Well, the compy was also 7 years old, and running on wndows 98..the first edition. And I needed a new one for my flash work. esides, getting it fixed (Reloading the whole Windows) would have cost a couple hundred, so I went and bought a new one that's $300 after rebates.

Is this real? What situation could there possibly be in which you want your monitor to be upside down?

I guess that it's just cool. Want to try it... but I don't dare too... I'd probably break it...

Just about a month ago, I was innocently using popular search engine Google when I came upon a funny little site. The only description for it was KRON. So I decided to check it out. As soon as I clicked on it a little window came up saying Trojan virus found! Then, all of our firewalls crumbled down and I was flooded by hundreds of pop ups. Instead of quickly deleting the infected file and turning my modem of to stop the flow of viruses, I turned the computer off and ran downstairs to get my
Mom. When we turned the computer back on it was useless. No windows or anything. All we could do was go to the login screen. Eventually, when my Dad came back from South Carolina he did a system restore and we lost all our data but got the computer back up. S-C-A-R-Y!

The worst thing I've ever done to my computer is install Windows on it. :P

Seriously, though, the worst thing I've done to my computer is try to recompile the kernel while I was still a n00b. Linux = broken. That's when I switched from Slackware to Kubuntu.

One day my dad got an Email.

It was a link to a virus that nearly erased all our hard drive.

The End.

Here's some stuff I've done, that was completley idiotic:

1) I was playing an online game on my old computer, which, made my modum (sp) run really loudly. So, to get rid of the noise, I restarted my computer, and I got... THE BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH! When the guy came and checked, he said it was because I the one of the things broke because of how hot the computer got when I played the game.

2) I was innocenlty talking on AIM with a friend, then BAM 3 viruses. Not that bad, I just deleted them.

3) I got spyware saying, "Download our spyware to get of your bloodhound virus!" and the other's are TrojanDownloader files. I assume you know what those do. I still have those on my lappy. WA. (Though I've gotten no Trojans yet)

And, I win, I have a Windows XP Pro on my Dell Latitude Laptop, with high speed wireless internet. MUHAHA! :p

I remember when I was about seven there was this one time I was fishing around the inner workings of the computer programs and settings (as far as a seven year old can get on a computer w/o internet, at least) and I recall coming across this one folder I'd never seen befoe. I clicked on some stuff, and before I know it, this error message pops up that ominous sounding message, with a spiffy little bomb icon next to it. I freaked out, called in my parents, who were positively thrilled at seeng my accomplishment (obviously). Well, my memory of the event stops there, but the compy still works, after ten years of abuse, so I guess I dodn't completely destroy it.

In more recent times, I was excited about something that had just happened, and ran over to the computer to get online. It was asleep, and instead of just tapping the spacebar I hit probably half the keys on the keyboard. So the screen turns on, and I am suddenly faced with a monitor with all the colors inverted! It took the rest of the afternoon, and a few headaches from the cuh-razy color scheme, but we eventually discovered that in my buton mashing, I had by sheer chance hit an obscure four-button keystroke that did the trick. Fun times.

I think my computer had some kind of virus a few weeks ago. We kept getting these impossible to avoid popups telling us to download something. But I think I somehow deleted it.

Yeah, I don't know ANYTHING about computers...

I think it had to be when I was playing Rayman 2 at a friend's house, when suddenly it cut out of the game and it showed the desktop, fully functioning, but on a 90 degree angle.

I got SCARED.

with my compy, it's like that every day. i even have to start the computer, wait for it to freeze and then hold down the power button so it will restart. then the computer works alright. in fact, it happens if it stays on for too long. stupid IBM.

as for the worst thing, i remember i once kicked the computer and it turned off. when i turned it on, the desktop was cleared except for the rubbish bin and My Computer. somehow, i recovered the computer.

One time I got an email that gave me 423,827 viruses. It wasn't long before my compy peed the carpet an... wait, no, that wasn't me.

The worst thing I've ever done to my computer happened because of Linux. See, I had Linux and Windows both installed on the same machine. (That way I could avoid Windows as much as possible, but still use it, for example, when I needed to use a good music composition program not available on Linux.)

Anywho, there came a time when I wanted to transfer a whole bunch of stuff from my Linux drive to my Windows drive. Since Linux didn't give me write privaleges to the Windows drive as a regular user, I had to do this in the console. Bad idea.

I didn't realize at first that I had an 8 GB hard drive image in the directory I was moving. The moving started, but that file was too big for the space left on the Windows partition, so it threw me an error. Not used to doing things in the console, I just pressed up and changed the command to delete the folder... unfortunately, I forgot to put the folder name after the word "desktop..." My entire Windows desktop was delorted. I keep my important files in a folder on the desktop for easy access... everything - including a huge piece I had just finished for Trumpet and Organ, which had taken me HOURS AND HOURS to write - was gone.

After that, I uninstalled Linux, since I had just gotten a few new hardware pieces that aren't supported by it. Linux is a great OS, but trying to access Windows from Linux is a bad idea. One typo and you can erase the entire drive.

I did the stupid 'download something off of an insecure site' deal and it wound up obliterating Windows. The worst part was finding out that my software to reinstall everything was accidentally left behind at my old address. I had no way to get back there, so I had to buy all new stuff which set me back $150.
Stupidity: 1 Me: negative something.

To all you smug Mac users:

Notice that all these problems are due to users being stupid, as admitted by those telling the stories.

I've been using PC for almost 20 years now, and I've never ever ever had a virus or spyware problem, because if you're smart and know how to protect yourself, you're fine.

One time on my old compy I went onto a website with about a thousand popups, and before I closed them I searched "How to get rid of pop-ups" on some old-school search engine. Now this search engine opened every result in a new window instead of in a list . I pressed ctrl alt del, and nothing came up, except a tiny icon in the bottom right corner of the screen. So I pressed it again and again, and finally they loaded. ALL AT ONCE. Ka-boom.

Remember, I was about 6.

Another time I had a guy from school over, and being a nerd, I wanted to show him some funny webtoon. While the PC was loading, I went to get something to eat, and while I was away he held down the 'Calculater' button on the keyboard, opening up about 100 calculater programs. Ka-boom.

I've used Windows, Macintosh, and Linux operating systems, and not a one of them is without bugs. Of the three, I must say that Macintosh is my least favorite. It's mostly just personal opinion on that, but I'm not so fond of the UI on a Mac. I must also say that Windows is the most likely to cause you problems with the least effort, but it's also the most user friendly, and the easiest to operate, IMO - not to mention having the largest software market, which means more and better programs available. Linux is the most secure of the three, and you're not likely to run into many viruses there. Unfortunately, this security is one of the things that makes Linux so difficult to use, as well as the limited compatibility of the OS.

Point being, no one really has any grounds for bashing any other operating system than the one they use. The best operating system really depends on what you're looking for, and that's all there is to it.

For ease of use and a wide selection of software at the loss of security, go with Windows. For security at the loss of software and hardware compatibility and some amount of usability, go with Linux. I suppose Macintosh is somewhere in between, though, admittantly, I haven't had quite as much experience with a mac.

That's my two cents. Now, I hear they're selling some toastpaint at a nearby kiosk, so Ima head over there and grab some.

Ok, my mom's seriously managed to screw up our computer by fiddling with our network settings and installing some freakish networking program. Now we can't get Explorer to run at all. I did managed to get into Safe Mood and uninstall that horrid little piece of software, but it's still trying to network, and I don't know how to undo that. So it looks like Mom's gonna have to get into safe mode and fix whatever it was she did again.

We installed Windows ME onto our old computer. It worked well for about six months before it began to roll over and die. Two years later, we have a shiny new mac. :p

You also have to understand that this thread is asking what the worst thing is that you've DONE to you computer, not what the worst thing is that has HAPPENED to your computer. The worst thing that has happened to my computer was that the master boot record caught a glitch that screwed up the whole hard drive. It was unsalvagable and had to be replaced. (This was back in Windows 95 times.)

Just don't delete your Windows desktop.

Some programs I found extremely useful/awesomely kool:

1. Firefox (Duh!) if it didn't come with your distro.
2. You might try Wine, which will enable you to run many windows programs under Linux - though it's really hard to configure, at least in Kubuntu.
3. I'd reccomend XScreenSaver if your distro didn't include it, though I think most do.
4. If/when you have XScreenSaver, definitely get the Really Slick Screensavers. I know screensavers aren't at all important, but just sitting and watching these was one of my favorite passtimes in linux...

I know there are some other important things that aren't typically included in Linux, but I guess you'll just have to find them yourself, cuz I can't remember them. If you have any questions on how to work the Lin-box, shoot me a PM and I'll help you out.
