Well, I suppose this is as good a place as any to state that I'm kinda working on a sequel to Doukutsu Monogatari, or Cave Story if you prefer. I dunno if you'd be able to match the awesomeness of Cave Story though. It just....all worked. I dunno. The gameplay was great, the story was great, (a tad confusing though) the graphics were great (for 8-bit atleast), and even the music was great.

I'm thinking of reworking the gameplay a bit. Namely, I'm considering using the mouse for aiming and firing. It'd allow you to aim in any direction. I'll be using mostly sprites from the original. Really, I'm not even sure I'm going to do this.

I've been thinking a bit about the plot, and I think it'll be a direct sequel. It will assume that you did the Hard Path, if it matters. I'm not yet sure whether or not the main character will be the same as in Cave Story. My basic idea for the plot is something like this: The surface government, whoever it is that sent the robots to the Mimiga Island, start investigating the ruins of the island. Naturally, the main dude, whoever he may be, ends up there... and that's about as far as I've got.

All right, I was thinking in the shower just now, and I think I've got a better idea of what the story should be like.

A prequel would definitely be easier to do, in terms of storyline, at least. That way I don't have to worry about whether or not people did the Hard Path. It'll be about the original invasion of the island, as was suggested, and the main guy of Cave Story (who apparently is named Quote, according to Wikipedia) will be the protagonist in this as well. Curly Brace (Get it? Quote " and Curly Brace {... they're named after punctuation) will also be in this, and I think she'll play a larger role. I really liked that level where she came with you, so I'll try to incorporate that.

Anyways, the robots invade, and are sent to kill the Mimigas. However, upon seeing that the Mimigas are largely helpless and adorable little creatures (remember, they only ate the red flowers as a last resort), Curly Brace, Quote, and a third guy (whom I'm naming Bracket, to keep with tradition), leave the robot army to try and defend the Mimigas. Someone in Cave Story (I think it may have been Jenka) said that some of the robots had personalities. This leads me to believe that there were sentient robots like Quote and Curly Brace, and others which were just mindless drones.

Basically, you'll be up against two factions: the robots and the wearer of the Demon Crown. I think the mindless robots should look like that one you find in the room with the Core, that blows up after Curly investigates it.

Some things I really want to include in this:
1. Arthur, Toroko's brother, who apparently was a great Mimiga hero. He's still alive at the time. I think he'd be a really cool character.
2. I'd like to have a slightly more RPG-ish feel to the game, not a lot, more like Zelda. I'll probably try to have some kind of money thing, maybe more sidequests, too.
3. I think I'll add more weapons. The Polar Star will definitely be returning, and probably the Machine Gun as well. I want to add some very unconventional weapons, as well. For instance, I was thinking about a weapon that creates a temporary wall. The mouse aiming will let you specify the exact position of it, something that would have been impossible in Cave Story. Also, this could be used in place of a jetpack at some points in the game, as you could create a block then jump on it, and repeat.
4. There might be points where you have to choose between having either Bracket or Curly Brace come with you. I'm thinking of making Bracket slower but more powerful. Right now I'm thinking he'll either use a Sniper Rifle or some kind of melee weapon.
5. I obviously don't know the exact details of it yet, but I'm thinking of having a large underwater area. I think Quote should get an air tank either from the start or very early on, since it seems like something he was supposed to be built with. Also, a large Mimiga city sounds interesting.

This is still in the earliest of early stages. Like, it's mostly conceptual now. If I do make this, don't expect to see it for a couple of months, though I'll try and give updates on progress.

Woah, that sounds really cool, Santa. I like it.

Bracket should have a longer-range, more powerful verison of the Polar Star called the Polar Lance or something. Also, maybe some of the other Cave Story characters should appear in it, only younger. Like the Hermit Gunsmith, he was cool.

A city level would be neat, btw. Also, you should explore the outside of the island more, instead of just caves all the time.

EDIT: and going with the whole money thing, maybe you could buy weapons instead of finding them. Or both.

Jimmie. That Star Wars game pwns the living tar out of my game. If Nintendo made that, I predict it would become one of their best games ever. That has the potential to beat out Battlefront 2 in quality if it was made well.

Are there any other praises I can give this idea that I missed?

Sorry to revive a dead topic, but me and my friend are currently working on an RPG called Book of Runes. Here are some spell sprites we've made so far.

The only problem is, he seems convinced Game Maker is good for making RPGs in...I don't have any experience in Game Maker, but isn't it terrible for that sort of thing?

I don't know if this belongs here, but I have a game idea which I would like someone to program. Flash is preferable, but I'll settle for anything. Go to http://forum.hrwiki.org/viewtopic.php?t=9457 and read about it. It's a puzzle-ish game; I suspect it would be very simple to program. I'd do so myself if I were a programmer. :)
