People argue all the time about what is the hardest sport to play, either professionally, or just in the backyard. I'd like to know what you guys thinks. Discuss. Discern. Perhaps agree to disagree?

I happen to think ice hockey would be the toughest sport. First off, you have to skate well at very high speeds. Second, the puck is small , hard and moves at speeds above 100 mph. Third, you're avoiding 230 lb. men or 180 lb. women (depending) moving at very high speeds while they try to knock the snot out of you. Fourth, it gets cold on ice. Fifth, you have guys and gals with last names like Hrink and Jascyzcyn. And finally, those skates look pretty sharp.

I lieks hockey, and I play it. Yeah, it is hard sometimes. The fact that no one wears full helmets at professional level just increases the danger.

Hitting a baseball is hard. It comes in really fast and you don't have much time to react, and yet you're still supposed to crush it really far.

Baseball is hard. As if batting right-handed wasn't enough, I also practice switch-hitting, and have been doing so for six years. It's hard enough to hit a 70-mph fastball, but even harder to do it twice, from both sides of the plate.

Well as with hitting really far, that's not the hard part. If you hit it well, then it will go far. On the other hand, if you can hit it bad and still make it go far, well that's for the harder swingers.
No sport is easy to play at high level, although some are easier than others. Some you can't pick up at all but aren't any harder at a top level.
Ever done Olympic-style Hammer throw? Never tried it, but it'd be two weeks of practice before you could even throw it 40 feet, let alone 270 (WR something like 284'7) But if you're big, strong, fast, and have done it for 6 months, you can do it 220 every time. Conceptually easy at the pro level.
Now, most of us wouldn't last more than 10 seconds against a top tennis player, say, Roger Federer. But it's pretty easy to pick up; anyone can do that. Same with ping pong.
I did play hockey a little in fourth grade, albeit roller hockey. In my opinion at least, this is something more like tennis that anyone can do. However at the top, professional level, it seems it's one of the harder things but not the hardest. It's not that hard to avoid a 230 pound man flying at that speed, if you're 230 pounds yourself. The puck is traveling over white ice, as opposed to a baseball which sort of blends with the surroundings. The spikes look sharp, but for the most part I imagine you keep your distance. One thing for sure though, hockey is like super speed skating; it lasts for a long time, you have to turn on a dime, etc. Someone down the street was the captain of the school team, and he was telling me how sore he was from going 1 1/2 hours of skating for practice; taht's what the coach made them do. Mind you, he ran a 5:25 mile. Getting cold on ice? If you're moving that fast, no.
Practically speaking, some people have thrown truly (don't completely trust the radar gun reading, there are reasons you shouldn't) over 100 mph. When it surpasses roughly that, human eyes cannot follow the baseball. Take Ted Williams, one of the greatest batters ever, but when he faced a pitch(or 30?) from legend Steve Dalkowski. Dalko never made the major leagues, but you gotta remember he had what many believe is the fastest pitch ever, a good 5 mph beyond Nolan Ryan on average, perhaps 10. He couldn't make the major leagues beacue he had as many walks as strikes...in other words, horrendous accuracy, missing by up to like 10 feet. Williams swore he never even saw the ball during their one encounter. Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb had to swing by hearing and not by seeing Walter Johnson's fastballs, which were also invisible (unless you dart your eyes in the same direction).
Hard call what the toughest sport is. If you ask me I say gymnastics....if you don't want to miss the dang bar/beam, you have to be within 15 degrees after doing like a 540 degree turn. If you pick an object in a room without sunlight, say, a door, then close your eyes and try to turn 360 degrees, well then open your eles and see how close to the door you were. When doing that I do less than 5/6 of a turn and end up pointing 3 feet right of the door. If you have any lack of appreciation for the very buff-armed male gymnasts, take two sturdy chairs, put a hand on each as far apart as you can, and try to lift your legs off the ground. I can get close but not quite, let alone hold it for 3 seconds. Baseball is close though.

I'll cast my vote for wheelchair rugby (on account that I saw MurderBall last night). I really do admire what those guys for doing what they do no matter what happened to them in the past.

I've been in a wheelchair and lemme tell you, the way the players make moving in those chairs like magic.

I almost forgot... I hear if you're not already like a super-star gymnast by age 10, you will never be good at it.

Badmitton is probably my favorite non-major sport. I find it pretty easy and addicting like those atari games; I don't know why. In badmitton at school, I was put in the wrong class for gym and switched. So, I wasn't on the class list for that class. So, whenever we played badmitton I would end up without a teammate because the teacher would forget to assign me. And yet I would always win.

Actually I like playing one on two badminton.
You ever watched world-class badminton? From that I don't think it's the hardest sport at a high level. Anyways, it's not very fast, but an awful lot of strategy. Lots of drop shots, lobs, crosscourt, it's pretty cool to watch because it's so slow yet to intricate. If your opponent correctly anticipates your shot though, it speeds up very fast.......last I read, a birdie has been clocked at 162 mph. To be honest I think that can easily be broken, as can the fastest tennis serve(153), both by like 20+ mph. Wimps.

Gymnastics like baseball. If you haven't leanred batting coordination by a relatively early age, it's much harder to pick up, and you'll never catch up with the peopel who already learned it beforehand if they keep practicing.

What, do you think a big muscleman like a linebacker or something, if taguht the porper technique, could serve faster than Roddick? And win the champeenship? I'd like to see someone try.

(Australian Football League)
I mean, you have to run, bounce the ball, evade the tackle, maybe handball it or kick it, and then maybe catch it and kick for goal.

It's hard stuff. You should watch one of these games.

Post subject:  Pitching is hard.

I think the hardest thing in all sports is to be a good pitcher.
I was a good pitcher, and the reason I stopped was because of injury. The hard part of pitching isn't actually throwing the ball, but being able to use mechanics well, and hit your locations. Very hard to do.
I still remember my most dominating performance as a pitcher. I pitched five innings, with 15 strikeouts. I only threw two excess pitches, which were both fouled off.
