The other day, I started thinking about all the topics and posts, and thought it might be interesting to look at some of the data on the forum. It didn't turn out very interesting, and I didn't do anything really fancy, but I figured it couldn't hurt to post my findings.

Code:
Title                topics    posts   ratio     percent
                                       (p/t)    of total

General Discussion      438     9764    22.3        6.5%
Toons                   142     5420    38.2        3.6%
Emails                  212     7634    36.0        5.1%
Characters              199     5888    29.6        3.9%
Games                    62     2382    38.4        1.6%
--------------------------------------------------------
WikiForum              1053    31088    29.5       20.6%

Wiki Decision Polls      20      297    14.9        0.2%
Fun Polls               210     5592    26.6        3.7%
--------------------------------------------------------
WikiPolls               230     5889    25.6        3.9%

Off-subject Discussion  826    28585    34.6       18.9%
Forum Games             381    66801   175.3       44.2%
Getting to Know You     135     9507    70.4        6.3%
Religion and Politics   170     7222    42.5        4.8%
(Not counting Spam Vault)
--------------------------------------------------------
Off-subject            1512   112115    74.2       74.2%

Suggestions              69      793    11.5        0.5%
HelpDesk                170     1283     7.5        0.8%
--------------------------------------------------------
Information             239     2076     8.7        1.4%

Total                  3034   151168    49.8

The data is a few days old, but not really out of date.

Off-Subject takes up almost 75% of the Forum? That's cool.

Although I can't say I'm surprised.

True dat. I probably wouldn't come here if not for the Off-Subject.

Though the HR related stuff gets my attention a lot.

We need the off subject. I'm not saying we should post in it less. I'm saying we should post in other parts more.

Well we all post in the other forums (I assume) but I guess there's more to talk about in the Off-Subject forums. I mean TBC update about every week and we all make a post or two about the update, as well as a few other things, but the Off subject boards are consantly being updated with new input from other users.

That's prooty cool stuff. And it basically reflects back on me. I probably have at least 75% of my posts in the Off-Subject department. So, thanks for da data, racer.

I don't think so. The vast majority of my post have come in Off-Subject. I post occasionally in General Discussion but that's only when there is a new toon or e-mail.

This is kind of interesting. Maybe six months ago I did a similar analysis and found that Forum Games accounted for more posts than all of the other areas combined, by a healthy margin. Also, Word Association alone had more posts in it than any of the other forums (not thread, but forum). It still accounts for more than 5% of our posts (how's that for madness?), but now trails behind General, Off-Subject, and GTKY. In other words, it looks like Forum Games' role is diminishing, which I see as a positive thing because, while the Games are fun, it means more real discussion is going on.

This Forum surely wouldn't be as great as it is now if the ratio of off subject discussion to actual Homestar stuff wasn't what it is. I started off posting mostly about typical stuff on the site (toons, E-mails, characters, etc.) but it wasn't until I got more involved in the off-subject stuff that I grew A LOT closer to the community here. Chat also helped, of course.

Also, I think the Forum Games stat is a little misleading, considering most games posts are one line comebacks, words, numbers in countdowns, etc. A 'normal' post elsewhere in the Forum I'd say is about the equivalent of 5-10 games posts, so I don't think it's as unbalanced as it seems.

I agree with Puphles, there is just endless amounts of stuff to talk about in the off-subject.
