What other musicians out there remind you of the inventiveness of TMBG?

I can think of a few, some of which you mightknow, others which you may not.

The Residents esp. "The commmercial album"

Guided By Voices, the early stuff

Ween, of course

Jad Fair

Daniel Johnston

I guess that's it. I am always looking for musical preferences in order to learn more. Give me some bands, people.

TMBW has a Recommendation Grid that might be of some help.

There are a couple of nifty web sites out there that will recommend bands to you based on the one(s) you enter, but I can't find them just now. When I used them, though, they were surprisingly accurate.

Something else on topic that is over on tmbw.net is their Other Bands You Might Like If You Like TMBG page.

Check it out.

Oh, thanks Tom, that was the other page I was looking for. I knew it was about somewhere.

If anybody's curious, the bands that opened for TMBG last Wednesday were Corn Mo and Common Rotation. Both are great bands for TMBG fans. Corn Mo is just one guy in a drum major's outfit with an accordian and a cymbal with no stand that he plays with a drumstick affixed to his shoe. He's really bizarre, but has an incredible voice. Check out the "Busey Boy" MP3 on his site. Common Rotation is an acoustic duo with some really clever lyrics and great harmonies. Really fun to watch. Had it not been for the fact that I had already spent more than $100 on my trip (two tickets, expensive Wisconsin gas, dinner and a t-shirt for my girlfriend) I'd definitely have bought CDs from both. But I did get their autographs -- yay for freebies!

Hmm. Interesting product description for that t-shirt...

Wow, you liked both opening bands? I don't think that's ever happened in any of the shows I've ever went to.

I may be too critical.

I'll check those recommendations out.

Hmm, thinking back on the shows I've been too, it seems to be the case that openers can be somewhat hit-or-miss. I'll admit, Corn Mo's performance was a little abrasive (I just checked out the "Busey Boy" MP3 on his site, and it's a bit more polished and adds a welcome piano to the equation), but at the same time it was really entertaining. Like I said, he has a really powerful voice (though it's not very "pretty", as such) and he's funny on stage. Though I can't say for sure, I think that if I owned one of his CDs, it would be more of a once-in-awhile listen.

I was just wandering around his site and found this. Kinda funny. He was running his own merch booth (he signed my ticket "Keep the magic alive! Love, Corn Mo"), so I guess the guy doesn't really have a crew. During his set, actually, he complained that his accordion was broken (and demonstrated with some narsty buzzing noises), and TMBG's stage manager came out with one of John Linnell's accordians (a very attractive red one), but he refused, remarking that even though his was broken, it was his baby.

By the way, Adam Busch of Common Rotation has apparently made several appearances on that Buffy show. I liked him a lot on stage, he has lots of personality, but I've never seen him on Buffy, since, well, I've never seen Buffy.

To capture the humorous spirit of TMBG, I'd have to recommend Arrogant Worms and Moxy Fruvous.

I've never heard any bands that are quite like TMBG

Nothing. They Might Be Giants are in a class by themselves. (They got detention. :p )

I'm thinking The Fountains of Wayne.

The dB's.

All of you TMBG fans should have at least one dB's album.

Oh, and Soul Coughing.

Too bad Soul Coughing is no more. But I heart Mike Doughty.

I feel like the foo fighters are kind of like tmbg when they're in their more rock-like phase-- tracks like experimental film--

foo fighters can be pretty silly
