Pretty much everyone in America knows who this guy is by now--he's rated as the #1 top travelling comedian in the country. But I just found something rather interesting that's been circulating the Internet...

While looking him up on the Internet Movie Database, I saw that he was "sometimes credited as Dan Whitney," so after a quick Google search, I came across this video (warning: some language) of the guy behind the voice--Dan Whitney, before he became Larry the Cable Guy. There's also a Wiki page describing this.

It's kinda weird, because I've seen his act (as Larry the Cable Guy) plenty of times, and I can definately see how this is the same guy but from a couple decades earlier...it still is somewhat eerie, though.

There was a lot of intelligence in that routine. I am suprised at that. He should have stuck with it, and not become Larry the Cable Guy.

Wow, I like Dan Whitney a whole lot better than Larry the Cable Guy. I think the most interesting thing is to see just how fabricated Larry the Cable Guy is. I always figured it wasn't 100% authentic, but from the looks of this it's not even 10% authentic. And I bet that most of the people who watch him think that Larry the Cable Guy is a real person who's just like that in real life. I guess that's show business.

He's a tremendous actor. My friend Kyle has worked a couple of his shows and he NEVER breaks character.
As for the whole "why did he pick the Larry the Cable Guy character?" question, I think it's got something to do with going with whatever makes you money. If you're a professional entertainer, you have to do what puts food on the table and Ferraris in the garage. :-)

That video is GREAT PMG. It's funny. He tells the same jokes as he does as Larry, only without the southern accent or the "GIT ER DONE!" thing.

On a side note, I saw someone with a GIT R DONE tattoo the other day... That's just sad..

Yeah, I think he's definitely following the money. Unfortunately for him, he's stuck being Larry the Cable Guy forever. Maybe if he wanted to he could shift his image slowly over the years, but the NASCAR set is a fickle one and he stands a good chance of losing his audience.

Whenever I hear someone say "GIT R DONE" it takes all of my willpower to suppress the violent urge to stab them in the face. I'm sorry, folks, but Larry the Cable Guy saying it stopped being funny two years ago, and it's never been funny when you say it. (Part of this stems from the fact that I used to work at a community college and my office was near the auto/metal shop part of the building, so I was subjected to a constant stream of baseball cap-wearing tobacco-chewing country boys who couldn't say three sentences without tossing in a GIT R DONE. *stab*)

I just sent that video to my friend Jeremy, who's a HUGE Blue Collar fan. Sree, you are absolutely right.

I hate Larry the Cable guy because of his "Git r done" thing. My Academic team's official motto is "Get it done", but people always think we're copying Larry the Cable guy when in fact we're making fun of this crappy other team.

Curse you redneck!

Actually, the Wiki page says he created the character for some radio show where he was supposed to be impersonating a cable guy (I guess sort of like a Roy D. Mercer-type calling thing).

And for all you that dislike Larry's style of humor (or very persona), you might be interested in reading this article/letter (warning: some language and controversial issues) written as a response from comedian/actor David Cross to Larry (or rather, to Dan Whitney) regarding comments made about him in a book written by "Larry the Cable Guy."

Actually, I have some MP3's of that act burned to a disk somewhere.. They were a lot funnier than his stand-up, and, if I remember correctly, I don't recall him saying Git R Done after every sentence. It wasn't really a Roy D Mercer thing, though. He called into the station or they'd call him and he would give his thoughts on current events and the like. I'll try to find them and put them on the web.

That's not very nice! ;)

But, yeah, Larry the Cable Guy's real name is Daniel Whitney, according to Wikipedia. It's always been an obvious schtick, but I still think he is funny, even though I know he's fake.

yeah i don't think my funny is broke or anything but the whole git r done thing really doesn't even make me crack a smile. unless people are making fun of it. but it's too bad he picked up that character because larry is a pain in the butt and a boil on standup comedy.

A lot of people say that, but, I ask, if he's such a boil, why does he pack arenas? I challenge you to answer that in a non-eletist way. Personally, I found git r done funny only for about a month or so. In that month, though, it was hillarious.

Wow, I thought he was a native southerner. He sure can put on quite an act. He was on Jay Leno a while back and I would never have thought he was acting.

It should be noted that not all southerners act like that. Very few do, in fact.. Still, it IS amazing how well he pulls off that act. It's even more amazing that he NEVER seems to break character. Too bad he didn't pick a better character, though.

Ladies and gentlemen, if you are one of the millions of southerners who suffer from creaky head syndrome, it's time to stop all the excuses, and get some:

Kids at my school CONSTANTLY quoted Larry the Cable Guy. It was extremely annoying. For example, you'd be walking down the hallway and somebody would scream "Get 'er done!"

It was annoying as... um... annoying stuff. So next year, when somebody quotes him, I'll just say "Why don't you quote Dan Whitney." Then people will look at me weird and be quiet!

*crosses fingers that it will work*
