Oh yeah. You say you listen to metal, and people think you listen to emo/screamo bands (ew).
Yeah, I guess metal has always over-excited onlookers, but c'mon, I like thrash metal the most.
Maybe I'm just trying to say metal is taking to much flaming whereas most popular music like rap/ hip-hop is being ignored.

You're absolutely right. I think the main reason is that the sound takes getting used to, and the stuff that is most popular is really not very artistic at all, leading outsiders to judge the entire subgenre by that stuff alone.

Rap is only really getting ignored because it's what's "cool" these days. Before it was so in style, it was actually much better and somewhat jazzy, so it didn't get much crap. However, after it falls out of the limelight, I think rap fans will get as much crap as metal fans do right now.

People listen to metal when they are upset? What a great topic to write about. Here are some others!

Heavy metal 'a comfort for the black child'
Heavy metal 'a comfort for the agnostic child'
Heavy metal 'a comfort for the male child'
Heavy metal 'a comfort for the Greek child'
Heavy metal 'a comfort for the retarded child'

At first I was like "oh cool metal people are smart" but then I saw that the smart people listened to those bands and I was like "raaaage".

Go on Last.fm.
Use that radio thing to look at bands similar to Dragonforce.
All the band names just scream "I play D&D"

Most power metal is like that. The only power metal bands I like are Iced Earth, Children of Bodom, and Nevermore.

Know of any good instrumental power metal bands?

I think there's nothing wrong or stupid about liking Dragonforce. It's only a bad thing when you take them seriously. If I ever hear "HERMAN LI IS THE BEST GUITARIST EVER" again I will smack that person across the face. For what they are, humorously obnoxious, they're fine. But when it comes to playing musically, they're miles behind the pack, even in the world of metal. Slipknot... yeah, they have no reason to exist.

Yeah, I don't think that even exists. Power metal is pretty much all about the cheesy vocals, anyway.

I don't listen to much normal metal, but I like some progressive stuff: Dream Theater (and LTE), Isis, Buckethead's many projects, Cynic, that kind of thing.

also: Mick Barr is insane. I don't really care for his stuff, too chaotic and atonal for my tastes, but he's worth watching at least once just to see how crazy fast he plays. Look him up on youtube or something.

Alestorm is considered power metal.
Also, have you ever seen DragonForce live footage? They're so quick... it's a shame they're so sloppy.
Even on their recordings, they use no knowledge of technique or theory. Just play super quick and memorize it.
Sheesh, there's quicker guitarists than Herman Li and Sam Whatevz. I don't see why people rave about them so much.

They rave about it because they use Staccato notes on their neck pickups that make them sound like old NES music.

I've already figured out the Dragonforce recording technique, and its quite ingenious. Simply Tune down a few steps, play whatever mish mash you are going to play moderately, and then speed it up in Pro Tools or Audacity.

SIMPLE!

Actually they don't have to tune down. There's technology to speed things up without increasing frequency. And actually that's exactly what they do, I've heard. They can't play their own music cleanly enough to record, so they do that instead.

Theory, not really, but they still need to use really good technique to play that fast. And they do. Even though it's often an unconventional style.

Because they flaunt their skills more than most other guitarists in their songs. Plus, artistic metal doesn't sell very well. Yngwie Malmsteen, for example, is faster AND more artistic than both of them but he doesn't see as much mainstream popularity as them.

"I WANT MORE WENCHES
MORE WENCHES AND MEAD
I WANT MORE WENCHES
LOTS OF WENCHES IS WHAT I NEED
WHEN I COME BACK FROM A MIGHTY QUEST
I HAVE NO NEED FOR SLEEP OR REST
I HEAD TO A TAVERN FOR A DRINK
AND GET SO DRUNK A CANNOT THINK"
is also pretty ridiculous, but c'mon. Pirates weren't meant to write poetic things.

He's a good guitarist, but he's just a pretentious piece of crap.

Well, considering all he displays himself as is a good guitarist, is that really pretentious?

Also that version is so much better than the studio version, which I always found kind of lifeless.

Well they're not typical power metal. They're actually kind of hard to classify but I always call them power metal with harsh vocals.

Also, I've had In Flames' album, Colony, on repeat for a couple days now. I highly recommend it to any fan of melodeath.

I can't tell if this is metal or not.

Listen at least until the vocals come in.
