Big news today.
The Packers have said that Favre has indicated he will retire.

While I'm very emo about this (I think only John Madden is more upset), I can't feel all bad. I'd rather see him go out the way he did than to see him fade away as a third string QB for the Bengals or something like that.

I suppose we'll see him as an analyst in the booth (or on the sidelines as a coach somewhere) very soon.
Maybe he'll be on ESPN and take Sean Salisbury's place. Why does ESPN hire all of these people to analyze for sports that they weren't even good at? (i.e. Salisbury, Barry Melrose)

Just because they were good players doesn't mean they should be analyzers or reporters. See Emmit Smith.

I think they should put him in the booth with John Madden.

I don't think Madden would be able to handle all that Brett Favre all the time. I think he'd explode from joy.

We always have Frank Caliendo as the backup Madden.

It really kills me that there will never be another Brett Favre game, but like I said, it's better for him to go out on top.

It's going to take some getting used to for me... I haven't seen a Packers team without Favre since I was in 6th grade.

I'm going to miss a lot (like when they show a player on the other team and tell you he was in 3rd grade when Favre stated his first game or when they tell you how many QB's the other team has been through since Favre's consecutive starts streak started ). Oh well. Time to turn the page.

Aaron Rogers, you've got next. 17 more years.

Having to see Aaron Rodgers out there in Favre's place will tear to me pieces. It will take some getting used to, seeing a 12 under center instead of a 4, but that's just the breaks. I'd really like to see Favre win another Super Bowl, but I guess that's not happening. Seeing him go out as successful as he did makes it somewhat easier to see, but...no Brett Favre ever again...*Sobs*

And sorry, Rad, but I don't see Aaron Rodgers lasting 17 years. He'll end up like Ryan Leaf, coaching high school after 4 years of time with the ball in his hands, with little to no success.

He didn't go our on top. His last completion was an interception.

He has had three years to hold that clipboard. And he as been well taught.

Did you not see that Cowboys game last year? Favre goes out and Rogers came in and I got a strange sense of deja vu watching him. He was slinging that ball like a young Brett Favre. I think he is going to be fine once he gets some game experience.

Yes it was, he completed it to the wrong team.

Which makes it not a completion.

Wait...we're not seriously gonna discuss that, are we? Please, please, say no.

True, he did throw an INT, BUT by "on top" I mean, he was playing like the old Favre, a game away from the Super Bowl, 14-4, not a dismal 4-12 of a couple years ago.

I hope you're right. If Hasselbeck is any indication of what Favre backups are capable of, I'd say the Packers might miss the playoffs for a year or two, but then the mid 90's Packers will be back in force. They'll just have to give him some good protection until he gets his feet under him.

In the NFC Title game, the Pack did have some good protection. They were the only team that the Giants didn't register a sack against in the post season.

^ Agreed. I know from experience ( :( )that the Giant's D Line is full of beasts so they were doing awesome.

Anyway Pats resigned Moss, which is brilliant. At this point I don't care if they run the table again I just want another Bowl win.

And they also pulled a bonehead move in letting Roosevelt Colvin go. The Pats linebackers aren't getting any younger.

Don't forget Randall Gay. They screwed up in letting him go, too.

Ugh, their defense is gonna be trash next year. Why aren't they resigning players?

Asante was not going to come back. You're either an idiot or you don't follow the Patriots if you think he was. He made it clear last year he was going to leave for the money.

Randall Gay was good but replaceable. He's just another player, and was certainly not a key part of the D. Rosie Colvin was great but too injury prone to be a guarantee in the defensive system.

Why should the Pats resign their entire defense? They lost the Super Bowl for them. Scott Pioli and the Patriots' office is brilliant. They'll draft well and make plenty of moves. I'm actually fine with them restocking like they are. Maybe I won't be reminded so much of last year's heartbreak.

To me, all you need is Brady and Belichick. Don't forget they won 3 Super Bowls with teams full of no-names. Deion Branch? Ty Law? Lawyer Milloy? All completely replaceable, and they've proven it. Does anyone even remember who was on the '01 team?

I meant over the course of the whole season. There were games when they were less than stellar and only a gunslinger like Favre, a scrambler like Mike Vick, or a mountain like Jared Lorenzen (at least the way he was in college) could do much.

About the Pats: Ace had it right. As long as they have Brady and Mr "I'm a millionaire but I dress like it's laundry day", they'll be just fine. The Pats could lose the rest of their starting lineup and it wouldn't matter. This season, they never substituted anyone; they just reloaded.

Their practice squad would have made the playoffs.

No, it was your O-line that lost the Super Bowl.

No, it was your O-line that lost the Super Bowl.
More specifically it was the Pats' unwillingness to dump the ball off to the backs in 2 or 3 yard passes to keep the Giants' D honest that cost them the game.

You don't have to go for the home run ball on every play.

No it wasn't. If I remember right the Giants scored last. We were not stopping them on D.

Anyway, if you have to think of it that way, then it wasn't the Pats' O-Line that lost, it was the Giant's D-Line that won it.

They didn't have to re-sign their entire defense, but defense has to be a prioriety in the upcoming draft. Bruschi and some of the other players are not getting any younger.

Of course defense is going to be a priority. There's been a lot of talk in Boston about getting linemen, and moving Thomas around.

Also Ellis Hobbs needs to get good or GTFO.

What about Harisson? He's inconsistent and singlehandedly gets constant personal fouls called against the Patriots.

Harrison is great, but I might be biased because he's a cult hero in Boston. He lays out big hits and plays well. Professionally, he tied the record for consecutive playoff games with an interception.
