I think what Jon is pointing out is this: Your mother had a miscarriage. Does she walk around all day feeling sorry for herself? I'm willing to bet no. I'm sure it still hurts a bit if she thinks about it, but I'm also sure she moved on. She had another child, and I'm sure she is extremely thankful, and finds happiness in that. Miscarriages are hard to deal with. But just because you have a miscarriage doesn't mean you are consumed by grief for the rest of your life. Which my opinion, is a pretty tactless thing to say. For some women, it is the end-all and be-all, especially if they've been desperately trying for a baby. It just irritates me when men try to talk about intimate women issues as if they understand the ins and outs of the complicated emotional system of women. /sexist rant |

For some women, that inadequacy hits hard and to have a miscarriage after celebrating pregnancy can be devastating. I've known women who went into serious, deep depression, and they've known women in their support groups who had to be hospitalized. Like I said, there's a lot of differences and emotional levels. Women are complex, even though logically you can step back and say "Well, they can just adopt. Well, they can just do this. Well, my mom/girlfriend/sister's/etc can handle it, so can she." It doesn't work that way. |
