I think Ana Ng and Birdhouse in your soul are great too

But I'd like to point out that just because some forum members were introduced to TMBG via H*R, that doesn't mean they don't truly like TMBG. It just means that TBC gave them their first taste of the band's work. I mean, TBC are also fans of the old Batman television series--doesn't mean we all watch that. :p

Do you see a topic on the Batman television series?

Obviously, now, yes. :p But the fact that there wasn't one before only proves my point--we're not just hopping on some kind of TBC bandwagon. Yes, some here are very young (I myself am only 16) and, as you said, did not know of They Might Be Giants (or their name, at least) until H*R--that doesn't make them any less fans.

I liked the TMBG vs McSweeneys album enclosed with my McSweeney's #6 book.

Also, did you know that Istanbul (not Constanblablahblah) is't a TMBG song? They're doing a cover of an old novelty song.

I like TMG I got my first exposure back in Kablam! and thought they were a pretty cool band. TBC's TMBG stuff convinced me to be The Spine and I love all the songs on it. I'm gonna try and get more, but I might just get the ones I want off iTunes. hmm... Prevenge is added to my list.

I love TMBG vs. McSweeny's. "Mosh Momken Abadan" and "The Army Is Tired Now" are fantastic, and I love those little one-offs like "Dollar for Dollar" and "Grassroots Internet Revolution."

Yes, it was originally sung by The Four Lads. TMBG have actually recorded a lot of great covers, like "New York City" (originally by Cub), "Why Does the Sun Shine?" (Hy Zaret and Lou Singer), "Yeh Yeh" (Georgie Fame), "Caroline, No" (The Beach Boys), "We've Got a World that Swings" (Lil Mattis and Lois Yule Brown), and I cannot get enough of their cover of "Tippecanoe and Tyler Too" on the Future Soundtrack of America.

You can hear a lot of the rarer ones on Dial-a-Song or TMBG Clock Radio.

Does it really matter? Loads of people do cover songs and get money from it. Sometimes it becomes more successfull than the original artist.

Maybe you're not one of them, but I am pretty sure some people here are just TMBG fans just because they are over obsessive homestarrunner fans.

Maybe some people didn't hear about TMBG until homestarrunner, and now no of them and like them just because of there music, but I don't think that applies for everyone here.

I never said it wasn't good because someone else liked it. I never even said they wern't good! I said I bet some people here only like TMBG because TBC does. Jesus Christ, can't people have opinions here?

I'd have to go with Particle Man. It really stays in my head.

Thats one of their most famous songs, and there was a musical epidode in either tiny toons or loony toons with this song in it.

It was Tiny Toons. It featured Plucky as a Particle Man, a wrestler, and Hampton as the announcer. Triangle Man, Universe Man, and Person Man were Plucky's opponents. It didn't stick too closely to the song, but it was cute.

There was also one for "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)", which even had a scene with Plucky and Hampton as Linnell and Flansy, respectively.

Awsome. Seriously, you are the first internet person that I've met that has McSweeneys #6. Unfortunatly, I lost the book a while back. (frownyface)

Hey juys.

I need some advice.

I currently have Apollo 18, Flood, John Henry, Mink Car, and The Spine stored on my iPod. My friend has Severe Tire Damage, so I'm hoping I can get that from him when we go back to school.

My question is this: I have $15 to spend on iTunes. Which album(s) or EP(s) should I get?

My favorite album of all of them was Flood, with John Henry in second place, if that helps at all.

What say yous guys?

For me, it's pretty much a toss-up between "They'll Need A Crane" and "I've Got A Match", both from Lincoln. "They'll Need A Crane" has all of that awesome staccato and some excellent lyrics ("Lad looks at other gals, Gal thinks Jim Beam is handsomer than Lad, he isn't bad"), and "I've Got A Match" is simply a beautiful, sad song.

Of course, "Experimental Film" is the song that got me hooked in the first place. And no, I'm not just a fan because TBC are fans. I just like their music.

My favorite CD is probably Lincoln, but I like most of the stuff I've heard from them. (Daddy let me put The Spine in his car, so we listen to that a lot now, and we discuss the songs and sing along...ah, bonding over TMBG. :P)

If I were you I'd get Then: The Earlier Years, which includes They Might Be Giants, Lincoln, and a ton of bonus tracks and B-sides. Trouble is, it costs $20 on iTunes, but if you can spare the extra $5 I'd go for it. In leiu of that, I'd suggest Lincoln. However, if you're considering EPs, Indestructable Object is very solid; if you like rarities, try They Got Lost; and lastly, Severe Tire Damage is great if you dig live tracks.

I went with Lincoln, it turned out. I tried to LimeWire They Might Be Giants but I didn't get much farther than "Everything Right is Wrong Again".

Question: if I got Severe Tire Damage, would the Why Does the Sun Shine? EP still be worth getting? Or should I go with the Indestructible Object EP?

Sigh. Don't do that.

That's a tough one. Why Does the Sun Shine is a great EP, and Jessica and Whirlpool are both great songs that you can't hear anywhere else. You'll also get the studio version of Why Does the Sun Shine, which is essential to completists like me but perhaps not to you.

I knew them before H*R, but I never really thought about listening in again until I saw Experimental Film and thought, "That is a sweet song. I should look at their stuff again." Then I realized that I knew a lot more of their stuff than I thought I did, because they write for, like, everybody. (The words "Higglytown Heroes" can still make me shudder.)

My favorite TMBG song is a toss-up. I like "Birdhouse In Your Soul" because of its funky beat, silly, roundabout lyrics ("Although I respect that a lot, / I'd be fired if that were my job, / after killing Jason off / and countless screaming Argonauts!"), and because, for some reason, it reminds me of one of my Many Universes. "Another First Kiss" I like just for itself, as a regular old song--it's so good, it gave me shivers up and down my spine the first time I heard it. (I also like "New York City" for itself, but that's not an TMBG original, so...) And among their older, defnitiely-not-family-friendly stuff, I have a particular fondness for "88 Lines About 44 Women." Which is actually 89. That darn Katherine/Catherine gets 3. ("Nuh-uh. Not Catherine.") I think it's funny. I can't post my favorite line from it, though, because it's very... PG-13.

And though it's not my favorite, I think that their venue song "Trees" is funny. It reminds me an awful lot of Majora's Mask...

I, uh, don't really listen to TMBG that much.

My old roommate played "Birdhouse In Your Soul" for six hours straight one night, though.

Eeeheheeee. I'm happy. Got Flood and A User's Guide to They Might Be Giants: Melody, Fidelity, Quantity

This has made me very happy. Very happy indeed.

My favorite songs are-- by album because there's so many-

TMBG - Don't Let's Start, Puppet Head, Rhythm Section Want Ad
Lincoln - Ana Ng, Purple Toupee, They'll Need a Crane, Cowtown, Mr. Me, Where Your Eyes Don't Go

This is gonna turn out as me listing like half of their songs. :)

Flood - Birdhouse In Your Soul, Twisting, Dead, Letterbox, Women and Men
Apollo 18 - The Statue Got Me High, See the Constellation, My Evil Twin
John Henry - I Should Be Allowed to Think, Sleeping in the Flowers, Meet James Ensor
Factory Showroom - Till My Head Falls Off, New York City, How Can I Sing Like a Girl?, Metal Detector
Severe Tire Damage - Why Does the Sun Shine?, Doctor Worm, First Kiss
Mink Car - McGyver(if you count that), Man, It's So Loud in Here, Cyclops Rock, My Man, Mr. Xcitement
No! - Four of Two, Fibber Island, Sleepwalkers, I Am Not Your Broom
The Spine - Memo to Human Resources, Experimental Film, It's Kickin' In
Here Come the ABCs! - Alphabet of Nations, QU, Alphabet Lost and Found, LMNO

There. My favorite TMBG song. Hah.

She's An Angel is totally my favorite.

EDIT: This topic keeps getting buried and then resurrected again. I guess you just can't stop those They Might Be Giants lovers.

Nope. You can't.

I forgot one. From Bed, Bed, Bed. Happy Doesn't Have to Have an Ending

For some really weird reason, that song makes me extremely happy whenever I hear it. Almost giddy. I'm weird.
