I have a solar powered flashlight, and it's pretty delicious. We leave it in the window of the laundry room, and just get it when the power goes out. It's even got a little police siren noise button on it! |

Except that you have to buy batteries, eh? |

Eh. Batteries aren't that expensive. Besides, my house has a buttload of batteries in it. |

True, but what are the odds you'll be able to find enough batteries of the correct type in the darK?? A solar one would be great if you were in some sort of prologned power outage and you didn't have any way to go get more batteries (blizzard, flooding, etc come to mind). I still don't go with the solar ones, though. The crank powered ones are better. Use one of those to find the batteries for you normal one.

What about the shake-em-up ones? Are they really that great? |

I've heard people say they love them, but I've never used one. I know the wind-up ones work ok. I keep one of those in the toolbox in my car as a backup for my Mag-Lite. |

![]() Mine has a crank on it, too, just in case the solar power burns out. Those Shake 'em up flashlights look cool, too, but I'd probably end up taking it apart anyway to see how it works. |

I think if the Sun burned out we'd have bigger concerns than flashlights. Rofl |

I've got one of those around somewhere in my basement. It works alrightish, I guess. It's got a funky blue tint to the light for some reason. It's a little bit dimmer than a regular flashlight, but you can still see stuff with it. |

Actually, it's about the only flashlight where at any given moment we know just where it is. As for the other couple hundred battery-run flashlights, well, who knows.

I swear, they are programmed to just vanish after three months, or the first black-out, which ever comes first.

Step three: profit! (just don't ask about step two) The way it's done on Slashdot is 1. Gather flashlights! 2. ??? 3. Profit! I, for one, welcome our new flashlight overlords. BUT DOES THE FLASHLIGHT RUN LINUX? Imagine a Beowulf cluster! *gets modded +5, informative* |

Don't you love it how one brand of batteries will have dozens of varieties. Just look at some Duracell AA batteries. There's the regular, the ultra, the super strength, the industrial strength, ect. I just want some dang batteries that will make my CD player run. |

Someone may or may not have already done this, but I will do it anyway. Splenda Anybody else think that Splenda is an oxy-moron? Just think about it. It's sugar free sugar. That's all I'll say. |

Come on, you guys! You're not putting your hearts into it! Try one like this: Uncle Didy wrote: And what about Kool-Aid? All that dude ever does is wander around causing massive property damage from all the holes he's constantly knocking in walls, just so he can give sugary drinks to some whiney brats that are too uppity to drink tap water and too lazy to get it themselves. I wonder what he does about all those bricks falling inside that pitcher head of his? Well, they better not end up in MY drink.

Come on, they've probably got a bunch of guys they pulled of the street in a back room shakeing the things for like two hours. I bet they pay em' with food stamps too. Alright thats the best I could do. |

ugh. mine had capacitators, but you had to leave it in perfect sun for 5-6 hours for 30 minutes of light. it did have a dynamo handle, but three turns would be about 2 seconds of light. plus, it was stiff, and made a loud "GHRAUGHTHARAUGHARGH!" when you use it. |
