how millions upon millions of people see the Internet. The console wars are for dominance of the gaming industry, but back on topic.

If anybody could tell me what the first browser war was like, please post!!!

Well, you did just link to an article giving the whole thing in detail...

I grew up back then. My dad was one of the first on the internet (MUDs, lol), and even wrote a few books about it. Great, great times!

Ah, them days.

So there was Netscape, and then IE came along. And actually, IE was superior. It could just do more. It had the DHTML support, which back then was like choosing between going to the friend's house that had a 3-foot-diameter trampoline and the one with the frikkin moon bounce. So people picked the moon bounce, because everyone loves those.

I found some old web pages I made back then, and they all say IE required in small print on the bottom. Nowadays, they're more likely to say IE users get out.

Besides being able to do more with the webpages, Netscape was just clunkier. They shoved too many functions into their browser, which slowed it down, and then took too long putting in the stuff people actually wanted. And then IE also looked better and newer superficially. You know how every new generation of programs looks less... boxy? It's like that. Netscape Navigator still looks boxy even at the latest version today.

So... there's some rambling for you.

No, no. I want someone's perspective, not some neutral Wikipedia article.

I want some real opinions on which was the better browser and what it was like to just be on the internet back then. Was there tension between groups of browser users? C'mon, you can tell me!

Also, during my research I have found that both Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer share the same lineage. And since Firefox is like the great grandkid of Netscape Navigator... FIREFOX AND INTERNET EXPLORER ARE RELATED!

I was too young to realize there was an actual war going on, but I do remember having both Netscape and IE (mmm...Dial-up). I liked IE better.

Well, it was like html, but 3D. My browsers on my older computer still support it, and I've been tinkering with it.

Of course, you had to keep the polygon levels extremely low, and it looked terrible when compared to online 3D games nowadays like Counter-Strike or MMOs.

It was hailed as the browsing of the future, but eventually faded out... Now it's been replaced by some other 3D standard which isn't supported by browsers either, but it's still used in education and stuff, but not the internets.

Same here, except I don't think I liked any one better. I think I used Netscape more, though - it was the first browser I knew of.

I don't remember the past too much, but years ago I can remember using AOL along with Internet Explorer on a Windows 95 computer (this was probably around 1997/1998). That's about it.

Ha ha, I had AOL for the first 7 years of my life on the internet. D:

It was only on March of this year that I got broadband.

For me back then, it was between Netscape, AOL, and IE. AOL was our ISP, and we had Netscape installed, but I always used IE.

Always used IE.

Until recently. Now I use Firefox because a year or so ago, some people here would beat down and/or laugh at people who used IE and said they were experiencing problems.

Wait, we still do that.

I modified my Firefox to where places think I'm using IE 4 and on a Linux box when I have Firefox 2 and XP.

I remember I tried Opera and I used Mozilla Suite for awhile. Then I use IE7, bu now I'm hooked on Firefox. The best choice I ever made, though IO think I might try Opera again, just for kicks...

But yeah, toastpaint. This is about the First Browser War. Not the current one. All I know is what I've read on the good ole 'kpedia. So those who were around, please tell some war stories to use young 'uns.

Well, I remember back when I used AOL (I was only 5, but I was more computer literate than most adults at the time), there were a bunch of browsers, but it didnt matter nearly as much as it does today.

I remember compuserve trying to take back the feild in the mid-90s, but abandoning hourly rates for monthly subscriptions.

I remember thinking that instant messaging was awesome, and wondering why no one else used it (It started with AOL 3.0 or 4.0, I think). This was before major chat clients were popular.

I actually still use my aol browser from time to time, just for the instant messaging, and because it is actually faster than loading up the aol homespage. I just occasionally check my email address. It's about 11 years old.
