Darn! you have to have a Gmail account to sign up for this. I actually don't really see the point in this, when there are plenty of other IM networks. If I was to sign up, I'd do it soon so I could get a good numberless name.

I've got a load of invites left. Just tell me your email address, and I'll send one to you.

I would get this Google Talk thing, but, my computer runs Windows ME, and you need 2000, XP, or 2003.
Durn.

Just downloaded it, and my, it's compact in comparison to other chat programs.

My username, of course... Suicune64. I need more contacts, don't know many people with Gmail.

Also, I've got plenty of invites on hand, so if you need one, feel free to ask.

I also have a bunch of invites for anyone who wants Google Talk but doesn't have a GMail account. PM me your email address and I'll send it along.

Well, this took a lot of work and the admins probably won't use it, but here.

Also, if you have a cell phone, you can now sign up for Gmail without an invite. Presumably this is in place to keep the spambots from creating new accounts en masse.

The reason we probably won't use it is that it's not built into phpBB. In order to use it we'd have to go into the source and hack at the code, running the risk of breaking something. It's nothing personal.

If Google Talk gets popular enough, then a button and Profile setting will probably be added by the phpBB folks themselves, but that may be some time in coming.

Um, no thanks. Tom's got things pretty much under control in the code-smithing area.

Yeah.

But a lot of people do pay attention to google, apparenty. The showed Google Talk on Attack of the Show yesterday, and proceeded to give out an address to contact them. Seconds later, lots of people sent invites; "ACCEPT, ACCEPT, ACCEPT!" I have them on there of course

And there was an article in the Wall Street Journal.

okay

not easy...
Also, the file must be a .wav

    1. Download and Install PE Explorer

    2. Open PE Explorer, then open the Google Talk Executble.

    3. Click on the little 4-colored diamond thing at the top.

    4. Expand folder "Wave"

    5. Double click on "121"

    6. At the top, there should be a "Open icon"

    7. Open the .wav file you wnat, and then click replace.

    8.Repeat 5-7 for "125"

    9. Save your file over Googletalk.exe

    10. Reboot your computer.

Ah, I should have known it would take a resource editor. :)

I'm working on a 10 Things You Didn't Know About Google Talk article for Download Squad, so maybe I'll include this. You'll get credit, of course.

If anybody can tell me where GT hides its log files (or any other relevant files), please let me know.

Next thing you know, they're going to be opening a chain of discount stores... Then come the Sergey's Club warehouse clubs, then the Googlemart SuperCenters, then the Neighborhood Markets, then... All's I'm sayin is that the Walton brats better enjoy the money while it lasts.

I'll probably use it, although I really want it to be integrated with Trillian, I hate having 200000 different IM clients running on my compy at the same time.

I mean the "desktop manager"? I heard that over 90% of everybody has that thing. It makes you wonder what would happen if Google really did try to take over the earth... [[shudder]]

It's basically jabber, so if you don't want the voice talk, you can use it in Trillian.

No Google Talk for me. Dang Windows 98...

I just want to hold out until Longhorn.

Well, Gaim has Jabber support (Google Talk is based on Jabber) and probably supports Windoze 98.
