Today, right after all my family got to my house to party for Labor Day, a brush fire started right behind my house. There have already been one hundred acres burned, and we were asked to evacuate. So, we did. Here's news about it.
The a
I took my iPod, and nothing else. I really don't have much of value to me. Other than photos, which my mom had already thrown into her car.

Here's a map of the area. The red circle is my house, and the big red square is the burned area. Note that the fire IS still burning, so, if it burns down my house, I might not be on for a very long time.

So, with that being said, have you guys had to evacuate your houses for any reason?

And mods, move this if you need.

Holy crap dude, that's scary, and I'm praying for your sake that this fire gets put out before your house does! Hopefully it won't come to that, but if it does, at least you've got your iPod and pictures, and we'll all have an idea of what's up if you're not on for awhile.

For the sake of the topic question, I can only remember having to evacuate my house once. Something was burning next door when no one was home there at the time, and people around the neighborhood were thinking OUR side of the house was on fire (I live in the right half of a double), but fortunately no damage was done.

Man that's close to your neighborhood. I'm hoping that the fireman can at least keep it from reaching you guys.

And I've never needed to evacuate. There have been voluntary evacuations for my area because of bad weather, but I've never actually went.

Whoa.

Yes, California is known for its share of wildfires and earthquakes. No, I haven't had anything like these, but I was forced to evacuate my house once (when I was 2) when some gangster guy threw a metal pole through one of the windows. The police arrived on the scene but never found that crook guy.

Anyways, I pray that you won't have to deal with this in the future. If you do, [toastpaint]this will take my respect for undead legions of zombies to a whole new level. A darker level.[/toastpaint]

I hope your house and belongings come out of this safe. I've never had to deal with a fire before, but I've heard that brush fires can spread terribly. Hopefully, like porple said, the fireman can at least keep it at bay from the neighbourhood.

As to your question, once my family had to evacuate our house when I was very small, due to a carbon monoxide alarm. I can't remember if it was a false alarm or not; all I remember is us piling into the car and driving to the high school (for some reason).

We were supposed to evacuate during some of the recent hurricanes (last year's Ivan, this year's Dennis & Katrina), but we never left our house. Luckily, we only suffered minor roof damage and the loss of our fence (and refrigerated foods during the power outage).

Well, the fire is still burning, and it has now reached over 150 acres. Luckily, it's moving way east, so at least WE are safe. I ampraying for the people on the other side of the hill, though. I have a friend over there who was told to have mandatory evacuation, and that can be very scary.
So, I really hope this thing get put out quick. There are 300 firemen, and about five helicopters.

EDIT: Here's a picture.

There's pretty much smoke every where you look.

Whoa, iKi, I really hope that your neighbourhood turns out okay. Seems that the fire is moving away from your place, but I'm still sending Canadienne-vibes to all the other people in your town.

Ooh. Canadieen-vibes. Thank you very much.
I hate fires. So much. I wish they would die.
I also hate seeing those images, only two short years after the California wildfires. It's scary to think that there is even more danger to my home than in those fires, which wiped out thousands and thousands of homes.
The firemen say that the fire has the "potential" to burn 500 acres. It still has 350 to go, then, I suppose.
Even though I am relieved the fire is moving away from my house, at the same time, I am feeling grief for the people who are going through the traumas of the fire encroaching their houses. Like my friend who lives right on the other side of a crest, where the fire is burning.

That really, really sucks, Iki. But on the bright side, the people the fire is approaching have had ample warning to collect their belongings and evacuate, so all that will be lost is their homes. But...that'd still suck. Hope everything turns out all right. *sends telepathic good luckness*

On my end o' the nation, we've had bad flooding in my town from hurricanes from time to time. In 2003, there was bad flooding that ruined half (not my half) of town, and people were displaced while their houses were cleaned up. The road to my school was washed out. Then last year, Hurricane Isabel flooded the town almost as badly, but still, no one's house was destroyed.

Good luck, though, Iki. Hope they get it under control.

Iki that sucks.

I have never had to evacuate my house but I have had a few "Mandatory: No Travel" warnings though.

First off iKi, I hope that nothing happens to you or anyone that you know. That's really scary. I don't know what I would do in that situation. As for evacuation, I've never had to do that, so I guess I'm lucky. But there has been times where I couldn't leave due to extreme snowfall.

Just another little update.
After almost eleven hours, the fire is still only 40% contained. But, the firefighters are working all night to put it out. Also, all evacuees were given the okay to return to their homes, so that is another good sign.
Unfortunately, stepping outside really sucks now. One step, whiff of large amounts of smoke. Not fun.
Well, at least I can go to bed knowing that the fire is already past my house.
When it started, the fire was only fifty yards from my house. That's scary to think of. Luckily, no structures were destroyed.
Here are some pictures. My favorite is the one of the mounted policemen, which my brother sent in.

Wow. Glad to hear that you're gonna be all right, iKi. Still, Canadienne-vibes abound for all the rest of the people of San Diego.

I seriously hope you and all the peoples in your town are gonna be a-okay. Like seriously. Be's careful.

As for me, I've never had to evacuate, but just last night, water was pouring out from the wall of our utility closet and went in all the rooms, except mine, since it's elvevated slightly. Man, it was 12:00 AM and the fire department came. It was leeking through to other people's apartments. And it was all because of the people above us's water that weren't even there or something.

Loads of bad smelling wet carpets. The fire department was there. The super was away, so our old super was the only one who knew where the water valves were.

As I said on another thread (Ooh! I'm a poet and didn't know it!), I'm really sorry to hear about the danger to your house. I'd certainly be very worried if I was in your circumstance. Right now, we're still working with hurricane refugees and hurricane logistics here in Greenville.

Okay, the fire's out now. But, it's really weird seeing all the charred remains down in the canyon. I'm not sure how much it burned, and I am not sure when it was finally put out.
Anyways, thanks for all the compassion, guys. It really helped.

I'm glad you're not on fire, iKi..
Seriously, man, wildfires suck. I usually go to the SPC's site every morning and look at convective outlooks and fire weather. You'd be suprised how dry it is, like everywhere.
This could be a bad fall fire season in several areas. Hopefully, you've had your fire for the year.

When I was three, we had a house fire. It was all because of this little boy, about 2 years older than me, I can hardly remember, but he had a lighter and was lighting on fire all of my moms clothes. I remember trying to blow them out, but it caught fire of the closet and I went running for under my bead. Our whole house was burn'd to a crisp, and it was a week before christmas. It was one of the biggest disasters that my family suffered, other than the suicide of my cousin.

And I'm glad that you're okay. I also hope that your house don't catch fire. Good luck.

I haid to evacuate the house a few years ago because my cat Monty brought in this huge snake, and my dad wasn't there (My mum is too scared about snakes).

You see, he sometimes ran out of the house, and we lived near a forest, so he always ran into there and was bringing in like geckos or moths or anything he could find.

The snake thing started a backlash which is too long to talk about.

I live in the Houston area and I am going to voluntarily evacuate tonight to get away from Hurricane Rita that is very likely to hit my area. I promise you my family wouldn't be evacuating if Katrina didn't 3 weeks ago. We would be waiting it out.

I'll be fine, but wish my house and friends some luck.

Hurricanes are scary. Good call, evacuating. I would have done it.

Wow. Drama. Thank goodness you guys are all right.

And nope, I've never had to evacuate. But... um... there was this one time last winter when the water pipe ON THE EXACT SAME CORENER ON WHICH I LIVE froze and exploded, and we had absolutely no water for a few days. Which means= no flushing the toilet, no washing hands, no cooking anything involving water, no showers, et cetera. And we live on a hill, and these huge rainstorms came and all the towns around us were completely flooded out. So I feel bad for those people.

I'm definitely wishing the best for your house.
My sister lives in Houston, and I have no idea what she is going to do...

There was a brush fire near my house one.

It got about 50 yards from where I lived before it got contained.

I heard some people lost their backyards.

I think that the people in the predicted strike zone of Rita (as well as people near it) would be well served by an evacuation. Of course, there will be people who don't heed the warnings and make a voluntary evacuation, and I suppose that will be George Bush's fault, somehow.
Anyway, this thing is gonna be big, and, as far as I can see, it's not going to encounter too much that is gonna be detremental to strengthening in the next 24-36 hours. In other words, it's should get stronger in the next day and a half. If you're in the way, you need to do something to not be in the way.
Keep in mind, just because the center isn't going to pass directly over you, it doesn't mean you won't be affected. Hurricanes aren't points, they are areas.. Looking at the "forecast position" charts doesn't really do a goo job of relating that.

I just talked to my sister, and she said she is gonna saty in Houston.
Which, I don't think is a bad idea. She's far from the coast, she is on high ground, and her dorm is brick built. Plus, Rice already has a shelter set up for all the students.
So, that's a relief. :)
