When yo're typing something on MS Works Word Processor...

Ctrl+B = make bold
Ctrl+I = make italics
Ctrl+U = make underlined

That way you don't have to move your mouse aaaaaallll the way up to those little buttons...

My favorite Word-specific shortcut is Shift+F7: Thesaurus.

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned what I believe are the two truly indispensible keyboard shortcuts, Ctrl+C (Copy), Ctrl+V (Paste), and their also important cousin Ctrl+X (Cut).

Ctrl+C (or sometimes Ctrl+X) also pulls double duty when running certain console-mode programs, when a process needs to be killed.

Ctrl+T (new Tab) is indespensible in Firefox. I also use Ctrl+L (highlights the Address bar) and Ctrl+R (Reload) quite frequently.

There's also Ctrl+S (Save -- use early and use often) and Ctrl+F (Find).

Ctrl+A (select All is very handy).

Hmm, can you tell that I don't use the mouse very much?

Start->Run->cmd is the best keyboard shortcut ever. You'd be surprised how much more quickly I can get things like copying files, sending files via ftp to my server, etc., can be done on the command line.

Um. That's not a keyboard shortcut. The closest you could come to a shortcut for that (without some tweaking) would be Win+R (to open the Run box) and then typing in 'cmd' followed by Enter. Not very short at all.

But everything you can do with it is a nice keyboard shortcut to the GUI. ;)

Example: I occasionally hack away at the Quake 2 utilities to produce interesting map effects. Typing
Code:
copy qrad3.exe e:\quake2\testing\maps
is much faster than finding the file (e:\quake2\src\utils3\bsp\qrad3\release\qrad3.exe), ctrl-c, find the folder, ctrl-v.

Middle click on links to open them in a new tab. This has become second nature to me, to the extent that I get really annoyed if I have to use a comp without a scroll wheel and/or Firefox. Like I am rightnow. grr...

in windows: right clicking on a window in the taskbar and clicking close. or double right click it. better than restoring the whole window and dragging the mouse ALL the wasy up to the top of the screen, and clicking the X. Ugh. So annoying.

Ah, you see, that just reveals my (Internet) age. I started out with Netscape 1.1, long before IE and its F5 madness appeared. It's been Ctrl+R for me the whole time. Anyway, with Ctrl+R I don't have to take my fingers off the home row, which is vitally important. I almost got married in Reno once, but had to break it off because the lady wanted me to take my fingers off the home row.
