So yesterday I was reading one of these terrible books written about drugs, teen pregnancy, and stuff like that. It wasn't really a book, it was more like a binder with a bunch of pages thrown in made by some sixth graders who were only following their teachers instructions in writing it, and they said that it was written by students to make it look cute.

So anyway, I was browsing the wordart-filled pages when I found the section on how to tell if your boyfriend/girlfriend may be abusive. The first two "warning signs," as they called them were:

1. He/She attacks you in your sleep.
2. He/She tries to kill you.

Talk about warning signs.

Do you go to a public school or a private school? If you go to a public school there's a lot of existing case law regarding students' freedom of expression. BME has a good article on the topic. The main question is whether your long sleeves and piercings actually qualify as expression rather than just fashion.

Well, you know, I did offer Jonathan a decent solution for his distaste of this particular thread. While I myself concur that this "Game" doesn't make sense to me, I pretty much stay out of that Game Losing thread myself. My thought: as long as they keep it there and don't bother the rest of us with it, I don't really care. On the other hand, they should keep it there and not bother the rest of us with it.

I don't know, but the kid had to go through some pain to get it untangled.
The fact is that high school students can be rowdy, but expression of who we are should not be stifled this far in a public school system. But whenever the school gets valid points against new rules, they just shut their eyes, close their ears and yell "Lalalalalala!"

Awwww. Poor public school students. Having to obey "rules" and such. Get used to it, sister! Every employer I have ever worked for has had dress codes and appearance restrictions. And even if they didn't, you can bet money that their clientele would be concerned about "professional image." Do you see me wearing shorts and a T-shirt on Sunday morning, when I'm doing my job? No, you don't. Why? Because my profession, just like 99.44% of every profession out there, has appearance expectations. Do you hear soldiers complain about uniform restrictions placed on them? Do you hear businessmen complain that they can't wear jeans on sales calls and in board meetings, and harping about their "rights"?

Frankly, I don't think our founding fathers gave a rip about body piercings or long sleeves when they drafted the Bill of Rights, anyway, so I'm having a hard time understanding how anyone can claim these things as "rights." It just sounds an awful lot like, "Boo Hoo Hoo, my school/parents/workplace doesn't let me do what I want to do!!11One! :(:("

Earlier, you said you were an adult. Not in the eyes of the Law, you're not! Legal voting age, last time I checked, was 18, and legal drinking age was 21. So no, you're not an adult yet. Yes, as a part of your preparation to exist in the real world, you are expected to maintain a certain level of maturity and responsibility. But that still doesn't make you an adult. And part of the responsibility of an adult is learning to live with rules that we may not necessarily like.

or course the founding fathers didn't give a rip about piercings, but that's not the point. the point is that schools are so deep into political correctness that they think a kid with a piercing is going to shoot up school. it's total crap, and what they really want (but aren't saying) is that they want teenagers to look exactly how they want them to look, regardless of youth culture.

Yeah, and guess what: employers are the same way. And so is pretty much the rest of society. Part of growing up is learning to live within the norms of a society.

And don't even attempt to suggest that teenagers themselves aren't that way. I seem to remember a month or two ago, when there were a couple of people who completely disrespected one of our long time forum members. Why? Because he dyed his hair, and just happened to be an anime fan. One of our members even went as far as to tell him to "GTFO!" for no other reason than that he was different. Yeah, that's a prime example of acceptance if I ever saw one. And I've seen it time and again - and maybe some of you have too: there are cliques, and if you don't fit a particular one, you're treated as an outcast. So while teenagers may complain about the "oppression of the system," it seems to me that in general they really aren't much better in the way they handle differences of appearance, culture, etc.

Maybe I was harsh on ChickenLeg; but to me, a standardized school rule about dress and appearance often looks much less restrictive than the expectations the kids themselves place on one another. Just a thought there.

Yeah, I can agree with you on that. Too bad trying to avoid those restrictions by not socializing will only go so far.

And I really needed to get my peeve out, before I decided to wail on the principal or some other major school authority. And last time I checked, that's instant expulsion, regardless of arm strength. So, I had no want to do that, for that and the fact that I don't like hurting people in any way.

I'm wondering if I'm actually angry over it or scared about it. I hate it when people yell about broken rules, so if that really happened to me, I'd likely have all my self-esteem smashed for more than few days. Ironically, it's one of the traits I wish I didn't have.

Anyway, new peeve: This house is too hot! Seriously, I can't stand being in this house in the spring/summer if the house temperature is in the low 80's and beyond. The current record is 92 degrees set a few years ago when my mom had the bright idea to can beans during one of the warmest nights of the year. I don't know how I managed to fall asleep that night! But if I have to spend one more summer in the '80's, I'm likely going to leech off of someone else's house. Or take my sister's window air conditioner that she doesn't need anymore because she doesn't live here.

In any case, it looks like I'll be fanning myself a lot from now on. And stuffing ice packs down my pants.

Peeve #78: Bodybuilding magazines. Thanks to them I feel worthless and unhealthy. Oh, and apparently, in order to gain weight, I need to eat either 1 or 1.5 grams of protein a day. And how is a broke college student supposed to buy enough powder and supplements and crap to get that protein?

FYI: Unless you work out 8-10 hours a day (like, working out is your job), those supplements are a rip-off. A serving of tuna has something like 10-20 grams of protein.

Dude, all that protein isn't going to do you much good if you're not working out 8 hours a day. Of course, 20 grams of protein is better than 20 grams of fat.

I don't think I could stand for ONE June bug on my bed! I can imagine if I was home and there was a June bug on my bed... let alone multiple ones...

Someone mentioned bodybuilding magazines. Dude TBH I can remember seeing those even when I was little and being like... put it this way, unimpressed...

I guess that doesn't help, though, unfortunately... this dude was nattering on to me about how his body is like Mr. Burns's and oohhh no muscles and it's not what a woman wants... PFFFFFFT! But I sure couldn't win THAT argument...

But seriously if they make someone feel worthless and unhealthy I feel like just burning all the freakin things
