Ok, being from the best hockey city in the NHL, I think that it's great that hockey is finally back! I wanted to know how you guys felt about the new rules (shoot-offs, all the stick regulations, etc) and just your thoughts bout the game. But please, don't tell me your team is going to win the Cup...that's just silly. Unless you are a Philly fan. I mean, we got Forsberg, Hatcher, and Rathje, in addition to Primeau, Therien, Johnsson, and the almighty Gagne...can anyone beat Philadelphia?

I'm glad it's back too. I think the new rules will improve the game. The bigger nets and smaller goalie pads will mean more scoring. And um...boo phiily

As much as I'm annoyed we lost hockey for an entire season, I'm incredibly psyched about the Flyers this year. Yeah, I might be a huger baseball freak, but playoff hockey is just the ultimate, and all indications are that my team has an amazing shot at the Cup. I can't WAIT for the 82 game preseasion to get out of the way so the real season can start.

The rule changes sound good to me, especially the shoot-outs. Ties in sports always seem really anticlimactic to me.

And come on. The Flyers might not be fast, but boy are they big. Thedore? Against Hatcher? I'd like to see him try!

I'm excited about hockey's return. Not like I have a team to watch, though. But, it will bring some more fun, being able to watch the games on T.V.

I think my team, the Boston Bruins, may have a chance. With the new salary cap, they are the most flexible team in the league. And, they still have Thornton, Samsonov, and Raycroft, along with a whole mess of other players.

They're like the Yankees. No one wants to see THEM win again! If the Flyers don't win, I'd like to see Toronto win. We've beaten them so many times in the post-season, I feel sorry for them.

Correction the the Red Wings only have 10 Stanley Cup that is less than half of what my Canadiens have (24) and three less than the Maple Leafs (13). So they are not the "Yankees of Hockey" not by a long shot, they just have been dominate over the last decade, that's all.

Correction: those teams are Canadian. Here in America, we see Detroit fans like we see New York fans. We can't diss Canadian fans easily...they're in Canada! But Detroit fans can easily diss us.
I dislike the Wings and Devils, based purely on the fact of the past decade's dominance by both teams. I mean, I hate Atlanta Braves because of the same dealy.

Even though I live in Montreal now, I'm a huge Ottawa fan. But yeah, I think I'm the only person who doesn't like the idea of shootouts replacing overtime. Unless they switch during the playoffs. Shootouts just aren't as cool as overtime. I do like the smaller goalie pads, though. That's what I kept complaining about last season.

I know one goaltender that the rule will not effect: Martin Brodeur. When you don't need bigger pads to improve your playing ability, you are good.

I don't think the shootout rules apply to the playoffs, though, or else that would be completely stupid and unfair. The way overtime games are set up in the playoffs, where anyone can score THE game winner at any time, accounts for a lot of the drama! In the regular season, your team is guaranteed a point just for making it to overtime anyway, and there's only so much excitement you could have in a 5 minute OT with no shootout. Especially during the most meaningless regular season in sports.

Plus, there will be teams that probably aren't playoff contenders who are going to have a TON of trouble drawing fans, and I think having the shootouts during the regular season will generate some much needed interest in those cities.

I feel the smaller pads will help. People are often critical oh this, because they say "Well, then it'll be more like lacrosse than hockey because they'll score every two seconds." I reply, "Yeah what about the 1980s?" Of course, the goalies in the 80's were better overall than the goalies today, but if the goalie's good, it shouldn't matter. Some goalies who use huge pads (I'm lookin' in your direction Brodeur) are products of the pads, and it will be interesting to see how much movement they'll do in order to clear five-hole and three-hole shots.

It does matter what size pads Brodeur uses, he will still be a brick wall.

Well, he does have massive pads. His butterfly trap is great regardless, but he has so many kick saves that glance his pads. But it's not just him. He's just probably the most famous goalie who has immense pads, bigger than most.

True. That dude is sooo cheap. I mean, he is good. But cmoe on. Those things aren't pads, they're...really big pads. They give a definite advantage for someone slower like him.

Take a look at Ron Hextall, the old-man goalie. Back in the mid-eighties, he was fast....real fast. But as he aged, naturally he got slower...a lot slower. When the larger pads were introduced towards the end of his career, his numbers jumped up again, and he was saving a lot more than he should have.

How about Patrick Roy, he never changed the size of his pads from when he broke into the league back in 1986, to when he retired in 2002.

Roy didn't slow like Hextall. He had so many injuries from coming out of the goal (an action he took way too many times) that he felt it necessary to change pads. Also, Hextall's pads weren't much larger than Roy's.

Here is a pic of Marty Brodeur. His pads don't look to be that big.

It's relative. He is a bigger guy, but when you mention Giggy, I rmembered how much bigger his pads were than Brodeur. It seems like goalies after 2000 just got huge pads, overall. That's why I am for the pad regulation rule. I mean, they made soccer goals bigger because of lack of scoring. But guess what...it didn't matter. The goal keepers adjusted to the game, but they required more skill than before. So yeah, I think at first there will be more goals..just not in the long run.

My thought is they'll go more for non-European goalies as a result. They are a bit bigger over here.
