Do any of you ever associate a particular song or artist with anything? For example, back in the day, I used to listen to DEVO while playing Pikmin, and now whenever I hear those songs or play that game, I think of the other.

Same thing with Metroid Prime and Simon & Garfunkel. I hear any of my old Simon and Garfunkel songs on my iPod and I can't help but think of the game.

Same thing with Myst and Riven with Simon & Garfunkel. The music just seems right for those games, somehow.

How about you? Do you associate any music with any particular activity or game like me?

"1985" always makes me think of Back to the Future cause that's what year the first one was made and because of a parody of it "1955" that's about BTTF.

:p That one song about the Zoot Suit on Quadrophenia by The Who always makes me think of SOCOM II, and I don't know why.

"It's Kickin' In" by TMBG alway makes me think of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I think it's because I had The Spine on the first time I read it, but I don't know why I associate it with that particular song.

Well, "I've Got A Match" reminds me of Phil and Cassidy for some reason...in fact, I'm working on a picture of the two of them with the lyrics in the background. Even some of the more insignificant lines ("Take off that stupid looking hat you wear") remind me of them.

Also, Poodle Hat and Running With Scissors (albums by Weird Al) remind me of a road trip I went on in 2003. Poodle Hat reminds me of the first half, which we spent mostly in Oregon (and Mom and I got REALLY sick), and Running With Scissors, which we bought in Spokane, reminds me of the second part, which we spent in Washington (Spokane, to be exact) and Yellowstone. In particular, I remember going down into my grandparents' basement after getting Running With Scissors, laying down on the carpet, and listening to the CD.

"Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)" by Green Day reminds me of my graduation, because they played it there.

I associate an awful lot of songs with games/activites, because I'm lame like that. In the interest of space, however, I'll keep it down to the major connections I draw.

-The song "Wayward Son", by Kansas, I have always associated with Zelda games. Every time I hear the lyrics, I always imagine Link. I always see him laying down on a bed of leaves, battered, bruised and sleepy, with a sort of guardian-angle figure looking over him, when I hear the chorus:

Quote:
Carry on, my wayward son,
There'll be peace when you are done.
Lay your weary head to rest,
Don't you cry no more.

The song has a very epic, journey-like feel, which may be from whece I get the association. Other songs that make me think of Zelda include "You're My Best Friend" by Queen (see below), which always makes me think of Link and Saria, "Heartbreaker" by Pat Benatar, which I halfway associate with Ruto and halfway with Wind Waker because of a goofy thing I read in a gaming magazine (a filk, you know), and "Son of Man", from the Disney's Tarzan soundtrack, by Phil Collins, and pretty much his entire Brother Bear soundtrack, too. I dunno what it is about Phil Collins and Zelda. It's like peanut butter and chocolate.

-I thought Simon & Garfunkle/Metroid was kinda goofy, but I gotta admit it's pretty bad what song always gets me thinking of Metroid... I'm almost ashamed to admit it, but... "Just A Girl", by No Doubt. Always and without fail. I think it's the opening line that really does it. It reminds me of the ending of the original Metroid:

Quote:
Take this pink ribbon of my eyes,
I'm exposed, and it's no big surprise...

Actually, it was a big surprise. But that's not the point.
Other songs that make me think of Metroid include "Back in Black", by AC/DC (I associate it with the way the series was revived after eight years in limbo), and, of course, "Killer Queen." "She's a killer! / Queeeeeen! / Gunfire and gelatine, / Dynamite with a laser beam!" ...Whaaaat?

-This is sort of obscure, because both the song and the activity are out there, but the song "Free To Go", by the Folk Implosion, makes me think of a character from the book I'm writing. (If you've never heard the song, I suggest you look for it and download it from somewhere. Preferably legal. It's really cool.) It's hard to explain how they're related, but the character leaves home in a sort of painful fashion, but with new experiences to look forward to. The song is similar, about leaving the places you've known before for new things.

The TMBG song "The Statue Got Me High" also reminds me of the book, because it also contains a similarly nefarious statue that tries to devour one of the main characters. I have a feeling, though, that that particular chapter is gonna be one of the ones scrapped in editing...

-Again, obscure, but the song "Falling for the First Time" the the Barenaked Ladies reminds me of the game that I'm making with Game Maker, called Kliktz. To be specific, it reminds me of the story me and my co-everything came up for our personal characters for it, though I couldn't quite tell you why. It just does.

^^ Speaking of Zelda...

The song "Kite" by U2 makes me think of Wind Waker. Its lyrics have a feeling of going on a difficult journey, and have a wind motif as well.

Quote:
Who's to say where the wind will take you
Who's to say what it is will break you
I don't know where the wind will blow
Who's to know when the time has come around
I don't want to see you cry
I know that this is not goodbye

ANYTHING with 1985 in it reminds me of Back to the Future.

And no, not really. No music associations for me.

Quite a lot of songs make me think of Zelda, actually, since it's only like my favorite game series ever. But some of them have more to do with my personal characters than anything that really happens in the games. For the longest time, "Sweetness" and "In The Middle" by Jimmy Eat World were like my theme songs, because they reminded me both a lot of the Zelda fanfic I was writing.

Incidentally, I'm listening to "Just A Girl" right now. "Iii'm just a girl, / What's my destiny? / What I've succumed to is making me numb..."

Since everyone's commenting on 1985, I'll say that it makes me think of... my book, again. One of the main characters' mothers. She only has one kid, so the "two kids in high school" bit doesn't really work, but the one daughter is 16, so it fits...

PWNAGE. no doubt.

I associate "Experimental Film" with the summer of 2005. Ah... Day camp at Camp Wydaca, with the Fabulous Four. The Homestar Runner lover, the cheese girl, The Girl of the Neverending Pimple (I admit responsibility for teaching her how to get rid of it- she was never the same afterward) and, of course, me. And all the awesome trips we all went on... especially the bowling one, on which I took my iPod and listened to the song about 50 times (I counted!) I swear, that song is good luck. And it just brings back all the memories of sweltering hot weather, endless vacation, and some of the very best friends of my life.

Boring: I associate Experimental Film with... Homestar Runner. Golly gee, no one could have predicted that.

Good song, though! "I already know the ending, / It's the part that makes your face implode!"

The guitar solo from "Dazed and Confused" by Led Zeppelin always reminds me of the fight scene from Ryaconning. And "Princes of the Universe" by Queen reminds me of Legend of Zelda.
