What would you think if I told you that there was an asteroid in space with a 1 in 300 chance of hitting Earth?
Okay, now, what would I you think if I told you that the same asteroid suddenly had a 1 in 60 chance of hitting us?
Great! Now, what would you think if I told you that the same friggin' asteroid NOW has a 1 in 45 chance of hitting us?

Yeah, in 2029, the world is doomed!

not exactly. there are still ways to divert or destroy an asteroid. Can't think of any right now, but there are ways :p

One word: Missiles. That's what I'm hoping for. If not, space colonialization.

You can use a nuke in space to either smash up the asteroid or push it off course. Or you can attach engines to it and have those push it aside. Or some weird reflective solar sail thing, but that takes forever to have an impact.

I'm just an old timer who lurks on occasion. Even in 2020, at least.

Whoa, some one's been watching the sci-fi channel way too much. :p
True though, by 2029 who knows what types of crazy crap we could have to destroy that asteroid.

Howsabouts we have more data points to better predict the trajectory of the asteroid, by 2015? Seriously, either we'll have a better idea of the path, and find it's going to miss us by several lunar distances, or we'll have a pretty good method of "coaxing" it to miss us. I don't think this is anything to sweat, cus there's not a lot your average Joe Schmo can really do about it.

Of course, I'm more a meteorologist than an astronomer/astrophysicist, so I'm really not the person to talk to about this.

You're absolutely right. The chance that it'll miss us is at around 98.8%, and that's BEFORE we have more definite information. I really just thought that it was interesting that the Earth could be destroyed before we get the chance to do so ourselves!

If it hit, with the worst possible circumstances (made of iron, hitting land at a very high speed), it would have an effect something like Krakatoa.

Pfft, the day Earth gets hit by an asteroid is the day I die. Wait, that didn't come out right. Nevermind.

I don't believe it. When there's a 1 in 1 chance, that's when I'll get scared. Excuse me if I don't lose any sleep over this.
