I once made a conversion of Thy Dungeonman to the Z-Machine (the Infocom interpreter) as my first interactive fiction project. I sent it to The Brothers Chaps but I got no response.

I'm thinking about touching it up and adding in Thy Dungeonman 2 (which hadn't been made at the time). Would anybody be interested?

Totally cool, man. I would be interested in playing such a game. I love the witty parser.

For more information for some of you non-nerds, check out the WIkiPedia page on Inforcom.

Notice a few Homestar Runner references, don't ya? "The Lurking Horror" and "Shogun" to name a few. See if you can find them all!

One of my assignments for my PLC (Programming Language Concepts) course last sememster was to write a text adventure game in Prolog (which is such a perfect match for adventure games), and I almost wrote a Thy Dungeonman 2 clone. But I decided it would be too easy and I'd want to add more features, so I wrote a game called Trailer Park Adventure. I wonder if I still have that around.

I don't have any experience with Prolog. In fact, I haven't the slightest clue as to what Prolog code looks like. Maybe I should have a look.

I think Inform is the best tool for making adventure games; I'm sure it makes it even easier than Prolog. It can compile to the Z-Machine or to glulx (a new virtual machine made to get around the Z-Machine's restrictions).

I'd probably have to remake the game pretty much from scratch, though. I went through contortions to get the game to behave just like the original (where possible), but many times something I did would have been done a better way, so I just ended up with lots of ugly code. :P That's what always happens with your first experience with a programming language...lots of pointlessly messy code.

Oh, I didn't mean to suggest that Prolog is better for making adventure games that Inform. Prolog is a programming language, not a game building environment, so I imagine Inform beats the pants of it in that category if you don't want to actually program the whole thing yourself.

What I mean that Prolog is good at making adventure games compared to C++, Java, Lisp, ML, etc..

Yeah, I knew that. :) But since I'm an all-around programmer (I know Python, C, C++, Java, and a couple assembly languages, and could fake my way through Smalltalk, Lisp, Perl, etc...) I thought I could give it a look.

I imagine Python wouldn't be half bad for adventure games either, though I don't think I'll really bother since Inform is already available...and pretty freakin' powerful. :)

Well, videletrix should make arcade machines and be a real company.

Really any solid OO language makes it pretty easy to knock off a basic adventure game pretty quickly.

Hmm, makes me want to write some code. Too bad I'm at work.

Yeah... don't try to do that. Once a thread hasn't been posted in for two years, no one really cares about it anymore.

It's not very hard to do. It just takes a little patience and a little critical thinking to learn. (Of course, lots of stuff is like that...)

HippHoppityFrogOfValue, you reviving dead threads is seriously starting to get annoying. Do you think you could give it a rest? Mmm k?
