I'm playing Paper Mario 2 for Gamecube, as well as replaying the orignal Paper Mario for N64! I know people say these games are stupid, but they're really actually awesome RPGs and are pretty tough, too! Go and rent them or something if you feel up to it!

NFS underground is a pretty decent game, Midnight Club 2 racing is alright also (I own both for the PC). I just wish EA would make a sequel to Porsche Unleased, *sigh*.

Also playing Sam and Max Hit the Road, Day of the Tentacle, Might and Magic IV, Morrowind and Beyond Divinity. If you want any free time, I've got plenty to spare!

My girlfriend is addicted to the original Paper Mario. She's been playing it for a couple months, mostly on weekends, on my Xbox. (Yes, Paper Mario is an N64 game. Yes, I really have it on my Xbox. I'll leave it to you to put two and two together.) I haven't played, but mostly because having watched her play through most of it kind of ruined the story for me. But I have been working on Mario & Luigi's Superstar Saga (a GBA game, also on my Xbox), which is very similar to Paper Mario.

She wants me to get a Gamecube so she can play Paper Mario 2 and Mario Party 6 (and sadly there's no way my Xbox is going to run Gamecube games any time soon), but she's gonna have to buy that one herself.

Though a question can be raised here: Are the Paper Mario games really RPGs (As in, games where you really roleplay, where your character's dialoge and actions can change the play of the game, multiple solutions to quests etc) or just turn-based strategy games like the recent Final Fantasies?

Controversial'D!!! There's no actually rule that says RPGs have
to be like that, it's just the general idea of them. So yes, I consider it an RPG.

Well, I base the term RPG on the traditional Pen and Paper style, y'know like D&D, Call of Cthulu and such. Paper Mario doesn't let you directly interact within the world does it? Do people have daily schedules? Do your choices throughout the game affect the ending and the way characters repsond throughout? Can you even choose dialouge options that acutally matter? Those are things i expect in an RPG, not just turn-based combat and the ability to "customize" your character. Which is why I personalyl don't think that Paper Mario is a "true" RPG, much like Deus Ex isn't a "true" shooter. Like I've said before, this isn't a knock against Paper Mario or anything, just being critical of it's classification and the contrived label of RPG.

As you can tell, I'm pretty passionate about this stuff

I think you're just being pedantic, not passionate. Sure, in Paper Mario, you don't get to choose what character you play, but people don't buy a game called Paper Mario so they can play as Xarthon the Meekslayer.

Nobody's asking you to call the game an RPG, or even talk about the game in the first place, but faulting others for calling it such when it can't be shoehorned into your "passionate" (read: narrow) set of criteria serves nobody.

I'm not being critical. I never said the game itself was bad, I didn't even say the poster was wrong or said he was at fault. I was stating my viewpoint and raising a discussion. Though I can see how you could get that from something I wrote:
i was just wondering seeing as how I come from a very oldschool Pen and Paper roleplaying background and it irks me to throw around the term RPG on things that really aren't.
Rereading it, I do get the impression of being critical and snotty but that wasn't the way i meant for it to come off as. I meant to simply start a discussion about the nature of the label "role-playing game".

Sorry about any misconception.

P.S. Xarthon the Meekslayer can now be crowned the coolest name ever.

Mr. Naked, I think that you need to re-think the definition of an RPG. Heck, even your misconception of a Role Playing Game matches the game Paper Mario, as your dialogue and actions affect the (2) endings. Your use of items in the turn-based-fighting greatly affects your outcome, and no, Xarthon the Meekslayer is not the coolest name, as "Gretchen" is.

Ah, but how is my defintion of an RPG a "misconception"? While it may be a teensy bit overly critical (I've already admitted this) it's what I believe a "true" RPG is. Other people may have different views on what exactly an "RPG" is but for me it's the items i listed above. Paper Mario for the N64 was one of my favorite games and still is, but I see it as an RPG-lite or turn-based strategy game. I guess the main point of my anger and such is the labeling of anything with expandable stats as an "RPG" because, hell by that definition Daikanta could be an RPG! Can you not also use items that affect the outcome of the battle during the turn-based combat in Heroes of Might and Magic? Does that make it an RPG? But I digress, if you believe that Paper Mario is an rpg than so be it. The true nature of the "RPG" is in the eye of the beholder.

What FFXI server are you on? I play too.

Also, are you in a halo 2 clan yet? If not, check out mine at my website.

We also have a Halo Wiki if you're interested in that kinda stuff.

I'm not one for platformers or console games in general, but Jax and Daxter really is a good game I must admit. I've been playing it all friday and have only since returned to Vampire Bloodlines and Beyond Divinity. Thank goodness for a 3-day weekend.

Currently, I'm on the Wiki forum, so I can't be playing anything at the moment

No seriously, I am playing a lot of NES games on an emulator. I actually own the games that I download, but part of being a college freshman is having to live in a cramped dorm room, so I can't bring my NES collection (I have about 65 games for it, not to mention 3 controllers, a zapper, and a power pad). Anyway, the games that I am playing right now are:
    Startropics(NES)
    Startropics 2(NES)
    The Legend of Zelda(NES)
    Zelda 2:The Adventures of Link(NES)
    Final Fantasy(NES)
Final Fantasy I & II Dawn of Souls(GBA)
The Zelda Oracle Series(GBC on GBA)

That's all I can think of right now.
