I need to say something. I haven't been acting myself lately, and I have been frequently depressed and thinking of suicide. I know that I should not commit suicide, as it is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. I am easily irritated also. My parents recently started talking about me possibly having a mental disorder. The ones they have talked about are me being bipolar, and ADD. I don't know hat I should do. Please help... |

Wow, Cheatachu. It takes a ton of courage to come out and say something like that. I'm really stunned by that. First of all, it sounds like you've been talking to your parents about it, which is great. It can be tough to talk to parents sometimes, and it's good that you're doing it. If there's anybody in the world that can help you most, it's probably them. I don't know your parents, but if they're good, loving parents, then it's important to trust them and confide in them. They can get you the help you need. If you're feeling suicidal and haven't told them, you should. Suicide and suicidal tendencies are scary things for everybody, your parents included, but it's a lot easier to deal with if you don't feel so alone. I'm not a psychiatrist so please don't take my advice as fact. That said, there's some stigma associated disorders like bipolar disorder and ADD, but should you be diagnosed with one (or both) of them, you shouldn't feel ashamed. Millions of people in the U.S. have been diagnosed with these disorders. They're an unfortunate part of modern life for some people, including several people who I am very close to. But they can be treated. Both counseling and medication can help. It may take some time to find the right counselor or the right medication for you, but it's important to keep moving forward. If you feel like your treatment isn't working, then that's something you should be honest with your parents and doctors about. Hiding your feelings from them or from yourself can be counterproductive. One thing I can recommend is that you keep a journal (like the paper kind that you keep under your pillow, not the Internet kind). At the end of the day you can write down all of your thoughts and feelings and it will help you to make sense of them and keep from feeling overwhelmed. The biggest thing, I think, is to be honest with your parents and, with their help, find a doctor you feel you can trust. |

I just wanted to back up IJ in that you needn't be ashamed in the event that you are diagnosed with a disorder. My sister is bipolar, my dad suffers from anxiety and panic attacks, and I got through a serious bout of depression about 5 years back. Keeping a journal is one of the best things you can do aside from medical/psychiatric help. This might sound cold, but keep in mind that I've gone through a somewhat similar situation: Someday you'll be able to look back on all your sad feelings and be happy that you've overcome them. You might even be able to laugh about it. I am. Hang in there, buddy. Talk with your folks and see what you can do about seeing a good doctor. |

Thanks everyone. I feel a little better knowing that I'm not alone in this matter, and that you guys are with me 100%. I did have a counselor, but he was a student and he left. Everything seems to have gone downhill since then, so I think I will ask my parents about seeing another doctor. |

Just don't forget sweetie, you are a wonderful, beautiful, worthwhile human being. And I know that there are people in your life who care about you and are willing to help you. Is there a counselor at your school? I know you said you used to have one that moved away, but perhaps there's another? You've got a good idea about talking to your parents - talk to as many adults that you trust as possible until you find someone who will assist you. Good luck.

well even though the excitement kind of wound down, some advice i have, beside the journal, find anything you like, like me, i'm not much of a fan of writing in my spare time, i like to draw or design images on the computer..or just listen to music, or watch anything that tailors to you...but mostly just think everything through..and i guess this only applies if your disposition ensues...but, you can never..actually i don't have much else to say, i guess i'm done. |

Actually DTP, I think you've got a good point (if I'm understanding you correctly). Hobbies are a great way to relieve stress. Take me; my hobby is also my job (but not currently, unfortunately) - I'm an actor. As for other hobbies, well, obviously, I like the internet, I also like to exercise, sing, listen to music. Bottom line - we're all rooting for you 1-UP C. And anyone else who may be experiencing similar problems.

Here's a small piece of wisdom to glean: If you do have ADD, don't worry. With a little discipline and hard work, you can actually overcome it and never have to take medicine in your adult life. I started on Ritalin when I was about eight, and took it until I was 17 .Then I decided that I was never gonna take it again. And I haven't. Does that help any? Heh. |
