Having been recently informed that orange traffic cones are only called "pylons" here in Canada, I'm interested to know what else I've been mislabelling. Aside from the commonly-known soda/pop, sweater/jumper, hat/toque, etc. does anyone know of any other different, um... names for things?

There's also the classic that elevators in England are called lifts, not elevators. There's others, but I can't remember them.

I'll list the few that I know:
On the left is the American term, and the right has the British term

Truck = Lorry
Two weeks = Fortnight
Trunk = Boot
Gum = Glue
Eraser = Rubber
Math = Maths
Speed Bump = Sleeping Policeman (?)
Dumpster = Skip
Rain Coat = Mac
Diaper = Nappy
Bathing suit = Cozzy
Apartment = Flat
French Fries = Chips
Bathroom = Loo
Crossing Guard = Lollypop Man (?)
Football = Soccer
Baseball = Rounders
Band-aid = Plaster
Naked = Starkers
Bucks (dollars) = Quid (pound)

The question marked ones are ones I'm unsure of, as I just got these from a website--err, no! I knew these!... HUTTAH!

It's funny how our languages developed differently. I wonder how these differences came to be.

Australian English is sort of a mix. I'll underline the more commonly used words of the two for Australia. If they are both underlined, they are both used. English English spelling is standard, but some people use American English spelling.

Truck = Lorry
Two weeks = Fortnight
Trunk = Boot
Gum = Glue
Eraser = Rubber
Math = Maths
Speed Bump = Sleeping Policeman (?) (or Speed Hump)
Dumpster = Skip
Rain Coat = Mac
Diaper = Nappy
Bathing suit = Cozzy
Apartment = Flat
French Fries = Chips
Bathroom = Loo, Toilets, Dunny (toilets are barely ever referred to as bathrooms, bathrooms are called bathrooms)
Crossing Guard = Lollypop Man (or Lollypop Lady)
Football = Soccer (this depends what type of sport. the game with a round ball and two goal nets is Soccer, Australian Rules Football is commonly called Football or Footy (sometimes football means rugby) and American Rules Football is called Gridion or American Football)
Baseball = Rounders
Band-aid = Plaster (plaster means hard stuff the doctor puts on you when you break a bone)
Naked = Starkers
Bucks (dollars) = Quid (pound)

ALSO:
Rubbish instead of trash.

Now aren't we all happy knowing this? Most of this stuff we know what it means anyway, but I underlined the commonly used.

Maybe because there's thousands of miles in between each nation? :mrgreen:
