Where are you living now, Goblin?
Last Thursday we had an "ice day". There was lots of freezing rain and a flash freeze in the afternoon, so elementary school buses weren't running and they closed the college. The university was open, but I decided to take a day off myself. But don't skip school, kids! Do as I say, not as I do. :p

They NEVER closed schools when I was living in Saskatchewan...seriously, one of our teachers told us that it was techincally against policy - they weren't allowed to close the school ever! He said that if it was really bad, they couldn't FORCE anyone to come to school, but they never closed. I never had a "snow day" until I moved to Tennessee...I was like, "Snow Day? What the crap is that?" :sb:

Ever been West, my friend? ;) Have fun on your snow day! I didn't realize the rest of Canada partook in Snow Days, since we never had them!

I had a lot on snow fall last night (Like, 6 inches, along with the 5 inches the day before) And I still had to go to class. Granted, I only had two classes, but still. It's really hard for me because the college I go to is on top of a hill and everyone lives off campus, since there are no dorms there. So another words, thank goodness I have a Subaru.

In new york it's like:

you get 3 inches..... one hour delay
you get 4 inches....... two hour delay
you get five+ inches, school is closed, or if anything comes unexpected, they close school if it very unexpeted

we get ice days too. tuesday was our first snow day of this season
this season has been unexplainably warm

In February of 2002, when I was a student at USU in Logan UT, USU had its first snow day in almost 100 years when it snowed 2 feet overnight. It takes at least that much snow to close the school, anything less and they don't even delay classes.

My wife had a history teacher that had just moved from Texas, and one day, after it had snowed a whopping 2", he came to class really surprised that classes hadn't been cancelled. The class had a pretty good laugh at his naiveté.

i'm in Maryland. My sister got a two-hour delay, but I got NOTHING.

I should probably mention I'm on winter break now, so I wouldn't have school anyway. And yes, Chapter 5 of Weirdoes in Paradise is coming out, as soon as I type out my rough draft and edit it.

We're still on 6 weeks Christmas holiday (that's the same as what USA has called Summer Holidays, except we have it during our summer). The new school year starts in a fortnight or something.

I love Florida. Instead of Snow Days, we have "Hurricane days" and "storm days". Good times...

Rainer, I live in Darwin, there are no such thing as hot days... its hot everyday (it's 30C plus here everyday for the uneducated). It's wet season here, which means electrical storms and blackouts... yay! Just before Christmas we had a blackout for almost 4 hours. I work at a restaurant and was waiting to start my second shift for the day. So everyone had to turn up and wait for the power to come back on.... if it had been out for another 30mins, it would've been dark and we wouldn't have opened, but NO, it HAD to come back on and everyone was annoyed!

When I went to high school in Adelaide there weren't even such things as hot days. If it was over 35C, the after-school electives were cancelled and you didn't have to wear your blazer!

I live in san diego, and obviously don't get snow, but it doesn't matter to me, because, for the moment, I enjoy going to school.

I guess I should explain it more: they don't close the school or anything. A lot of people just go home because it is hot. It's not like its announced or anything. It isn't the same as snow days, its just something like it, but very different.

EDIT: It also varies from school to school, and whether it is high/secondary school or primary school.

We have a snow day today, and when schools are closed in Cincinnati, that usually means the city is gonna shut down. Or that's what it feels like.

Delays? You mean they start school later? They don't do that here, well in Ontario anyway. And it takes a LOT of snow for them to close school here. In my elementary years, I can remember only about 3 or 4 snow days. It's cool when it does happen, though.

Today all the surrounding high school's had cold days. Meaning that it was too cold to go to school. Except College, they were still open. It was so cold today that when I stepped outside to start my car up, my hair literally froze. (I had just showered like 15 minutes earlier.) It takes an act of God to close my college.

No, it's not really cold unless your nosehairs freeze.

I live in Georgia. Usually the schools shut down when there is snow or even a threat of snow. An inch of snow is enough to shut the whole state down.
However, we've had a really warm winter down here so far, and it usually doesn't snow when it is 70 degrees...

Annoyingly enough, the past month we've had I believe 3 days with over 6" of new-fallen snow. Im' not in school right now so it doesn't affect me, but my sister got one or two days off. The only thing it affects me is that it's quite annoying to drive.
In school, however, we had a bizarre hot day. The air conditioning malfunctioned- it was only about 70°F outside, fairly warm as it was toward the start of school. But the AC was heating up the school pretty bad so it was 85-90 indoors. Ha ha. So we got let out.
I do recall that around 10 years ago we had a day that was colder than -30, at that time I remember it as -50 but have some doubts. School was closed of course since it's dangerous to be exposed in any way, -30 or -50.

Hey man. Good to hear you got a snowday. I had one just last week. Nothing like sleeping in 'til the crack of noon. :)

Anywho, being in southern Ontario I get a lot of snow here, but not as much as the east coast does. In fact, the forcast calls for a snowfall of around 15 cm (6 inches for you imperial types) for tonight and tomorrow morning.

Much w00t!

The air condition story sounds similar to what happened to me. When I came back to college from Christmas break, It was warm, like 72 degrees. Of course, this was earlier this month, and 72 is unusual for January in Georgia. Also, the heat was running in the dorms the whole time, so it was like 75-85 degrees in the dorm. I think that this was the first time I felt hot in January. By the time that the dorms cooled off, we got a cold spell. Couldn't win for losing.
The last "cold day" that we had in Georgia was about three years ago. The temperature dipped to 8 degrees. Eight degrees is an extremely rare event in Georgia, so classes were canceled. Many parents complained that 8 degrees wasn't cold enough to close school, however, school was closed anyways. The day before was a snow day (though we had less than an inch of snow), so it was like a second snow day, even though most of the snow had melted.
