Devin Townsend is musician who plays numerous styles of music, usually rooted in metal. He is, in my opinion, one of the best songwriters around today and has a great sense of humor which shows in most of his work. He's had a couple bands and projects but most of them have been 100% led by him.

Since you dislike punk, check out Cooked On Phonics. It's a comedic concept album like Ziltoid about a metal band that goes pop-punk to make money and the lyrics make fun of punk and all its subgenres.
