What's not funny about seeing Snoopy do a 6 hour long rendition of War and Peace with hand puppets?

I dislike how Hart or whatever his name was always tried to put Christian stuff in there. It's like, I'm reading the funny papers, I don't want to read about religion, even if it is Sunday.

seriously, most of the time, it's one of these three things:

1. Excruciatingly terrible pun (panel 1, Wiley's Dictionary, person says "What do you call a company run by bees?"; panel 2, "A BUZZ-ness")

2. Completely incomprehensible joke that was obviously cobbled together in about 4 minutes

3. JESUS JESUS BABY JESUS OH JESUS CHRIST JESUS JESUS JESUS BIBLE JESUS CHRIST I LOVE YOU JESUS CHRIST JESUS CHRIST I LOVE YOU YES I DO PLEASE GOD WILL YOU MELT THE JEWS

...So does the creator of the strip not even know what "B.C." means or something?

Peanuts

However, since my parents canceled their Tribune subscription, I had to read crappy comics, such as:
The Buckets
Beetle Bailey
Everything else in the Sun-Times unless mentioned in above list

I guess I might as well mention what comics my paper (The Plain Dealer... magnificent name) has in its two daily pages.

  • Frazz (approved)
  • Dilbert (very approved, although it is a bit repetitive sometimes)
  • Garfield (eeuuuuuuuuuuuurgh)
  • Zits (hit-or-miss, mostly)
  • Doonesbury (eh)
  • Prickly City (scribble scribble lol demicrats r stoopid)
  • Pearls Before Swine (extremely approved)
  • Rhymes With Orange (ambivalent)
  • Non Sequitur (don't hate it nearly as much as I should)
  • Speed Bump (eh)
  • Bizarro (better than Speed Bump)
  • Real Life Adventures (basically what the title says, and not particularly entertaining either)
  • Family Circus (mommy, it's raining, that means God is crying)
  • Free Range (like The Far Side but poorly executed... at least it replaced Ziggy)
  • Marmaduke (BIG DOG WILL EAT YOUR GRANDMOTHER'S SOUL)
  • Sally Forth (much respect for the writer's other works, but otherwise, no.)
  • Jump Start (ambivalent again)
  • Crankshaft (Crotchety Old Man is Cruel to Others, Bleakness, Shadows)
  • Funky Winkerbean (Bleakness, Shadows, Death, Despair and some lame puns)
  • For Better or for Worse (aaaaaaaaaaaaahhh)
  • Get Fuzzy (so unbelievably approved that it's out of this world! buy it today!)
  • The Born Loser (like Drabble but with exclamation points at the end of every sentence... unspeakably dull nonetheless)
  • Hagar the Horrible (this comic strip is such an abomination upon mankind that it is not even worth considering... moving on)
  • Peanuts (vastly overrated, moving on)
  • Wizard of Id (not quite as bad as, say, Hagar, but it doesn't even begin to approach being good, either)
  • Blondie (more proof that 77 YEARS IS TOO LONG STOP DRAWING THE COMIC STRIP AFTER THE CREATOR DIES IT CAN ONLY GET WORSE (THIS ALSO GOES FOR HAGAR))
  • Beetle Bailey (needs more Iraq)
  • Mary Worth (ALDO ALDO ALDO ALDO ALDO... oh, it's a dog that she takes care of for three months and nothing happens... WACKY)

That makes for a total of 28 (14 tiny little comic strips per page) on weekdays. And three that are consistently worth reading. Which is about an 11 percent grade. Hooray for comic strips.

The worst comics in papers are, without a doubt, The Family Circus and Marmaduke. (Well, at least, those are the worst comics that are popular. I'm sure there are lots of terrible unpopular ones that, mercifully, never make it anywhere.)

The Family Circus: Bland artwork. Tons and tons of lame puns. Children being stupid in a way that isn't even funny. Blecch.

Marmaduke: EVEN WORSE. The artwork is an abomination. Apparently the cartoonist thinks good cartooning is making a bunch of messy lines and splotches. I can draw better and my artwork isn't worth a dime. It often takes me half a minute to figure out what the picture is, especially if it's in black and white. This is to say nothing of the horrible quality of the jokes. Listen, I make tons and tons of (usually deliberately) bad jokes. But if I wrote jokes that bad, I would kill myself. Then I would put gasoline on my corpse and set fire to it, except of course I couldn't because I'd already be dead. But never mind that. The concept behind almost all Marmaduke comics is this:
  1. Get an unfunny idea involving one or more humans.
  2. Change one of the humans to Marmaduke.
  3. Now it's funny!
Only, of course, it isn't.

In summary, I hate Marmaduke. And The Family Circus, but especially Marmaduke.

- Kef

Mallard Fillmore infuriates me in so many ways. I cannot describe in the sanitized atmosphere of this forum what I would like to do in the near future; however, it involves Bruce Tinsley, a wooden dowel, and rubber cement. I will go no further in my description.

Yeah, I pretty much agree with this.

But I still repect Peanuts, if only because it paved the way for pretty much every daily comic strip to come.

Well, I know for a fact that Stephen Pastis and Darby Conley (authors of Pearls Before Swine and Get Fuzzy, respectively) both said Peanuts was a huge influence on them. So that's something, at least. But you're right, it's probably spawned as many terrible strips as it has good ones. Still, Peanuts has its moments.

Also a pretty good comic: Sherman's Lagoon.

You bumped the wrong thread. This is the one we're using now. This thread sucks because Clapper made it.

Also because of the ridiculous amount of disrespect Peanuts got here. WTF guys.
