Something is seriously freaking my cat (Rocky) out. Everytime somebody touches him, he jumps back several feet. He's also acting very nervous in general. Has this happened to anyone else's pets? I can't get him to calm down. :( If anybody has any suggestions/explanations I'd appreciate it.

If it helps anything, Rocky's about four years old and we adopted him from an animal shelter a few months ago.

How long has he been doing this?

My suggestion would be to leave him alone for awhile. When you're around him, move slowly, don't make any sudden movements or loud noises. Don't follow him around. Don't try to pick him up, and only pet him if he looks like he wants to be petted. If you go to pet him and he backs away or looks alarmed, don't persist.

If he just got spooked, he'll eventually lose the jibblies and be back to normal, you just have to be patient.

If he keeps it up, though, take him to the vet.

Did you get another pet recently? After we got a dog, my cat was freaking out like that for the next couple of days.

Talk very calmly and softly to it. Whenever my cat gets scared, usually talking calmly, petting it slowly, and just over-all calming it will do it.

Even though my cat will meow if you walk by it. Er...

He's been acting like this for a few days now. He hung around my room for a while, and he seemed to be back to normal last night and this morning. He just started doing it again. And no, we don't have any other pets. I'm just leaving him be for the time being. Thanks for the suggestions.

Aww, the poor thing. Frankly, I think you should call your vet and ask her/him what they think about the situation. You could also try calling the animal shelter and asking if they know anything about the poor little fellow's history -- did he come from an abusive or neglected background which might make him jumpy from time to time, for example? I sincerely hope not, but it would be a very important thing to know.

I'm suspecting one of three things:

1. Sight loss. This is going to sound serious, and thus I very much hope it isn't true, but if your kitten is having trouble seeing he would very definitely react badly to unseen touch. Call the vet. Make sure.

2. Planetary vibes. Cats often get the jibblies before a storm, or an earthquake, or something as simple as an odd change in the weather. I can still remember my cat acting quite odd pre-quake -- more meowylike and such.

3. Regular catitude. Cats are mysterious, often-incomprehensible creatures, and they do mysterious, often-incomprehensible things. And I adore them for it.

So, yeah. Call. And good luck -- let us know how it turns out.
