The only thing I could understand there was "I'll just comment out these lines". And that's because I thought he was writing a paper or something at first.

The *main* problem with xkcd is that a lot of it is really intended for people with a deep understanding about what he talks about, which is mostly adults who have a BS in CS, and everyone who reads it who doesn't doesn't know what the heck he's talking about and just writes it off. It's really quite clever, it just requires knowing what he's talking about.

It's kinda like showing your Penny Arcade, etc to your grandmother and her not getting it either.

As far as I can tell, the reasoning behind all you people's dislike of xkcd is the following:

1. Sometimes I don't get some of the jokes in it.
2. Therefore, it is a terrible webcomic.

This is stupid.

It seemed pretty clear that was your opinion to me. Have you changed your mind, or have I misunderstood your position or something?

Based on your logic, The Aristocrats Joke should go like this:

Quote:
So a family goes into a Talent Agency.
"The Aristocrats!"

To be fair, I like those ones better too, but I also have to say I think Randall does more of those than he does stuff about science and computery crap. And plus, when he does them, more and more frequently I think the punchline doesn't come as much from the science stuff as it used to. I mean, the one above is sort of a good example. Not the greastest one, but still. The silliness of any computer's security being cracked by security rings or stern talkings-to amuses me.

I find XKCD to be pandering. Basically it reads like CAD for college students majoring in areas of study that emphasize math/science.

Also when he writes comics about his girlfriend I immediately lose interest and think "I really don't care"

So? That's not ALL he does. It's not like he's some sort of one-trick pony. Honestly, you just come across as being ticked because he's not pandering to YOU.

He also hasn't done that thread so much anymore, which I like, and those that do happen are less emo and vague than earlier. Overall, he's doing better at covering the bases than he did back when xkcd was just his personal sketchdump site.

Also, to this whole discussion:

I enjoy his comics when people can understand them, or they're just funny.

I don't like them when you need a large background in computer programming, a college degree in mathematics, or deep deep love for a girl who is as nerdy as you to understand. I think I once posted a comic and asked you guys "why is this funny?", and Racerx gave me the answer "study it in college". =/

I also find a lot of his comics on internet culture, such as "memes", "fads", "rules", etc, to just be really unfunny.

Sorry, I just don't like it. It's not funny.

See, here are some examples:

Not math/science/computer-related in any way - just really funny.

I don't get the math at all, but I find this a hilariously cruel prank to pull. And who can't identify with that?

Eh, I didn't really like Fanboys after the art change. It just seemed a little too... Anime-ish for those characters.
And as for the forum...

The only four webcomics I've read all the way through are:

Sore Thumbs (I can't believe no one's posted this yet.)
Ctrl+Alt+Del (yes. I like it. No more.)
RPG World Comic (I can't believe he never finished this, it was awesome)
College Roomies From Hell (also very good)

UPDATED

*= could large amounts of swears, suggestives themes, and what-have-you
-------------------------------------------

Schlock Mercenary(Miltary sci-fi epic with a dash of humor for good measure)
Irregular Webcomic (Legos! Also occasional math humor I don't understand!)
Rice Boy (surreal and just generally awesome. it's over now though)
Order of the Stick and Erfworld (used to be just lame RPG humor, but they're branched out recently)
8-Bit Theater*(the world's only decent sprite comic)
PvP (I guess it's supposed to be a gaming comic, but it covers pretty much everything BUT gaming)
Starslip Crisis(sci-fi. Kris Straub is awesome)
Dr. McNinja (needs no introduction)
The Comics Curmudgeon* (not a comic per se, but a great commentary site)
The Superest (two artists try to constantly one-up each other by drawing superheroes that counter each other's powers. Not really a comic but still funny)
Evil Inc. (wacky supervillain antics, great art, and an actual story. Now in GLORIOUS COLOR-O-VISION)
Good Ship Chronicles (a funny and occasionally depressing comic about a reality show in the future)
Thinkin' Lincoln(THINKIN' FRIKKIN' LINCOLN)
Beaver and Steve (manages to be wacky without crossing over into LOLOLO RANDUM territory, which is a rare feat)
Rob And Elliot (the whole "wacky roomates" thing is cliched, but R&E pulls it off pretty well)
Achewood* (excellent writing, but tends to rely on shock value sometimes, which is lame.)
The Slumbering Lungfish* (not just a webcomic, this site has Lore Sjoberg's excellent blog and humor column.)
The Book of Ratings* (also by Lore, but it's not updated anymore)

Wow, this is weird. It's called Pear-Pear, and I'm not quite sure what to think of it. I feel like there's significantly more hidden under the surface here, but I'm never really able to get a good grip on it...

It's like, I can get about half of what they're trying to say. I know they all hate the apple, because he only ever says the same thing. But like... the rest of it? Yeah...

Oh, you guys. I get nearly all of these.

There are a few that leave me baffled, especially near the beginning of the archives, but most of these come across just fine to me.

Also, this one is definitely my favorite.

Well, the thing about it is, unlike most of the "LOL RANDUM" comics out there, this one seems to have some deeper meaning, though I'm not exactly sure what...

the whole thing just feels like a parody of artsy comics in general.
