Hey, hey!

Thanks to Rusty, I have come across K7.net, which allows you to have a free phone number and answering machine set up*. This means that you can all call into a wonderful answering machine to leave me messages which I will upload to here at one point or another!

InterruptorJones once set up a system similar to this for users to send in their voicemail on the now-defunct "Tell What U Think" Day.

However, before I give you all the number and send you on your merry way, I want to you know several things that are fairly important (underlined things give you the main idea):

  • *While this is free for me to set up, it is not free to those of us who decide to call the number. I don't think there are any hidden charges, but you will probably have to pay a long distance fee that will obviously go up with the amount of time you spend talking to this thing. As a reference, this answering machine is based out of Seattle, Washington.
  • Because the messages and faxes you send to me will be sent to my email account, I will be able to see your phone numbers. I promise to you all that I will not use your phone numbers for anything. There are some ways to block caller ID from showing up ("Curses!" cries Disk), though I don't have solid knowledge of any of the methods.
  • Your messages are allowed to be up to five minutes in length.
  • If you are of the younger variety, like below the age of 13 or something, you may want to have parental supervision when calling this thing. I honestly don't care, but I don't want your parents wondering why you're calling some dude with the name "DS_Kid".
  • I may upgrade this answering machine in the future to be toll-free to you all. I don't have the money at the moment to do it, though.
  • At least one call must be made every 30 days. If a call isn't made in that time frame, then the number will be deactivated.

Now that that's clear, I will provide you with the phone number:
(206) 666-4261

Make sure to dial it correctly, or else you may call some random person who I don't want to hear about. EDIT: You may or may not have to dial a "1" in front of the phone number. I was fine without using the "1" (and the number is across the United States from where I am), though Einoo appeared to experience an issue without using it.

A few more interesting things that aren't as important (underlined things give you the main idea):
  • Feel free to say anything to the answering machine, though try to make it Forum-appropriate. Any messages containing naughty words will have a notification by them.
  • While you don't have to, it'd be nice if you mentioned who you are (user-wise) in the message.
  • I will try to change the voicemail on a fairly regular basis. One that I want to accomplish using is the Mentos answering machine parody from the Perfect Kirby series, but it appears to be a few seconds too long.
  • I will upload the messages (or faxes, if you're weird like that) to this place on a relatively regular basis. I'm still determining what would be the best way to upload these. I was thinking of SplashCast, the website that IJ used to present his messages, though I'm not familiar with the program. Despite my issues in the past with them, I may just use Putfile

If you have any questions or suggestions for this thing, then please be sure to tell me!

Now go ahead and call!

Oh, this thing looks really cool. I'll call it when I get a chance. And I just gotta admire your dedication to multiple forum projects, Disk. But if you don't pay any money, what does this mean?

If I start being charged a "significant" amount of money for changing the settings and such for this number, I'm going to probably have to pull the plug on this thing.

So if you leave it there and don't touch anything, it's free, or what?

Well, I have not told my parents about this project, and since I have to call the number to change settings to the account, it could raise the bills a tiny bit. I wouldn't say too much, so it's probably nothing major. Heck, if I get a bit more money, I may actually just upgrade to the other service Rusty told me about that would be toll-free to you all.

Oh, okay. That's good, then. Just as long as it's not like five bucks a call to change settings. (Get a cell phone :p )

My knowledge of phone technologies is quite low. Okay, then it's killing cell phone minutes, then. :P

Eh, I'll just completely edit that part out.

I just noticed that the answering machine message was pretty low in volume since I recorded it at 3 AM. It's just Microsoft Sam saying, "Hello HR Wiki Forum. This is DS_Kid's suave and sexy computer telling you to leave a message." Or something...

Okay, so two possible calls later today. I was expecting more activity from this Forum on the weekend. :P

Whenever I call the number, I get something completely different. I'm thinking the area code isn't working, because it takes me to something related to a local college.

So yeah. I can't leave a message.

Sorry.

Hmm...can somebody else tell me sometime soon if this is working for them or not? I just tried calling it and doing a test message, and it worked fine. In fact, it was sent to my email address about two seconds after I hung up.

I just left a message, so yes, it works. Try dialing "1" before the number, Einoo.

The new message is kind of an earsore through the phone, but I just had to do it...

EDIT: Messages are now available in the first post.

I'm done calling this phone number for the day, since I've probably called it ten or so times to change around settings. Feel free to continue sending in messages, though. This is pretty neat.

can you host the audio files on a service where you don't have to download them?
Like, embed them on some kind of html file, or maybe put it on ripway?

Author:  DS_Kid [ Sat May 17, 2008 10:46 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: Disk's Answering Machine of *Briiing Briiing*-ness

Maybe in the future. I don't know of any hosting sites that stream audio efficiently (Ripway doesn't have that much storage space, and Putfile just sucks).

Until then, what is the issue with downloading these relatively small files?
