I know this may not be fresh news, but it kind of slipped under the radar screen somehow, so I though I'd bring it up.

Earlier this year, scientists discovered an object larger than Pluto orbiting the sun. Since Pluto is a planet, this new object must also be a planet.

Here's the Wikipedia article.

What do you think? Should it be considered a planet? If so, what should they name it?

I'd vote "Persephone", myself.

Ooh, Mount Palomar. I had camp there in sixth grade!!
Anyway, that's news to me, and I would vote to name it "Persephone", like Jitka

Maybe Omicron Persei 8, or Kamino, or Tangea. (Ten bucks to anyone who knows what all of those are from.)

I guess it is a planet. Persephone is a good name. This is the only greek god who I remember and whose name doesn't sound weird when thinking of a planet. Well, I think my second choice would be Demeter.

Omicron Persei 8-Futurama
Kamino-Durr, Star Wars
Tangea-Uh, I don't know.

It's too bad that there's already an asteroid named Persephone. There's another named Demeter, too.

Hopefully they'll change the asteroid Persephone's name and give it to the planet.

how about Earl?
I'm just sayin'!

I've heard it argued that, if this thing is a planet, some of the asteroids should be considered planets, too... I've even been to conferences where it's been, convincingly, argued that Pluto should be stripped of planet status.. I dunno..

You don't get your ten bucks till you say what the third one is, Jitka.

"Okay, class! Can you say the ten planets?"
"Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto and 2003_UB313."

I say we name it "The Moooooooooon".

Personally, I think I'd call it Bob. Don't you think that's a good name for a planet?

For the name of the planet, I propose we keep going with the Greco/Roman Gods. I like the planet to be named either Juno(Hera) or Minerva(Athena).

I think there's something already named Juno, but I may be mixing up my facts.

So that means we'll either have ten or eight planets, seeing as this one's bigger than Pluto, and could actually be considered a planet.

IJ: Of course we'd officially name it Persephone, but everyone will call it Rupert. Like in HGTTG.

Can I have my geek badge back now? Pretty please? I need that. Badly.

Trombone/Shommpio/whatever, I don't know Tangea. Can I get $6.66 for two out of three, maybe?

The planet should definetely be named "Tempest". I mean, can anyone honestly say that there's a name cooler than "Tempest"? I think not.

Either that, or "Pacmanistan".

I, too, vote for Rupert. It would be infinitely cool to have an entire planet that is a reference to the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!

Yeah, I heard about that, but I'm surprised it didn't get more coverage. It seems a little more important that whether the Red Sox won a big game or not.

Indeed it does. The Red Sox are the most important thing.

It seems every couple of years, scientists come out with a "Tenth Planet". Remember last time, it was just Pluto's Moon? Ah, well.

They should name it the "Acekirby". And yes, I am an egomaniacal fool. But, for serious, I think "Tempest" is good.

Tangea...OH! It's from that Buzz Lightyear cartoon. I watched it when I was leetle. Do I get a prize?

I vote for Rupert too. That would be great.

Personally, I'd prefer if they stick to the well known Greek gods. Can't break the theme now. (Although they're probably already taken by moons) Juno would be a nice choice.

Persephone is Rupert, silly.

Yep. Not the best movie I've seen, kinda boring, but it had Nathan Lane in it. So it's all good.

I'm Toast Painting myself.

It would be odd if they named the tenth planet "Icarus"

...or better yet, "Didymus".

No, I'm serious about that. Although I think that wouldn't happen. It would be flattering though.

Off Toastpainting, I agree with the name "Persephone" for the 10th Planet, the daughter of...uh...Demeter? I can't remember.

Yup, the daughter of Demeter/Ceres who was kidnapped by Pluto/Hades, brought to the underworld, and forced to eat a pomegranate, thus creating the winter months.

It's an appropriate name, considering the legend behind it. Plus the Backronym could still work. "My Very Educated Mother Just Sent Us Nine Pizza Pies!"
