I finally got Dial-A-Song from eBay. I'm likin' it so far.

I haven't heard nearly all the songs yet, but they're pretty cool.

I just remembered that Particle Man was on Tiny Toons too. Huh.

"Universe man, universe man..."

OK. After listening to all 52 songs on Dial-A-Song, I've come to a decision.

New Favorite Song: Man, It's So Loud in Here. Such an awesome song.

Okay, after reading Amazon's information about Dial-A-Song, I'm still hopelessly confused. I realize that DAS has 52 songs, all from different albums by They Might Be Giants. However, are the songs in it just favorites from all their albums, or a is the entire thing certain collection of albums? If I got Dial-A-Song, I wouldn't want to have to buy all the other CDs just to hear the songs that I'm missing.

So... is Dial-A-Song three or four albums in one, or is it just a collection of songs?

It's a collection of TMBG's best music from a whole bunch of different albums spanning 20 years. 52 songs ain't bad to start off with. I'd say buy DAS on eBay and if you like it buy more CDs.

I think TMBG is my new second favorite band. Second only to DEVO, of course.

That song is called "Wake Up Call".

As for my favorite song, it would be Ana Ng.

OK, after listening to DAS, I've discovered that Spider is unquestionably the strangest song of all time.

"Shpidah! He is our hero!"

AHHH.

THIS IS THE BEST THREAD EVER.

I can't pick a favorite, so it's between Cyclops Rock, Bangs, The Statue Got Me High, Ana Ng, New York City, Your Racist Friend, and John Lee Supertaster.

I gotta love, "I should be allowed to think". I've been a TMBG fan for 7 years, so I was thrilled when they made the experimental film music video.
Some other favorites consist of "Memo to the Human Resources" and "Dr. Worm"

I must admit that I Should Be Allowed To Think makes a nice statement. It's cool. Also, The End of the Tour is good. John Henry is an excellent album. I mean, "Meet James Ensor", "Window", 'Sleeping in the Flowers", "Snail Shell", you can't beat this stuff.

If you ever go to the Dial-A-Song website, keep trying until you get "Monsters of Mud". That has got to be one of my favorite songs. Tis' a shame it was never released. "Sensurround" from the S-E-X-X-Y album is a great, hysterical song, too.

I actually made a PHP script awhile back that takes all of the songs on the Dial-A-Song web site and loads them into a Winamp playlist. It kind of ruins the fun, I guess, since you don't have to click o'er and o'er again to get the song you want. I posted it to my blog, but right now my blog is apparently having issues, so I can't share it with you right now.

Anyway, I agree, Monsters of Mud is good times.

I love "Sensurround", too, but my enjoyment is tainted somewhat by the knowledge that it's on the soundtrack to the Power Rangers movie (In the likely but wholly depressing event that more than one Power Rangers movie has been made, I refer to the original (American) Power Rangers movie. Which I did not make my dad take me to when it was in theatres. I swear. ARBLGLBLBLBL?

Sorry for the necromancy, but I just realized something: My favorite TMBG song has changed A WHOLE FREAKIN' LOT. First it was Particle Man, then it was (I think) Experimental Film, it was probably a tie between Destination Moon and A Self Called Nowhere, then it was Experimental Film, then I leaned back towards A Self Called Nowhere (minus Destination Moon), then lately I became interested in Experimental Film again, and now I think my favorite song is definitely Au Contraire (I just got Indestructible Object).

EDIT: And now I just realized that I actually don't know which one is my favorite, because I'm listening to many TMBG songs right now and realized I like all of them. But some really good ones are "It's Kickin' In", "Ant", "Am I Awake?" "Why Does the Sun Shine?" and so many others.

I haven't heard a lot (if any) TMBG outside of H*R, so my favorite one is Expirimental Film.

Yeah!

I'm glad you necromanced, because now I have a chance to respond!

"James K. Polk," "Birdhouse in Your Soul," "Ana Ng," "Doctor Worm," "I Palindrome I," "Man, It's So Loud in Here," "She's An Angel," "How Can I Sing Like a Girl?," "The End of the Tour," "Experimental Film," "Wearing a Raincoat," "Museum of Idiots," "Au Contraire," and "Stalk of Wheat" are on the top of my list. There's probably more, but... I don't think there's anything not on the list.

So I guess my favourite would be their entire discography. :p Admittedly, though, I haven't heard all of their work, but I can't imagine disliking any of it.

Somewhat off-topic, their lives are superb. I particularly like a guitar- and accordion-only version of "Ana Ng" they performed on Jonathon Ross.

EDIT: I totally forgot "Dog on Fire," as heard on The Daily Show.

Very yes with the ditto action on that one.

And Speckeldorf, you really shoud buy an album and try some of their music. If you like Experimental Film, you should enjoy the others.

Or even (gasp) buy an album. ;)

Those looking for albums, if you're tight on money, I'd recommend TMBG's website (one of 'em, anyway). You can buy albums and live shows in mp3 format for $9.99. I myself am buying hard copies of what I can get my hands on (for collection reasons), but having their lives available sure is nice.

I'm also putting Direct from Brooklyn and Gigantic on my Christmas list (assuming I don't buy it myself before then). My parents love that I ask for CDs and DVDs instead of incredibly overpriced clothes. :p I'm also pre-ordering the Venue Songs Dual Disc DVD/CD.

And a question: Does Linnell have an official site for his State Songs album and other solo projects?

Do you guys really like TMBG, or do you like them because TBC like them? And after you answer that one answer this one: DId you even know about TMBG before Homestarrunner.com had things featuring them or their songs?

I liked them since before I knew about them, if that makes any sense at all.

No, actually, I heard "Particle Man" on Tiny Toons or something about ten years ago, and I liked it, but I didn't know who sang it.

Flash forward to about three months ago: I'm reading this thread, hearing people's suggestions, I buy Dial-A-Song on eBay, and voila, big fan.

The fact that TMBG are fans of H*R and regularly contribute to the site is an added bonus, to me.

It is a mix of both. Some of us were TMBG fans before the TBC made any of the Puppet Stuff or The Experimental Film, others were made fans by TBC.

No, actually, I heard "Particle Man" on Tiny Toons or something about ten years ago, and I liked it, but I didn't know who sang it.

Same here, only with "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)" instead. I mean, I was only 6 when the Flood album came out. I didn't know any bands. :p I also liked the Malcolm in the Middle theme "Boss of Me" and The Daily Show theme "Dog on Fire" before I knew it was TMBG who did those songs.

I only recently had a band name to put to these songs, though. I expressed interest in TMBG, and my friend Alan let me hear the A User's Guide To album. I was hooked. I've bought three albums since then and have no plans of stopping anytime soon.

But I'd like to point out that just because some forum members were introduced to TMBG via H*R, that doesn't mean they don't truly like TMBG. It just means that TBC gave them their first taste of the band's work. I mean, TBC are also fans of the old Batman television series--doesn't mean we all watch that. :p
