My Grandma just won't leave me alone about this. Everytime this forum is mentioned in the smallest degree she goes on and on about people who arrange to meet other users in real life just to kill them or something.

I know there are dangers involved with talking to people online, but isn't there just as much danger when walking down the street or writing to a pen pal?

What are your thoughts on this subject?

It's fine to talk to people, and say your state and such, but, you aren't going to be killed by someone if you aren't acting stupid. I mean, the only way they will know your address is if you're stupid enough to post it online.

And no, sorry, I wouldn't meet any of y'all in real life. Unless, you were like, my uncle's, uncle's, uncle's, uncle's, uncle's, uncle's.... aunt. Or uncle. :p

Or their Phone number.

But yeah. I don't really. I couldn't think of anything to say.

I wouldn't either, it's much better meeting them online so that nothing is awkward.

Besides the fact I already know a user outside the forum, I would like to meet some of the other forumers.

As an adult male I'm not really very much at risk from online stalker-types (in fact, with the likes of SC and QC around here, I think I'm more at risk of becoming such), and I think it'd be cool to meet some of my fellow oldbies. I probably wouldn't want to meet the younger folks not because I don't like y'all but because it's not hard to imagine an overzealous parent or grandma getting the wrong idea and having me arrested or otherwise trounced.

If I ever met IJ in real life I'd probably tell him what I think and then kick him in the knee caps. Oh yeah, knee caps

Yeah, I can understand how someone like Ninti shouldn't meet anyone and strongly recomend that she doesn't meet anyone, but as of my last birthday, I'm old enough to get my self a bachelor pad.

No.

There are a couple people already know in the real world, but I have never and will never go out of my way to meet someone I met online.

I've met people IRL that I met initially online...and stuff has turned out all right. I understand caution, but for parents (or grandparents, etc.) to believe that absolutely everyone other than their own child that uses the Internet is a stalking axe murderer is just retarded. I mean think about it: How many friends do you know IRL that you know use the Internet? And of those, how many lie about who they are online to convince others to meet them IRL so they can hurt them? For most people, I'm betting the number is 0...MAYBE 1 or 2, if you hang with strange people (but then, who isn't strange in some shape or form?) like that....but for most of us, it's gonna be 0. So statistically, from that point of view, the Internet is filled with harmless people.

Dude...do you realize how old that person would be?

I don't feel like I'd be at risk meeting anybody, but I don't actually see myself doing it. As IJ said, I would really only be interested in meeting other oldbies (nice word, IJ), and there aren't really many oldbies located near where I live/ I don't do a lot of travelling. And to a degree, I would feel a little silly saying to the wife "I'm going to meet some person that is a member on that forum about homestar runner." I don't know why, I just think I would.

I have met people in real life that I only knew through the internet though, a couple of times, though. Back in my early (single) days at college, my roommate was friends with a girl at a different university. They would IM a fair amount, and eventually her and I IMed a little bit too. Then her roommate and I started IMing and so on so on and eventually we met. The funnier story is once back in the old days of Napster, my other roommate and I were downloading some songs from a small local band. We thought it was pretty cool that this user had a bunch of this band's songs as they aren't very well known. So we messaged the user through Napster, talked for a minute, and discovered she lived in a dorm across campus. We both went over and introduced ourselves to her and her roommates a few minutes later. It turned out she was friends with my little brother (just 2 years younger). Small world.

When I learn to drive, I am so driving to wherever you live. Teff too. Then we can like, party and stuff.

Of course, that there's 3 years away.

I don't live near anyone...looking at the Frappr map somebody set up, I can see that the count of users near me (that I'm familiar with) is...1.

I think it's high time for a road trip. It would be pretty l33t to meet some of you lot...

Wayyyy back in the day (before the advent of leching) I met DeeDee. That was a little awkward, to be honest. We hung out and played Tetris and then went for some burritos, but we didn't really "click." I think at the time we were both a little desperate for a little some human contact and we hadn't spent enough time talking online to establish a rapport. On the other hand, some of the other people around here I've spent enough time talking to that I think meeting might be a little awkward at first but after awhile we'd be able to get into a groove. But that's really the sort of thing you can't predict. Sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn't.

I have two older friends, Deb and Dave, who met online and after talking for years Deb moved from Florida to California to live with Dave. They've been married for five years or so. I also have a friend who moved from Indonesia to Canada to live with a man guy she met online. They've been married for a year. Of course, those are special cases 'cause we're talking about love and not just friendship, but it does show that you can create strong relationships online that can carry over into meatspace.

I still intend someday to show up on MHG's doorstep demanding poutine.

I wouldn't make plans to meet somebody, but if an HRWiki-meetup ever happened, I'd try my best to go.

I might consider meeting a few select people from here (TEF, some other people that are sadly no longer on here), but otherwise no. I've always found that the barrier between an actual relationship and an online relationship tears me to shreds.

Like, I can't think of ANYTHING to say or how to react, since I used to have emoticons to convey emotions to the person. Though I am curious what response I'd get if I said "I DISAGREE! GREATER THAN COLON BEGIN PARENTHESIS!!!"

I will, someday... I actually mailed JoeyDay a Knoppix CD one time. Funny story about that. Something from me has been in the same mailbox something from TBC has been in.

You could always use, oh I don't know, actual facial expressions and body language. You know, like real people do.

I'm like most people on here: I wouldn't necessarily activly seek out contact with anybody, but if we had, like, a convention or something, I'd see if I could go. Also, if I accidentally met up with anybody (though it looks like the only person that could happen with is Einoo, and possibly topofsm if conditions were juuust right), I'd say "hi" and stuff.

I might get to see BazookaJoe some time (which would be cool)... my high school once played his brother's team (his school) in track, but I didn't then. Homestarman17 lives the nearest to me, and he goes to my school's rival, but I doubt I would ever see him (he isn't very active here anymore). I also just about got to see Rourke once, since we were at the same cross country meet at the same place at the same time, but I never even looked for him or anything then. So yeah. I know at least one person who knows BJ and probably a few people who know homestarman17 (he goes to my cousin's school).

I could meet IanTheGecko if I wanted to. But I think my parents would have a hard time driving me to some guy I met on the internet's house. But if there was a concert or something, you know...I don't know. What?

Of course, I would totally love to meet someone from here. Anyone, pretty much. Anyone except a certain... person...

In fact, I actually came really really really close to meeting someone from the Forum a while ago (though I didn't get to KNOW them through the Forum, they ARE a member here) and we had it planned out and everything, but we had a little trouble on both ends.

If anyone felt like coming to visit me, though, they could. I've basically revealed everything about me that there is to reveal here: my full name, my street address, my picture, my voice, and my phone number. I've received letters, voice mails, had phone conversations... I like getting to know you people. I love you just as much as any of my real-life friends, so why not expand the relationship a bit?

Pick me up on the way, will ya? I don't really feel like learning to drive. Cars are annoying. I'd rather be annoyed in public transportation than annoy people trying to ride their bikes in a so called quiet neighborhood. Maybe someday we can have a Boston meet, where us New Englanders and upper Central Antlanticers can have a meet. Any ideas of wacky antics, Ace or breadtangl? I'm thinkin' the MOS, but that's because I'm a nerd. :p

I have met people from LOLZTHAINTERNETZ in the past and have had an enjoyable time, so I don't see why not. In fact, our very own Jenny plans on making a trip to visit me this summer (we shall drink suudsu and draw! And... vegetate...).

She'll be the ninth online friend I've met ^^
